The practical way to reset an Xbox controller is to turn it off, remove and reconnect its power, then pair it again. Xbox One uses the console and controller bind buttons; Xbox Series X|S uses the newer pairing process; Windows requires removing and re-adding the Bluetooth device. There is no Microsoft-documented universal button sequence that factory-resets every Xbox controller.

What “resetting” an Xbox controller actually does

There is no Microsoft-documented universal button combination that factory-resets every Xbox Wireless Controller. For Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows, the practical reset is a power cycle followed by a fresh wireless pairing:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Hold the Xbox button until the controller turns off.
  2. Remove the AA batteries or rechargeable battery pack for a short time. If the controller has a built-in rechargeable battery, disconnect its charging cable and let it power down.
  3. Reconnect the power source and turn the controller on.
  4. Pair it again with the console or PC.
  5. If wireless pairing fails, test it with a known-good, data-capable USB cable.

This process does not normally erase console games, profiles, saved data, button mappings, or controller firmware. It also is not proof that a physical fault—such as stick drift, worn buttons, damaged battery contacts, or a broken USB port—has been repaired.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
  1. Turn off the controller by holding the Xbox button for several seconds.
  2. Remove its AA batteries or rechargeable battery pack.
  3. Wait briefly, then reinstall the batteries or reconnect the pack.
  4. Turn the controller on.
  5. Pair it with the device again using the console’s or controller’s pairing button.
  6. If it still will not connect wirelessly, connect it with a compatible data cable.

A controller that works through USB but not wirelessly does not necessarily need a factory reset. That result points toward a pairing record, Bluetooth setting, Xbox Wireless connection, interference, driver, or firmware problem.

Reset and reconnect an Xbox One controller

Wireless pairing with an Xbox One console

  1. Turn on the Xbox One console.
  2. Install fresh AA batteries or a charged Xbox One Play & Charge battery.
  3. Hold the Xbox button on the controller until it turns on.
  4. Press and release the console’s bind button. On the Xbox One S and Xbox One X, it is on the front-right area below the power button. On the original Xbox One, it is on the side near the disc tray.
  5. Within about 20 seconds, press and hold the circular bind button on the top edge of the controller.
  6. Keep holding it until the Xbox button flashes. Release it when the button stops flashing and remains steadily illuminated.

The steady Xbox button indicates that the controller has paired. An Xbox One console supports up to eight wireless controllers according to Microsoft’s Xbox One support workflow; if you are already using that many, disconnect one before adding another.

If the controller repeatedly shuts down or will not light up, begin with fresh AA batteries or a compatible rechargeable pack rather than assuming the controller needs a reset. Batteries cannot fix confirmed hardware damage, but they eliminate the most common power-related cause.

Wired fallback for Xbox One

Connect the controller directly to the console with a USB-to-micro-USB cable. The Xbox One controller uses micro-USB, not USB-C. A charge-only cable may power the controller without carrying data, so use a known-good USB-to-micro-USB data cable when you are testing the controller or trying to establish a wired connection.

If it works over micro-USB but not wirelessly, the controller is receiving power and communicating over USB. Focus on wireless pairing, interference, the console’s bind process, or controller firmware rather than repeating the power reset.

Reset and reconnect an Xbox Series X|S controller

The current Xbox Wireless Controller works with Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, and supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs. It uses Xbox Wireless with Xbox consoles and can use Bluetooth with supported PCs and mobile devices.

  1. Hold the Xbox button until the controller turns off.
  2. Remove and reinstall the AA batteries or rechargeable battery pack.
  3. Turn on the Xbox Series X|S console and the controller.
  4. Press the pairing button on the console.
  5. Press and hold the pairing button on the top of the controller until the Xbox button flashes.
  6. Wait for the Xbox button to remain steadily illuminated.

If pairing does not complete, connect the controller to the console with a compatible USB-C data cable. Current controller revisions use USB-C, although cable and feature compatibility can vary between controller revisions. A cable that carries charging power but not data is not a reliable diagnostic tool.

