If Origins still freezes, crashes, or shows a black screen on Windows 11 24H2, first make sure the game has received update 1.62 or a later update. Do not begin with an old registry tweak, compatibility-mode workaround, executable replacement, or Windows rollback guide written before January 2025.
What the Windows 11 24H2 issue looked like
Windows 11 version 24H2 introduced an incompatibility with several Ubisoft PC games, including Assassin’s Creed Origins. Microsoft treated it as a compatibility problem between the operating system and affected applications—not as evidence that Windows 11 24H2 universally broke PC gaming.
#1 Best Overall
- CONSISTENT QUALITY: Our thermal paste packaging design has evolved over time, but the formula has remained the same, ensuring reliable performance.
- EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE: ARCTIC MX-4 thermal paste is made of carbon microparticles, guaranteeing extremely high thermal conductivity. This ensures that heat from the CPU/GPU is dissipated quickly & efficiently
- SAFE APPLICATION: The MX-4 is metal-free and non-electrical conductive which eliminates any risks of causing short circuit, adding more protection to the CPU and VGA cards
- HIGH DURABILITY: In contrast to metal and silicon thermal compound, the MX-4 does not compromise over time. Once applied, you do not need to apply it again as it will last at least for 8 years
- EASY TO APPLY: With an ideal consistency, the MX-4 is very easy to use, even for beginners
Reported symptoms included:
- The game failing to launch or crashing during startup
- A black screen after launching
- The game becoming unresponsive or freezing
- Crashes several minutes after loading into the game
- Repeated failure after installing Windows 11 24H2 on an otherwise working system
Those symptoms were consistent with the documented compatibility problem, but they do not prove that every crash on 24H2 has the same cause. A post-update crash can also result from damaged game files, an outdated graphics driver, overlays, overclocking, Ubisoft Connect problems, antivirus interference, or unstable hardware.
Current fix: install Title Update 1.62
The official game-side fix is Assassin’s Creed Origins Title Update 1.62. Ubisoft announced the update on January 14, 2025, describing the approximately 230 MB patch as a fix for compatibility issues with the Windows 11 24H2 update.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Downloads from the Steam client menu, or open the game’s Library page and check for a pending update.
- Allow Assassin’s Creed Origins to finish downloading and installing.
- Restart Steam if the update does not appear.
- Launch the game only after the download and installation have completed.
Do not rely solely on an old forum post or the date shown in a search result. Confirm that Steam has completed the game update. The important requirement is version 1.62 or later, not necessarily a particular display format for the version number.
Other PC storefronts
If you own the game through another PC storefront, allow both the storefront and Ubisoft Connect to complete their update processes. The official announcement identifying Title Update 1.62 was published through Steam, so the exact download and version-display behavior should not be assumed to be identical for every entitlement.
In practice, check that:
- The storefront reports that the game is fully updated.
- Ubisoft Connect has finished any queued update or file-synchronization work.
- You are launching the same installation that was updated.
- No download is paused, queued, or blocked by the launcher.
Why Windows Update may have blocked 24H2
Microsoft applied a safeguard hold to systems that appeared to have affected Ubisoft games installed. A safeguard hold prevents Windows Update from offering a feature update when Microsoft and the software publisher identify a known compatibility risk.

- High Performance: Utilizes nanoparticles for superior heat conductivity for your CPU or GPU.
- Exceptional Thermal Conductivity: K value of 14W/mK handles even the most extreme system builds.
- Anhygroscopic (non moisture absorbent): Electrically insulated and non-moisture absorbent properties to protect your CPU.
- Easy Application: Viscously balanced formula allow for easy application and clean up.
- Non Corrosive Formula: Non corrosive and oxidation resistant properties leave metal surfaces unharmed and does not solidify.
Microsoft also warned users not to bypass the hold with the Windows Installation Assistant or Media Creation Tool while the issue was unresolved. That advice was appropriate during the original incident, because forcing the update could install Windows 11 24H2 before the game fix was available.

