Critics generally praise Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake for its unsettling atmosphere, presentation and story, but reviews also flag uneven combat and usability problems. The reactions depend in part on platform: TechRadar’s review covers the PC version, while Creative Bloq’s covers Switch 2, so they are not a controlled comparison.
What do critics think of Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake?
The reviews point to a survival-horror remake with strong production values and a memorable narrative, but with changes and control choices that do not work equally well for every player. TechRadar’s PC review calls it a strong survival-horror title while arguing that some alterations hold it back. Creative Bloq’s Switch 2 review is more focused on visual compromises, awkward controls and navigation.
That is a qualitative summary of the reviews covered here, not a complete platform-by-platform consensus. Metacritic’s review page includes both praise for the restoration and criticism of combat balance and tedium, but the available page information does not establish a durable platform-specific aggregate score and review count. No single score is needed to explain the split in reactions.
What does the remake change, and what is the story?
Koei Tecmo describes the game as a full remake of the second entry in the Fatal Frame series. Twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura wander into an abandoned village infested by wraiths. They fight the spirits using the Camera Obscura, a camera that is central to the series’ horror and combat. The game launched on March 12, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC via Steam, according to Koei Tecmo’s official game page and its launch announcement.
Why did TechRadar recommend the PC version—with reservations?
TechRadar reviewer Dashiell Wood published the PC review on March 16, 2026. The review reports nearly twenty hours of play on PC using a DualSense controller; these are the reviewer’s observations, not an independent performance test.
Atmosphere, presentation and story
The review highlights detailed environments, character models and the strength of the narrative. It also credits the remake with clearer signposting in places, while objecting that some guidance becomes overbearing. That combination matters in a horror game: clearer direction can reduce aimless wandering, but too much prompting can weaken the unease of finding a way forward.
Combat and difficulty
TechRadar treats the added dodge mechanic as a welcome modernization, but views other combat changes less favorably. The review describes the difficulty as inconsistent, so players should not expect the horror challenge to rise in a smooth, predictable curve.
Keyboard and controller usability
For PC players, the review’s practical warning is control-related: it describes poor keyboard support, awkward bindings and button prompts that do not match the connected controller. Wood recommends playing with a controller. That recommendation is specific to the reviewer’s PC experience, rather than a claim that every setup has the same issue.

What did Creative Bloq find on Switch 2?
Creative Bloq’s review of the Switch 2 version notes visual compromises and clunky controls and animations. It also criticizes vague objectives, unclear map navigation and the extra backtracking those issues can cause. The review identifies handheld motion controls as a distinctive feature, though that will appeal more to some players than others.
The review page states that the Switch 2 version runs at a locked 30 FPS, matching other consoles, including PS5 Pro. Treat that as the review’s technical claim, not a current guarantee: patches released after the review may affect performance. Its visual and control observations should not be assumed to describe the PC or other console editions identically.

Is Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake worth playing?
It looks most appealing to players who value atmospheric environments and a strong horror story, and who are comfortable with combat and navigation that critics found uneven. The PC review’s praise for presentation and the narrative is balanced by concerns about combat changes, difficulty and keyboard support; the Switch 2 review raises separate concerns about controls, objectives and visuals.
For a PC playthrough, a controller is the safer choice based on TechRadar’s report. On Switch 2, consider whether handheld motion controls are a draw and whether clunky navigation would frustrate you. Neither review establishes a definitive winner across platforms, and their observations do not substitute for a direct, same-conditions comparison.
