Assassin’s Creed Rogue and Assassin’s Creed Rogue Remastered have mixed-to-average aggregate review labels, with Metacritic snapshots showing 72/100 for the 2014 original and 71/100 for the 2018 remaster. Those figures summarize different groups of reviews; they do not establish that one edition is better. The game’s distinctive premise is that Shay Patrick Cormac leaves the Assassin Brotherhood and hunts Assassins during the French and Indian War. Whether it is worth playing depends in part on whether that Templar-side perspective interests you.
Is Assassin’s Creed Rogue worth playing?
The available aggregate scores place both editions in Metacritic’s “Mixed or Average” category. That is useful as a broad reception snapshot, not as a substitute for the reasoning in individual reviews. The premise offers a different viewpoint on the series: Ubisoft Sofia’s original follows Shay Patrick Cormac’s transformation from an Assassin Brotherhood member into an Assassin hunter during the French and Indian War. Ubisoft described the Templar-side story as turning series conventions around, but that is publisher framing rather than independent critical judgment.

Metacritic’s records do not explain why reviewers reached their scores. They therefore cannot, on their own, support a detailed verdict about story quality, combat, naval missions, repetition, or technical performance.
How do the original and Remastered reviews compare?
Metacritic’s captured records, accessed October 8, 2026, list the following figures. Scores and review or rating counts can change, so treat them as snapshots rather than permanent totals.

What changed in Rogue Remastered?
Ubisoft announced the Remastered edition for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in March 2018. Its listed changes include 4K support, higher-resolution textures and shadows, improved environmental rendering, and new visual effects. These are the specific visual upgrades Ubisoft documented; the announcement does not establish that every platform renders the game at the same resolution.

For PlayStation, Ubisoft’s product information is more specific: PlayStation 4 Pro supports native 4K, while PlayStation 4 supports 1080p. These resolution details apply to those named consoles. The cited material does not establish current compatibility or resolution behavior on later hardware.
Ubisoft Sofia worked on the Remastered version, and Ubisoft said developers who had worked on the 2014 original also worked on the remaster. The publisher presented the edition as a chance to experience the series from the Templar side; that statement explains the intended perspective, not its critical reception.

Which edition should you choose?
- Choose the original if you specifically want the 2014 release. Metacritic identifies Ubisoft Sofia as its developer and dates its initial release to November 11, 2014.
- Choose Remastered if you want the 2018 edition’s documented visual upgrades on PS4 or Xbox One. On PlayStation, note the distinction between native 4K on PS4 Pro and 1080p on PS4.
- Choose based on the premise if your main question is whether the story interests you: the central setup is Shay’s move from the Assassins to hunting them. A premise is not a guarantee of quality, and the aggregate figures do not settle the question for every player.

Metacritic’s scores are aggregates, not survey findings about all players and not explanations of a game’s strengths or weaknesses. The captured records establish release context, review and rating totals, and broad reception labels. They do not provide enough individual review text to substantiate recurring praise or criticism about particular mechanics or performance. For those questions, consult full reviews of the specific edition and platform you plan to play.
