Assassin’s Creed Shadows: What Ubisoft’s Day-One Patch Changed—and What Was Japan-Specific

Ubisoft’s Japan-specific version changes concerned dismemberment and voice performance; a separate, cautiously attributed report described a day-one patch for all players.

Ubisoft’s response to Japanese criticism, the content differences announced for Japan’s release, and the reported day-one patch were three separate developments. The patch was reported as applying to all players, while Japan-specific changes concerned dismemberment and some voice performance. The patch details come from a secondary report that could not be independently checked against its cited source.

What did the reported day-one patch change?

A Yahoo Tech search-result report said Ubisoft confirmed a day-one patch for all players, not only Japan. It described two kinds of changes: making tables and racks in temples and shrines indestructible, and changing how violence against civilians worked. The report attributed its patch-note information to IGN; the underlying IGN page could not be checked, so these details should be understood as reported rather than independently verified official patch notes. Read the Yahoo Tech report.

Was that patch specific to Japan?

No: the Yahoo Tech report characterized the day-one patch as applying to all players. That is distinct from changes Ubisoft Japan announced for the Japanese release, which it said would conform to domestic review-organization rules. The available sources do not establish that the patch was caused by the criticism or that its changes were intended to implement Japan’s version requirements.

What changes did Ubisoft announce for the Japanese version?

In a statement dated 24 January 2025, Ubisoft Japan listed differences between the Japanese and North American/European versions. These concerned depictions of dismemberment and some Japanese voice performance in the overseas version. See Ubisoft Japan’s version-differences statement.

What had Ubisoft said about Japanese criticism?

On 23 July 2024, the Assassin’s Creed Shadows Development Team addressed the Japanese community, acknowledging positive reactions as well as criticism, including from Japanese players, and saying some promotional material had caused concern. The statement does not measure how widespread or representative that concern was. Ubisoft framed the game as historical fiction, not a factual representation of history, and said the team had worked with external consultants, historians, researchers, and colleagues at Ubisoft Japan.
