The strongest all-around starting point for a Baldur’s Gate 3 Hexblade is a pure Warlock 12: build around Charisma, fight with a bound weapon, and take Shadow Blade at level 3. It keeps the subclass’s key features on schedule while leaving room for Eldritch Blast, defensive tools, and utility spells. “Best” here means a flexible single-class build, not a proven winner over every multiclass or difficulty setup.
Why choose a pure Hexblade?
Hexblade arrived with Patch 8, released April 15, 2025. Larian describes the subclass as a pact with a sentient weapon from the Shadowfell; in play, it combines weapon combat, curses, and spectres raised from cursed foes. Larian’s Community Update #34 says the pact begins with a bound Hexed Sickle, Hexed Maul, or Hexed Flail that curses targets.
At level 1, Hex Warrior grants medium-armour, shield, and martial-weapon proficiency. Bind Hexed Weapon lets a proficient weapon use Charisma rather than Strength or Dexterity for its attack rolls. That makes one ability score serve both spellcasting and your bound weapon offense. The Hexblade feature list describes the subclass’s mechanics.
A straight Warlock progression is a practical way to get the subclass’s later features without delaying them for another class. Warlock spell slots return on a short rest, and the class gains feats at levels 4, 8, and 12. The route below follows PC Gamer’s Patch 8 build guide; it is a recommendation, not a controlled comparison with every alternative. Warlock progression details and the PC Gamer build guide provide the progression reference.

Starting ability scores
PC Gamer’s suggested starting array is:
| Ability | Score | Build purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | 8 | Not the main attack ability for a bound weapon. |
| Dexterity | 16 | Supports initiative and contributes to Armour Class when applicable. |
| Constitution | 14 | Supports durability and concentration checks. |
| Intelligence | 8 | A low-priority ability for this setup. |
| Wisdom | 10 | A modest baseline. |
| Charisma | 17 | Your primary offensive ability for spells and the bound weapon. |
This is one guide’s allocation, not a mandatory array. At level 8, the cited progression raises Charisma by 2.
Level-by-level Hexblade progression
The defining turn in the build arrives at level 3, when Pact of the Blade and Shadow Blade come online. Continue Warlock at every level:
| Character level | Choice | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hexblade 1 | Gain Hex Warrior and the subclass’s level-one features. |
| 2 | Hexblade 2: Agonising Blast, Beast Speech | Agonising Blast strengthens Eldritch Blast; Beast Speech adds utility. |
| 3 | Hexblade 3: Pact of the Blade, Shadow Blade | Establishes the build’s pact-weapon and psychic-damage focus. |
| 4 | Hexblade 4: Savage Attacker | Take the guide’s feat choice. |
| 5 | Hexblade 5: Pact Extra Attack, Devil’s Sight | Major melee progression, alongside an invocation choice. |
| 6 | Hexblade 6: Accursed Spectre | Unlocks the ability to raise a qualifying cursed foe as a spectre. |
| 7 | Hexblade 7: Beguiling Influence | The guide’s invocation selection. |
| 8 | Hexblade 8: +2 Charisma | Improves the build’s central ability. |
| 9 | Hexblade 9: Armour of Shadows | The guide’s invocation selection. |
| 10–11 | Continue Hexblade | Keep progressing in the class; the level-10 feature is Armour of Hexes. |
| 12 | Hexblade 12: Lifedrinker | Gain the level-12 invocation and complete the single-class route. |
The selections are the PC Gamer guide’s proposed progression, not compulsory picks. In particular, the listed invocation and feat choices can be adjusted to your party, equipment, and preferred play style.

How to play the build
Use the curse on a priority target
Hexblade’s Curse takes a bonus action. Against the cursed target, it adds your proficiency bonus to damage and lowers the roll needed to score a critical hit by one. It recharges on a short rest; killing the target restores hit points based on Warlock level plus Charisma modifier. Because the feature is target-specific, spend it on an enemy you expect to attack repeatedly rather than a foe likely to fall immediately to someone else. See Hexblade’s Curse for its mechanics.

The cited build guide describes Shadow Blade as a short sword dealing 2d8 psychic damage, with 3d8 and up to 4d8 damage when upcast. Pact of the Blade and the Hexblade’s Charisma-based weapon feature support the melee plan. The guide also pairs Shadow Blade with Resonance Stone; treat that as an optimization, not a requirement or an independently verified damage guarantee.
Keep Eldritch Blast as a flexible option
Agonising Blast gives you a ranged option when closing to melee is unsafe, inconvenient, or wasteful. That flexibility is one reason the pure build can handle more than a single combat pattern, though the supplied build guide does not compare ranged and melee damage under common test conditions.

Use the subclass’s defensive and summon features
At level 6, Accursed Spectre can raise a fallen cursed target, and the target’s size determines the spectre type. At level 10, Armour of Hexes uses a reaction and has a 50% chance to nullify an attack from a cursed enemy. These features add control and defense to the weapon-focused progression. Armour of Hexes and the Hexblade feature reference describe their rules.

| Act | Suggested gear | Role in the build |
|---|---|---|
| Act 1 | Knife of the Undermountain King; Spidersilk Armour; Disintegrating Night Walkers; Diadem of Arcane Synergy; Bow of Awareness; Auntie Ethel’s Hair; Bracers of Defence; Ring of Protection | Options for weapon, defense, mobility, and supporting bonuses. |
| Act 2 | Potent Robe; Cloak of Protection; Resonance Stone | Defensive and offensive options; the guide pairs Resonance Stone with Shadow Blade’s psychic damage. |
| Act 3 | Belm | A later weapon option in the guide’s setup. |
Shadow Blade is the centerpiece of the referenced gear plan. The listed items are optimization choices rather than prerequisites for the class to function. Find the full build context in PC Gamer’s Patch 8 build guide.
When another route may suit you better
A pure Hexblade preserves the class’s level-based progression, including its level-6 and level-10 subclass features and level-12 Lifedrinker. Multiclassing may appeal if you have a specific feature or party role in mind, but it delays Warlock milestones. The available build reference does not establish a universal multiclass winner.
Quick Recap
- Choose pure Hexblade if you want the subclass features on schedule and a straightforward Charisma-based melee plan.
- Keep Eldritch Blast prominent if you value having a ranged fallback as much as weapon attacks.
- Prioritize defense and control if you want to use the spectre and Armour of Hexes features as part of the build’s value, rather than chasing only peak damage.
- Multiclass selectively if a defined combination matters more to you than timely Hexblade progression; no common test in the cited guide proves one such pairing best overall.