Reset an Xbox controller on Windows 11

On Windows, resetting the controller usually means removing its Bluetooth device record and pairing it again. First confirm that the PC has Bluetooth, Bluetooth is enabled, the controller has power, and the controller is close enough to the computer.

Remove and pair the controller again

  1. Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
  2. Find the Xbox controller in the device list.
  3. Open its additional-options menu and select Remove device.
  4. Turn the controller off and on again.
  5. Hold the controller’s pairing button until the Xbox button flashes.
  6. Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices, choose to add a Bluetooth device, and select the controller when it appears.

If the controller does not appear, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices and set Bluetooth device discovery to Advanced. This allows Windows to display all types of Bluetooth devices rather than a narrower set.

If Windows cannot find the controller

  • Turn Airplane mode off.
  • Toggle Bluetooth off, wait briefly, and turn it back on.
  • Move the controller closer to the PC and reduce nearby wireless or USB interference. Microsoft specifically identifies nearby USB 3.0 devices as a possible source of Bluetooth interference.
  • Run Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Bluetooth > Run.
  • Open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, right-click the Bluetooth adapter, and choose the driver-update option.
  • Prefer Windows Update or the computer manufacturer’s driver when available. Restart the PC if Windows requests it.

Outdated or incompatible Bluetooth adapter drivers are a common reason an Xbox controller will not pair or repeatedly disconnect. Microsoft’s free Windows and manufacturer-driver steps should come first. If those steps do not resolve a persistent driver problem, a third-party Windows Bluetooth driver help tool such as Outbyte Driver Updater is an optional troubleshooting aid—not a requirement, Microsoft product, or Microsoft endorsement. Review what it proposes before installing or changing drivers.

Reset an Xbox controller on Windows 10

The same basic procedure applies to Windows 10:

  1. Open Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.
  2. Select the Xbox controller and choose Remove device.
  3. Power-cycle the controller.
  4. Turn Bluetooth off and on again if necessary.
  5. Put the controller into pairing mode and add it again from Windows Bluetooth settings.
  6. Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter and update the PC manufacturer’s Bluetooth driver if pairing still fails.

Date note: Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 PC may continue to run, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical support, or security fixes for that operating system after that date. This can affect the long-term reliability and security of Bluetooth troubleshooting on an older PC.

When a cable is the best reset test

A wired connection separates wireless problems from controller power or hardware problems:

  • Xbox One: use a USB-to-micro-USB data cable.
  • Xbox Series X|S and supported newer controllers: use a compatible USB-C data cable.
  • Windows: a wired connection can allow the controller to be detected even when Bluetooth pairing is failing and may help with Xbox Accessories configuration on supported controllers.

If the controller works by cable, verify that it has sufficient battery power, then troubleshoot the wireless connection. If it does not work by cable or wireless connection on more than one compatible device, hardware failure becomes more likely. For Series and Windows users who need a wired diagnostic or Xbox Accessories connection, a USB-C data cable for Xbox controller is more useful than a charge-only lead.

Update controller firmware with Xbox Accessories

A controller that disconnects across multiple devices, fails to pair repeatedly, or behaves incorrectly may need a firmware update rather than another power cycle. Xbox provides controller firmware updates through the Xbox Accessories app on an Xbox console or Windows PC.

  1. Connect the controller to the console or Windows PC with a compatible data cable if the app does not detect it wirelessly.
  2. Open Xbox Accessories.
  3. Select the controller.
  4. Install the firmware update if the app offers one.
  5. After updating, power-cycle the controller and pair it again.

Button mapping for supported Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11 setups is also available through Xbox Accessories. Firmware maintenance can address software and compatibility problems, but it is not a guaranteed cure for stick drift, worn analog-stick components, unresponsive buttons, a damaged battery compartment, or a defective port.

What kind of “reset” do you need?

