Frame generation can make the displayed rate look much higher, but it does not mean the game is rendering at that rate natively, and reviewers reported different latency experiences. These are launch-period results, not verified benchmarks for the latest game patch, drivers, or handheld firmware.
How it performed on the original ROG Ally and Legion Go
The launch-period reports point to a playable experience if you accept lower resolution and image quality than a gaming PC would typically target. They do not establish stable 60 FPS without frame generation on either original Z1 Extreme handheld.
ROG Ally Z1 Extreme
PC Guide’s March 19, 2025, early report describes the original ROG Ally reaching about 30–35 FPS at 720p, Low settings, and FSR 3.1 Performance. With frame generation enabled, the report says the displayed rate rose to around 60 FPS. The Ally’s 1080p screen uses a 16:9 aspect ratio, so 720p is a proportional lower-resolution target. PC Guide’s early test report does not establish performance on current patches or drivers.
Lenovo Legion Go Z1 Extreme
PC Guide reports a broadly similar performance level on the original Legion Go and recommends reducing its native 1600p target to 800p. That preserves the 16:10 screen’s aspect ratio while cutting the rendering workload. The report does not provide a directly comparable full set of settings and test conditions for the Legion Go, so its result should not be read as a controlled head-to-head against the Ally.

Why reported frame rates differ
Results from different handhelds and test setups are not interchangeable. Resolution, power limits, graphics preset, upscaling mode, and frame generation all affect the number a reviewer reports.
| Test | Reported result | Conditions and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Original ROG Ally Z1 Extreme | About 30–35 FPS; around 60 FPS with frame generation | PC Guide, March 19, 2025; 720p, Low, FSR 3.1 Performance. Wattage and plugged-in status are not stated in the cited passage. |
| Original Legion Go Z1 Extreme | Similar broad performance level to the original Ally | PC Guide, March 19, 2025; recommends 800p instead of native 1600p. A specific FPS figure and full matching test conditions are not stated. |
| ROG Ally | 23 FPS average | PC Gamer; 1080p, Low, FSR Balanced, 15W handheld mode. Publication date and plugged-in status are not stated in the cited passage. |
| ROG Ally X | 41 FPS average with frame generation; 23 FPS without it | Windows Central hands-on test; 1080p, Low, FSR Performance. Wattage, plugged-in status, and publication date are not stated in the cited passage. This is the Ally X, not the original Ally Z1 Extreme. |
| Steam Deck | 30–32 FPS | TechRadar, March 19, 2025; 1280×800 with ray tracing set to “RT Everywhere.” This is a different handheld and configuration, not a direct comparison with either device in the title. |
The Ally’s 23 FPS result at 15W and the higher results from other configurations illustrate why a single FPS figure cannot describe every way of playing. Power profile matters too: a higher-wattage mode may improve performance at the cost of battery life, and a plugged-in run is not necessarily representative of handheld play away from a charger.
What frame generation changes—and what it does not
Frame generation inserts generated frames to increase the displayed output rate. That can make motion look smoother, but the output FPS should not be confused with the rate at which the game is rendering underlying frames. It does not turn the original Ally’s 30–35 FPS test into native 60 FPS performance.

Latency impressions also vary by test. TechRadar reported a substantial input-lag increase in its Steam Deck test, while Windows Central said it did not notice latency during its Ally X session. Those are reviewer observations on different devices and configurations, not a universal guarantee about how frame generation will feel on an Ally or Legion Go.

Settings to try on an original Ally or Legion Go
For a starting point based on the early reports, reduce resolution and use a Low preset rather than trying to run at each handheld’s native resolution. PC Guide’s suggestions are 720p on the original Ally and 800p on the original Legion Go; its cited Ally configuration used FSR 3.1 Performance and frame generation for the higher displayed rate.
- Original ROG Ally: start at 720p, Low, and FSR Performance. Enable frame generation only if the smoother-looking output is worth its possible latency tradeoff to you.
- Original Legion Go: start at 800p and Low rather than native 1600p. The report does not establish an exact wattage or a fully specified Legion Go preset, so treat this as a practical starting point, not a guaranteed result.
- Power profile: if performance is below your target, a higher wattage profile may help, but it draws more power and reduces battery life. Windows Central recommends using the highest wattage profile or accepting the battery tradeoff; this is outlet-specific advice, not a universal setting requirement.
Windows Central also suggests assigning 6GB of system memory to the GPU in its Ally X configuration advice and says the original Ally and Legion Go, both described there as Ryzen Z1 Extreme devices with 16GB RAM, should perform similarly. This is that outlet’s recommendation, not a guarantee that the devices will match under every game version or configuration.

How much to trust the built-in benchmark
Ubisoft includes an in-game benchmark that can be run again to compare settings. Follow Ubisoft’s instructions for using the benchmark tool to run it consistently as you adjust resolution or graphics options.
PC Gamer found that the benchmark could report somewhat higher performance than actual gameplay on older or lower-tier processors, and could show stutter that was uncommon during play. Use it as a repeatable indicator for comparing your own settings, then check a demanding gameplay area before deciding that performance is good enough.
So, is it playable?
The early evidence supports a qualified yes: both original Z1 Extreme handhelds can run Shadows around the 30-FPS class in reduced-resolution, reduced-detail configurations. Frame generation may raise the displayed rate, but its effect on responsiveness is not consistent across reports. Since these figures come from launch-period tests rather than current retests, they should guide expectations—not serve as a promise for every patch, driver, or device setup.
