GameSpot’s listing displays a score of 7 and a Metacritic score of 81; review excerpts surfaced on Metacritic praise the game’s Ancient Egypt setting and storytelling while raising questions about its RPG-style loot progression and the time its expansive world can demand. Those figures and excerpts offer a useful snapshot, not a complete or universal verdict.
What the displayed scores say—and what they don’t
GameSpot’s game page displays “GameSpot 7” and a Metacritic score of 81. These are the figures shown on that page, accessed in 2026; they have not been independently recalculated here. The listing does not establish a platform-specific breakdown for the Metacritic figure, so treat it as the score displayed on GameSpot’s page rather than a score for every version or a live measure of all critical opinion.
Scores alone do not explain the main point of disagreement visible in the review excerpts: whether the setting and story make the journey compelling enough for a player who may not enjoy loot-driven RPG progression or a very large open world.
Why the game appeals to some reviewers
The excerpts surfaced on Metacritic describe the appeal of Origins in terms of its Ancient Egypt setting and storytelling. That is the clearest positive thread in this limited sample: the historical atmosphere and narrative can make the world engrossing for players drawn to that place and period.

Where the reservations come from
RPG progression and loot
Some of the review language surfaced by Metacritic questions whether the shift toward RPG-style, loot-oriented gameplay will suit every player. If you prefer a more direct action-adventure structure and do not enjoy collecting gear or progressing through RPG mechanics, that is a meaningful reason to read beyond the score before choosing the game.

The scale and time commitment
One excerpt characterizes a thorough experience as potentially demanding 60-plus hours. That is a reviewer’s description of the game’s scale, not an independently established completion-time estimate; actual playtime depends on how much of the open world and its activities you pursue. The practical question is whether you want a long, expansive game, rather than whether you can meet a fixed hour count.
Is Assassin’s Creed Origins worth playing?
The available review evidence points toward a good fit if Ancient Egypt and story-led exploration are your main attractions and you are comfortable with RPG-style progression and a substantial open-world commitment. It is a less certain fit if loot-oriented mechanics or spending a long time in a large game are drawbacks for you. The excerpt sample is illustrative, not exhaustive, so it cannot establish how common either view is among critics.

Platforms and editions to check
GameSpot lists PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One. The official US PlayStation listing is specifically for PS4 and says the game is playable on PS5, while warning that some PS4 features may be absent. Ubisoft’s US store lists PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Ubisoft and PlayStation also list a Deluxe Edition, but current availability, prices, and exact platform-specific contents are not established here.
Before buying, match the listing to your platform and territory, then confirm the edition contents and availability on the store page. The GameSpot platform list and the official store listings do not describe identical platform coverage, so do not assume every edition is offered everywhere.