Problem Appropriate action What it changes
Controller is frozen or will not respond Power reset: turn it off and remove/reconnect its power source Restarts the controller’s power state
Controller was used with another console or PC Pair it again with the bind button or Bluetooth settings Creates a new wireless connection
Windows shows a stale or failed Bluetooth entry Remove the device in Bluetooth settings and add it again Deletes that Windows pairing record
Controller disconnects or behaves incorrectly on several devices Check for an Xbox Accessories firmware update Updates controller software
Stick drift, failed buttons, damaged port, or battery contacts Test on another device and seek repair or replacement A reset cannot be assumed to repair physical wear

Do not describe the generic power-and-pair procedure as a factory reset. Unless Microsoft documents a factory-reset procedure for the exact controller model, there is no basis for claiming that a button sequence erases firmware, profiles, console data, or every saved setting.

Xbox controller troubleshooting decision tree

The Xbox button does not light up

  1. Replace the AA batteries or recharge the battery pack.
  2. Inspect the battery contacts and ensure the pack is seated correctly.
  3. Try a known-good USB cable.
  4. Test the controller on another compatible console or PC.

If the controller shows no sign of power on another device, suspect a battery compartment, port, internal power, or other hardware failure.

The controller powers on but will not connect to Xbox

Repeat the correct console/controller bind sequence for Xbox One or Series X|S. Restart the console, then try a wired connection. If it works by cable, update firmware and retry wireless pairing. Make sure you are using the correct console bind button and that the controller is not already connected to another nearby device.

The controller connects by cable but not Bluetooth on Windows

Remove the controller from Bluetooth settings, toggle Bluetooth, put the controller back into pairing mode, and add it again. Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter, update the PC’s Bluetooth adapter driver, check range and interference, and restart Windows if requested.

The controller disconnects repeatedly

  • Check battery charge and try another battery pack if available.
  • Reduce the distance between the controller and console or PC.
  • Remove and re-add the controller in Windows Bluetooth settings.
  • Update the controller through Xbox Accessories.
  • Update the Windows Bluetooth driver where applicable.
  • Move nearby USB 3.0 devices or wireless equipment that may interfere with Bluetooth.

Stick drift or buttons do not respond

Power-cycle and re-pair the controller once, then test it on another compatible device. Install a firmware update if Xbox Accessories offers one. If the same stick or button fault remains, the cause is likely physical wear or damage; resetting cannot be expected to restore a worn analog stick or failed switch.

When replacement is reasonable

Replacement should be the last step after checking power, pairing, cable type, Bluetooth settings, drivers, and firmware. If the controller still fails on multiple compatible devices, will not power on with known-good batteries or cable power, or has persistent physical faults, compare repair costs with a replacement Xbox Wireless Controller. Choose a model whose connector and wireless features match your console or Windows setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a factory-reset button on an Xbox controller?

No. Microsoft does not document one universal button sequence that factory-resets every Xbox Wireless Controller. The practical reset is to power-cycle the controller and pair it again.

How do I reset an Xbox controller’s Bluetooth connection on Windows?

Remove the controller from Windows Bluetooth settings, power-cycle it, put it into pairing mode, and add it again. In Windows 11, use Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices; in Windows 10, use Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices.

Which cable do I need to connect an Xbox controller by wire?

Use a USB-to-micro-USB data cable for Xbox One controllers. Current Xbox Wireless Controllers generally use a compatible USB-C data cable. A charge-only cable may not provide a useful wired test.

Will resetting an Xbox controller fix stick drift?

A reset may fix an intermittent software or connection problem, but it cannot be assumed to repair worn analog sticks or damaged buttons. Test the controller on another device and consider service or replacement if the fault remains.

The Bottom Line

The reliable Xbox-controller “reset” is a power cycle followed by fresh pairing—not a universal factory-reset command. Use the console bind process for Xbox One or Series X|S, remove and re-add the Bluetooth device on Windows, and use a correctly wired data cable to distinguish wireless problems from hardware faults. Update firmware through Xbox Accessories when appropriate, but treat persistent drift, failed buttons, or no-power symptoms as possible hardware failures.
