If Assetto Corsa crashes on startup, will not launch, or fails while loading a race on the Steam PC version, start with reversible checks: restart your PC, update Windows and your graphics driver, verify the game files in Steam, and close non-essential background software. Retry after each step so you can identify what changes the behavior. These checks address common launch problems, but they are not a guaranteed diagnosis; Steam notes that causes vary across hardware and software configurations.
Start with the failure point
Before changing anything, note when the problem occurs and whether an error appears. That helps distinguish a game that does nothing after clicking Play from one that opens its launcher but crashes when you enter a session.
- Steam does nothing or the game exits immediately: record whether the launcher appeared and whether Steam showed an error.
- The launcher opens, but a session will not start: note whether the failure happens when selecting a car or track, entering a session, or loading the race.
- The game crashes during loading: write down the exact point and any error text.
Change one condition at a time and retry. If you update drivers, verify files, and alter several settings all at once, it becomes harder to tell which change mattered.
Try these reversible fixes in order
1. Restart the PC
Restart Windows fully, then try launching Assetto Corsa from Steam again. This is a simple first check before changing drivers, files, or configuration.

2. Update Windows and your graphics driver
Install available Windows updates and the appropriate graphics driver update for your GPU, then restart if prompted and test the game. If the failure began immediately after a driver update, record that timing rather than assuming the latest driver is necessarily the cause.
3. Verify the game files in Steam
- Open your Steam Library.
- Right-click Assetto Corsa and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then launch the game again.
Steam recommends checking game files as part of its general launch troubleshooting. Verification can address damaged or incomplete installation files, but it will not establish that files were the cause if the game still fails.

4. Close non-essential background software
Exit programs you do not need for the test, especially software that interacts with games, overlays, or input. Retry from Steam. If this changes the result, re-enable programs one at a time to narrow down a possible conflict.

These are the game’s published requirements, not a guarantee that every PC meeting them will launch successfully. Steam separately states that its client has supported Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024. That client-support note is newer than the game’s older minimum-OS listing, so do not treat the listed Windows 7 or 8 compatibility as evidence that the current Steam client supports those systems. Steam also lists keyboard or gamepad input as required and VR support through SteamVR or Oculus PC; neither a wheel nor VR hardware is a launch-failure remedy.
If your installation uses mods or custom content
Try a clean, unmodded launch to see whether the base game behaves differently. Back up settings before moving, disabling, or changing files, and change only one thing per retry. If the unmodded game launches, that narrows the issue to something in the modded setup, but it does not identify a particular mod or prove that a specific tool is responsible. Official guidance does not establish Content Manager, custom content, or Custom Shaders Patch as the cause of any individual crash.

Gather details if the game still will not launch
When the checks do not resolve the problem, preserve a short diagnostic record before contacting support. The DMM GAMES Japanese publisher FAQ asks whether the player is using the Steam version and points to error logs that may be available in Documents/Assetto Corsa/logs.
- State whether you use the Steam version.
- Describe whether the failure happens before the launcher, when entering a session, or while loading a race.
- Include the exact error message, if one appears.
- Attach available logs from Documents/Assetto Corsa/logs.
- List the troubleshooting steps already tried and what changed after each one.
Steam’s general guidance emphasizes that launch failures can have different causes on different configurations, so the failure point, error text, and logs are more useful than assuming one fix applies to every PC.
