Most dialogue choices in Assassin’s Creed Shadows change a conversation or how a character responds; they do not automatically create a different main-story ending. Pay attention to the game’s “This will impact” warning for consequential decisions, and use heart-marked responses when pursuing a romance. Romance details below contain spoilers.
How to tell which choices matter
Ubisoft’s dialogue icons describe the kind of response an option represents: a heart for flirtation, balancing scales for a lie, crossed red swords for a fight, and a red skull for death. You can set dialogue icons to show all icons, crucial icons only, or none. See Ubisoft’s dialogue-icon tips.

Icons help identify tone or intent, but they are not a complete forecast of the story. A third-party choices index distinguishes options that change dialogue from those with broader story effects. For major decisions, the game may show a “This will impact” prompt naming the affected character or group; the index notes that consequences can include a character’s death. Treat that warning as the clearest in-game signal that a decision has substantial stakes.
What an option can change
- Immediate reaction: A character may respond differently, while the quest continues along the same course.
- Dialogue availability: A choice can affect what characters say or which conversation options appear later.
- Relationship eligibility: Heart-marked choices can signal a romance opportunity.
- Ally availability or survival: Some larger decisions affect who remains available or accompanies you.
- Quest or story development: Choices with an impact warning can have broader consequences, including death.
For a particular line, search the exact dialogue wording shown in the game alongside the character or quest name. An indexed outcome is a guide to a reported route, not a guarantee that every option changes the main story.

How to romance characters
Spoilers: The following names and route guidance identify romance options and selected outcomes. GamesRadar reports four options: Naoe can pursue Gennojo or Katsuhime, while Yasuke can pursue Ibuki or Lady Oichi. Heart-marked responses are the general route signal, and romance is unavailable in Canon Mode. See GamesRadar’s romance-options guide.
Naoe and Gennojo
PC Gamer’s route guide says to choose heart responses during “Missing Missive,” “Lost Honor,” and “Sake and Swords,” then select the final heart-arrow choice when resolving “Stolen Hearts.” Its listed dialogue options include “Let’s not fight,” “You might be right,” and “Depends on what you’re offering.” Check the quest and dialogue wording in your game before relying on an exact sequence: this reported route is not independently verified here against every later update. Details are in PC Gamer’s Gennojo route guide.

Yasuke and Lady Oichi
One indexed Lady Oichi route reports that keeping Fuji-maru is compatible with the romance if you selected the earlier heart responses, followed by “Let’s enjoy the moment” at the conclusion. This is a guide-documented example, not a rule that every seemingly separate decision is harmless to every romance. See the choices index’s Lady Oichi example.
Katsuhime and Ibuki
GamesRadar lists Katsuhime as a romance option for Naoe and Ibuki for Yasuke. The available route information establishes heart responses as the general signal, but does not provide a verified, complete sequence of quest choices for either character. Follow the heart-marked opportunities and check a character-specific guide if you need exact dialogue steps.

Does Canon Mode change the ending?
Canon Mode makes choices for the player and does not allow romance pursuit, according to GameSpot’s reporting on comments from director Jonathan Dumont. Associate Narrative Director Brooke Davies described the story as culminating in one canonical ending, with different paths affecting which allies are at the player’s side. In other words, path variation and ally presence do not establish multiple main-story endings. Read GameSpot’s Canon Mode coverage.
How current are choice guides?
Ubisoft announced a final update adding a new story arc and the Domains feature. That update matters when using older walkthroughs: treat their dialogue sequences as reported route guides rather than proof that every step has been checked against the latest build. The available guides do not establish that every possible choice has been verified after the update. Ubisoft’s announcement is at Ubisoft News.
Ubisoft’s game page lists Assassin’s Creed Shadows for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Amazon Luna, Apple silicon Macs, and Windows PC storefronts. Platform listings and availability can vary by region; use the matching regional store listing for current details. Ubisoft also promotes the Assassin’s Creed Shadows Complete Official Guide by Piggyback for readers who want a printed companion.
