Those specifics come from an April 2024 report by Insider Gaming and should be treated as early, source-attributed information—not a current feature list.
What Ubisoft has officially said about HEXE
Ubisoft announced Codename HEXE in 2022 as a project from Ubisoft Montreal intended to take a different gameplay direction within the Assassin’s Creed franchise. At the time, Ubisoft framed it as a single-player game with no multiplayer component. Marc-Alexis Côté, then Vice President and Executive Producer of the Assassin’s Creed brand, said the goal was “to innovate in terms of gameplay” and create “different creative tracks within the franchise.” Ubisoft’s 2022 announcement
In its March 4, 2026 update, Ubisoft offered a broad description: “Expect a unique, darker, narrative-driven Assassin’s Creed experience, set during a pivotal moment in history.” Jean Guesdon, identified in the update as Ubisoft Head of Content and HEXE creative director, said more information would come later. The update did not name the historical setting or explain the game’s systems. Ubisoft’s March 2026 update
What Insider Gaming reported in April 2024
Tom Henderson’s April 23, 2024 Insider Gaming report said HEXE was then at a relatively early stage of development and attributed its details to sources. The article described footage showing a gloomy, cobbled city and a sequence featuring a protagonist provisionally called Elsa. In that reported sequence, she possesses a cat, which knocks over a glass bottle to distract soldiers.

Is HEXE set during the witch trials?
That setting has not been confirmed by Ubisoft. The April 2024 report relayed a rumor that the game would take place in Central Europe during the 16th-century Holy Roman Empire, citing Bloomberg for that setting. Ubisoft’s March 2026 update says only that the story is set during “a pivotal moment in history.” It does not identify the region, period or events, so the reported setting remains unconfirmed.

Who is Elsa?
Elsa is the provisional name given to the female protagonist in Insider Gaming’s 2024 report. Ubisoft has not publicly confirmed that name or provided an official character description in the March 2026 update. The early report’s mention of one female protagonist should therefore be understood as a reported detail, not a confirmed character reveal.
