Assassin’s Creed Shadows ranked No. 1 by dollar sales on Circana’s U.S. video game chart for March 2025, according to GamesBeat’s report of the data. It placed second in U.S. year-to-date sales through March, behind Monster Hunter Wilds. The monthly ranking covers dollar sales, not copies sold, and includes only the period after Shadows launched on March 20.
What was the best-selling game in March 2025?
On Circana’s U.S. chart, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows was No. 1 by dollar sales for March 2025. MLB: The Show 25 ranked second and Monster Hunter Wilds third. These rankings are reported by GamesBeat in its Circana-attributed March chart coverage, published April 24, 2025 and updated June 18, 2025.
“Best-selling” refers to revenue measured in dollars, not the number of copies purchased. The report does not provide an individual dollar-sales total or unit-sales count for Shadows.
How did it rank year to date?
Through March 2025, Monster Hunter Wilds led the U.S. year-to-date chart by dollar sales, with Assassin’s Creed: Shadows in second place. The monthly No. 1 and year-to-date No. 2 positions cover different reporting periods, so they are not contradictory.

Why the March timing matters
Ubisoft lists March 20, 2025 as the game’s release date. That means the No. 1 monthly position reflects sales during only the final part of March, rather than a full month on sale. Ubisoft identifies the game as an action-adventure, open-world title developed by Ubisoft Quebec, set in feudal Japan and featuring playable protagonists Naoe and Yasuke. Those details are from the Ubisoft store listing accessed October 8, 2026.
What Circana’s March figures say about the wider U.S. market
Overall U.S. video game sales totaled $4.689 billion in March 2025, down 6% from March 2024. Year-to-date spending through March was $13.709 billion, down 9% year over year. GamesBeat’s chart coverage attributes these figures to Circana; dollar amounts are rounded to the nearest million.

In the report’s category definition, content includes physical and digital full games, DLC and microtransactions, and consumer subscription spending across console, cloud, mobile, portable, PC and VR. The table notes that mobile spending data came from Sensor Tower; the overall content figure should therefore be understood with that attribution distinction. The category totals are presented separately and should not be added together as if they were independent of the reported overall total.
Mat Piscatella, identified by GamesBeat as Circana’s executive producer for games reports, said March hardware spending was the lowest for that month since 2019, when it was $279 million. He also said the only segments growing year over year were non-mobile subscriptions, up 11%, and digital premium console downloads, up 12%; mobile content spending was down 6%, with mobile data from Sensor Tower. Those market-wide trends do not describe Shadows’ individual sales.

What the ranking can—and cannot—show
The chart establishes that Shadows led the reported U.S. market by dollar sales in March; it does not establish the game’s unit sales, profitability, lifetime performance or whether it met Ubisoft’s internal targets. The chart also depends on publisher-reported digital data. GamesBeat notes that Nintendo does not report its digital sales to Circana, so chart positions should be read with the coverage caveats attached to individual entries rather than treated as perfectly complete comparisons across platforms. GamesBeat counted seven new releases among the March top 20, the most in 2025 at that point, including Shadows.
