Yes—but the comparison is limited to UK physical sales. According to Video Games Chronicle (VGC), reporting GfK/Nielsen data provided via The Game Business, Assassin’s Creed Shadows sold more boxed copies in its first week than Star Wars Outlaws sold in its first three months. The report gives no unit totals, so it does not establish how large the gap was or which game had higher worldwide sales across all formats.
What the sales comparison actually says
Shadows launched on March 20, 2025. VGC published its comparison on March 25, describing Shadows’ first week against Outlaws’ first three months. The claim is about UK boxed copies—not digital sales, worldwide sales, revenue, or lifetime totals. VGC attributed the figures to GfK/Nielsen data provided through The Game Business; its report did not publish the underlying dataset or exact copy counts.
- Game and period: Shadows’ first week versus Outlaws’ first three months.
- Market and format: UK physical copies.
- What is unknown: The unit totals and the precise numerical margin.
Why this is not a global sales verdict
A sales comparison is only meaningful when its market, format, time period, metric, and platform coverage match. Here, the reported result covers one national physical-sales market and compares different-length windows. It cannot tell readers whether Shadows sold more than Outlaws worldwide, whether it led in digital sales, or which game had greater total sales over its full lifetime.
Those limits matter because physical copies are only one part of a game’s sales. The VGC report does not provide a corresponding digital figure or a full-market total for either title. Without those figures, extending the UK boxed-sales result to all formats or territories would go beyond what the report establishes.

How Shadows compares with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
VGC also reported that Shadows’ UK physical launch sales reached 63% of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s November 2020 launch sales. That is a separate comparison, and it comes with caveats: VGC noted that Valhalla had physical releases on more platforms and that software demand was boosted during the COVID era. The percentage is useful context, but it is not a like-for-like measure of overall commercial performance.
What Ubisoft’s other figures measure
Day-one revenue, not UK physical copies
In its FY2024–25 earnings release, published May 14, 2025, Ubisoft said Shadows had achieved the second-highest Day 1 sales revenue in Assassin’s Creed history, behind Valhalla, and set a new record for Ubisoft’s Day 1 performance on the PlayStation digital store. The company also said consumer spending and player count had outperformed Odyssey at that point. These are Ubisoft’s broader company metrics; they do not supply UK physical unit totals or a direct all-format comparison with Outlaws.

Player counts are not copies sold
Ubisoft announced two million Shadows players, and later reported more than five million unique players in its Q1 FY2025–26 update, published July 22, 2025. Player counts are not sales counts: they need not correspond one-to-one with purchases, and the cited announcements do not provide a platform breakdown. They should not be substituted for the physical-copy figures in VGC’s comparison.
Ubisoft’s assessment of Outlaws
In a September 25, 2024 trading update, Ubisoft described Star Wars Outlaws’ initial sales as “softer than expected.” That is the company’s qualitative assessment, not a published copy count, and it does not reveal the UK physical total used in the later comparison.

The clearest conclusion
The supported takeaway is narrow but notable: VGC reported that Shadows sold more UK physical copies in one week than Outlaws did in three months, based on GfK/Nielsen data provided via The Game Business. The report does not disclose exact totals, and the comparison does not establish a worldwide or all-format sales lead.