What to do if Origins still crashes
Work through these steps in order. The goal is to establish that the documented compatibility fix is installed before investigating unrelated local problems.
1. Confirm the Windows build
Press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter. Confirm whether the system is running Windows 11 version 24H2. This does not by itself identify the cause of a crash, but it helps distinguish old 24H2 reports from a current troubleshooting case.
2. Update the game and restart the PC
Install Title Update 1.62 or later, close the launcher, and restart Windows. Retest before changing compatibility settings. A reboot can also complete pending launcher, graphics-driver, or Windows components that were waiting for a restart.

3. Repair or verify the game files
Use the file-verification or repair option in the launcher where you own the game. This is useful if the update was interrupted or files became corrupted. It is a sensible post-patch repair step, but it was not the documented remedy for the original Microsoft compatibility incident.
4. Update the graphics and chipset drivers
Install current drivers from your GPU and system manufacturer, or use Windows Update where appropriate. Driver updates are general troubleshooting, not proof that a graphics driver caused the original 24H2 failure.
If you use a laptop, check the laptop manufacturer as well as NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Laptop vendors sometimes provide customized graphics, chipset, or power-management packages that are not interchangeable with desktop drivers.
5. Temporarily disable overlays
Test with overlays disabled, especially Steam Overlay, Ubisoft Connect overlay, Discord overlay, and GPU recording or monitoring overlays. If the game becomes stable, re-enable them one at a time to identify the conflict.

7. Check Ubisoft Connect and security software
Make sure Ubisoft Connect is signed in, updated, and able to access the game installation. Temporarily test whether antivirus or controlled-folder protection is blocking the launcher or game executable, using your security software’s documented exception process rather than downloading unofficial replacement files.
8. Review crash information only after patching
Event Viewer and game crash logs can help distinguish a driver failure from an application or launcher failure. Check them after confirming the game is patched. A crash log is evidence about one installation; it is not, by itself, proof that the original 24H2 compatibility bug has returned.
Use the symptom to choose the next step
| Symptom | Best next action |
|---|---|
| Won’t launch, black screen, or freezes within minutes | Confirm Windows build, install update 1.62 or later, restart, and retest before using compatibility settings. |
| Steam shows an update pending | Complete the download, restart Steam if necessary, and verify that the installed game is no longer waiting for an update. |
| Only Origins crashes after it is patched | Verify files, test with overlays disabled, remove overclocks, and install current GPU drivers. |
| Several unrelated games also crash | Investigate Windows components, drivers, memory stability, overlays, antivirus, and hardware instead of blaming Origins alone. |
| You cannot roll back Windows | Do not make rollback the primary recommendation. The original Origins issue was addressed by the game update; troubleshoot the patched installation first. |
Origins, Valhalla, and Odyssey were not identical cases
Microsoft’s resolved-issues documentation distinguishes Assassin’s Creed Odyssey from Origins and Valhalla. Odyssey was included in the initial safeguard as a precaution, but Microsoft later determined that it was not affected by the same compatibility problem and did not require an equivalent fix.
That distinction matters because older posts sometimes group all three Assassin’s Creed games together. A report about Odyssey does not establish that Origins has the same failure, and a continuing crash in Origins after Title Update 1.62 needs to be investigated on its own merits.
Workarounds you should avoid
- Registry edits designed to bypass Windows Update safeguards: these do not replace the game fix and can expose a system to a known compatibility problem.
- Compatibility mode as the first fix: it was not identified by Ubisoft as the official solution and can introduce new behavior.
- Unofficial executable replacements or “crackfix” downloads: they create security and integrity risks and are unnecessary for the documented issue.
- Assuming every later crash is the 24H2 bug: once the game is patched, local software, driver, launcher, and hardware causes become more plausible.
- Rolling back Windows immediately: rollback advice from late 2024 predates the January 2025 game fix and should not be the default current recommendation.
Bottom line
Windows 11 24H2 did cause a genuine compatibility failure in Assassin’s Creed Origins. The issue led Microsoft to place a safeguard hold on affected systems and caused reports of startup crashes, black screens, freezes, and crashes during play.

That specific issue was resolved by Ubisoft’s Title Update 1.62 on January 14, 2025. Microsoft lifted safeguard hold 54437462 two days later. Update the game first, then verify files, drivers, overlays, launcher behavior, and system stability if problems continue. A patched game that still crashes is not automatically evidence that the original Windows 11 24H2 incompatibility is still active.
Frequently Asked Questions
