Ubisoft says those versions target 60 FPS at 2160p upscaled. That describes the output resolution, not native 4K rendering. Xbox Series S has a different target: 30 FPS.
Which consoles target 60 FPS?
Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows Tech Q&A says PS5 and Xbox Series X players can choose Performance mode for a 60 FPS target at 2160p upscaled. Ubisoft’s console specifications explain that Performance mode lowers rendering resolution and adjusts graphics settings to pursue that target.
“2160p upscaled” means the image is reconstructed for a 2160p (4K) output. It does not establish that the game renders every frame at native 4K. Ubisoft’s published specifications do not provide fixed internal-resolution ranges for each mode or scene.
Xbox Series S is not included in the 60 FPS claim
Ubisoft says the Xbox Series S version targets 30 FPS. The PS5 and Xbox Series X 60 FPS statement should not be generalized to every console.

How the console modes compare
Ubisoft lists Quality mode at a 30 FPS target and Balanced mode at 40 FPS. Balanced mode requires a compatible high-refresh-rate display and uses a configuration closer to Quality, with slightly reduced rendering resolution. The detailed PS5 and PS5 Pro mode descriptions below come from PlayStation’s March 6, 2025 mode specifications; they are launch-era descriptions, not fixed internal-resolution measurements.
| Console and mode | Published target and output | Ray tracing and display notes |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Performance | 60 FPS; 2160p upscaled | Selective ray tracing: diffuse global illumination in the Hideout. |
| PS5 Fidelity | 30 FPS; 2160p upscaled | Standard ray tracing: diffuse global illumination throughout the game world. |
| PS5 Balanced | 40 FPS; 2160p upscaled | Standard ray tracing; requires a 120/240 Hz display and HDMI 2.1. |
| PS5 Pro Performance | 60 FPS; 2160p upscaled | Standard ray tracing in the launch-era specification. |
| PS5 Pro Fidelity | 30 FPS; 2160p upscaled | Extended ray tracing, including diffuse global illumination and reflections throughout the game world. |
| PS5 Pro Balanced | 40 FPS; 2160p upscaled | Standard ray tracing; requires a 120/240 Hz display and HDMI 2.1. |
| Xbox Series X Performance | 60 FPS target; 2160p upscaled | Reduced rendering resolution and adjusted graphics settings in Performance mode. |
| Xbox Series X Quality | 30 FPS target | Higher resolution and boosted rendering systems, per Ubisoft. |
| Xbox Series X Balanced | 40 FPS target | High-refresh-rate display required; configuration is closer to Quality mode. |
| Xbox Series S | 30 FPS target | Ubisoft does not assign it the PS5/Series X 2160p-upscaled 60 FPS claim. |
Mode targets describe the intended performance trade-off, not a guarantee that every scene behaves identically. Ubisoft notes that the customizable Hideout uses ray-traced global illumination because its layouts are not predetermined, and that the frame rate adjusts when this system activates.

Why does Performance mode use upscaling?
Ubisoft’s Technology Director, Pierre F., said that reaching 60 FPS while using ray-traced global illumination would consume too much GPU capacity. The game instead uses a hybrid approach: a baked global-illumination pipeline adapted for dynamic seasons and thinner walls, alongside more limited ray tracing. Ubisoft says the lower GPU cost of its baked approach leaves capacity for other rendering features.
This is why “upscaled 4K at 60 FPS” is a useful shorthand for the PS5 and Xbox Series X Performance mode target, but not a claim of native 4K rendering or a promise of identical performance in every situation.

What changed for PS5 Pro in 2026?
Upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) became available for Assassin’s Creed Shadows on PS5 Pro on April 7, 2026, alongside Title Update 1.1.9. PlayStation announced the update on March 31, 2026, saying the improved upscaler applies across Performance, Balanced, and Quality modes. Those modes use dynamic resolution scaling and different internal resolutions; the announcement does not give fixed internal-resolution ranges.
Ubisoft Technical Art Director Robert Foriel said the upgraded PSSR improves pixel sharpness and image stability, reducing motion- and vibration-related visual artifacts. This update changes image reconstruction on PS5 Pro; it does not turn the 2160p-upscaled description into evidence of native 4K rendering.
