Assassin’s Creed Shadows Title Update 1.0.6 launched on June 25, 2025; it is not an upcoming update. Its headline additions were Nightmare difficulty, which changes both stealth and combat, and the free Critical Role quest “A Critical Encounter,” which rewards a recruitable ally named Rufino. Ubisoft later said the game’s final update was available in June 2026.
What Update 1.0.6 added
Ubisoft announced the update in release notes published June 24, 2025, with a scheduled release of June 25 at 14:00 UTC / 10:00 EDT / 7:00 PT. The notes described its new difficulty as a tougher, more intense experience. Ubisoft’s Title Update 1.0.6 release notes said: “Prepare for tougher enemies and a more intense overall experience.”
The notes listed download sizes of 6.27 GB for PS5, 19 GB for Xbox Series, 9 GB for Mac, 17 GB for PC, and 8.5 GB for Steam. Those are the figures in the June 2025 announcement, not a guarantee of current download or install sizes.
What Nightmare difficulty changes
Nightmare raises the challenge across stealth and combat by making defenses less effective, enemies more dangerous and resources harder to come by. It is a difficulty setting for players prepared to adapt to tougher detection and tighter timing as well as harder fights.

- Parries and defense: A parry must be timed perfectly to deflect a hit. An imperfect parry only partially blocks damage, and enemies deal more damage overall.
- Enemy behavior: Enemies are smarter, faster and more aggressive, including when they detect the player. Dodges and parries no longer make enemies vulnerable; abilities are needed to create that opening.
- Stealth: Naoe can make noise while crouching and can be spotted while moving in shadows.
- Resources: Adrenaline, rations and shinobi items are harder to obtain. The notes’ addendum specifies that kunai used on Nightmare cannot be recovered from enemies.
Choose Nightmare if you want a greater challenge in both stealth and combat and are comfortable managing scarcer supplies and more demanding parry timing. The update notes describe those changes but do not recommend a particular difficulty for any type of player.
How to unlock Rufino in “A Critical Encounter”
The free quest “A Critical Encounter” came from Ubisoft’s collaboration with Critical Role. Rufino, an old friend of Tomiko and Heiji, asks Naoe and Yasuke for help after uncovering a conspiracy. Completing the quest adds Rufino as a recruitable ally; he is based on the character played by Robbie Daymond in the Critical Role Assassin’s Creed Shadows one-shot.

- Complete the “Way of the Blacksmith” quest.
- Unlock Yasuke as a playable character.
- Go to the Hideout to start “A Critical Encounter.”
- Complete the quest to earn Rufino as a recruitable ally and a trophy or achievement.
The update also introduced a separate Critical Role-themed weapon pack for purchase in the in-game store: a tanto and katana for Naoe, plus a kanabo and teppo for Yasuke. It is an in-game purchase, distinct from the free quest.
Other quality-of-life and PC changes
- A setting lets players show headgear in dialogue cutscenes, with exceptions for cinematics and some romance-specific scenes.
- Players can toggle selected visual effects.
- Repeatedly attacking civilians or military units outside castles can trigger province-wide alarms.
- Three horse-camera presets were added.
- PC received an Ultra Low graphics mode.
- Ubisoft also fixed issues across quests, gameplay, visuals and audio, and its addendum says multi-select returned for shops and vendors.
Is Update 1.0.6 still the latest update?
No. Update 1.0.6 was an earlier patch from June 2025. In an article published June 16, 2026, Ubisoft said Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ final update was available. That article lists the game on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Apple-silicon Mac. See Ubisoft’s announcement of the final update for its later status.
