It began as downloadable content for Black Flag and is also sold as a standalone game. That makes the key review questions its expansion-sized scope, whether you already own it through a Black Flag edition or Season Pass, and how seriously its story treats slavery and colonial violence.
What is Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry?
Freedom Cry follows Adewale, who was enslaved as a child, escaped, sailed with Edward Kenway aboard the Jackdaw, and later joined the Assassin Brotherhood. The standalone story takes place 15 years after Black Flag. According to the PlayStation Store synopsis, a shipwreck leaves Adewale without weapons or a crew in Haiti; he becomes involved with the Maroon community and helps free enslaved people. Ubisoft’s launch announcement describes the setting as 18th-century Haiti and frames the story as a fight for liberation.
Slavery, resistance, and colonial violence are central to the premise, not background details. The PlayStation Store lists blood, strong language, suggestive themes, and violence among the content descriptors. The story is fictionalized; the available product information does not establish how accurately it represents the history of slavery in Haiti.
Is Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry standalone?
Yes. Freedom Cry first appeared as an add-on for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, then became available as a separate digital game. The PlayStation Store currently lists a PS4 edition that does not require a Black Flag purchase. Steam says the missions are also included with Black Flag Gold Edition or its Season Pass, so check what you already own before paying for the standalone version.

The PlayStation Blog announced the PS3 and PS4 standalone release on February 18, 2014, at a historical US launch price of $14.99. That is not a current price. GameSpot reported standalone release dates of February 18, 2014, in North America, February 19 in Europe, and February 25 for PC worldwide; these were different regional and platform launch dates, not one global release date.
How long is Freedom Cry?
Steam advertises “Over 3 hours of new single-player gameplay.” That is a storefront claim about the new content, not an independently measured completion time or a guarantee of how long any particular player will take. It does make the scale clear: this is an expansion-sized campaign, not a full-length numbered Assassin’s Creed entry.

What do the reviews say?
GameSpot’s 2014 review, by Miguel Concepcion, described Freedom Cry as “more than just another Assassin’s Creed IV chapter with a reskinned protagonist,” while criticizing its handling of dark themes as “a turbulent voyage.” That is one contemporaneous review’s assessment, not a universal consensus or a current critic aggregate.

The available product information establishes the premise, standalone format, and advertised content length, but it does not establish how well the gameplay works in practice or how effectively the narrative handles its subject matter. Those are the central questions to weigh in individual reviews rather than assume from the store descriptions.

Freedom Cry is a sensible pick for players who want a compact return to Black Flag’s world, are interested in Adewale’s story, and understand that the campaign is much smaller than a main series entry. Its subject gives the expansion a distinct focus, but also makes the care and effectiveness of its portrayal an important part of any review.
