Astro Bot is a joyful PS5 platformer built around three pleasures: lively levels that keep changing, the satisfaction of rescuing bots and uncovering secrets, and playful nods to PlayStation history. Its cameos add extra delight for longtime fans, but the colorful platforming works even if those references are unfamiliar.
What is Astro Bot?
Astro Bot is a Team Asobi platform game for PS5. Its central routine is simple to grasp: run, jump, and use abilities to navigate a stage, rescue scattered bots, and look for secrets and collectibles before reaching the exit. Optional discoveries make exploration part of the fun rather than a detour from the main route.

The scale depends on which official description you consult. Team Asobi’s May 2024 launch announcement described six galaxies and over 80 levels; PlayStation’s current US product page describes more than 50 planets. Those are different terms from different descriptions, not counts to combine.
Is Astro Bot fun to play?
Yes: the strongest praise from reviewers is for how often the game changes the feel of its platforming. Levels introduce distinct settings, hazards, and abilities, giving the adventure a playful pace instead of relying on one trick throughout. Push Square’s review calls it the work of a developer that keeps “fun and playfulness at the forefront.” TechRadar described it as “a joyous Game of the Year contender”—a verdict, not an award or an objective ranking.

- Face thrilling, unpredictable challenges as you explore distinctive hand-crafted lands through deeply immersive and expressive controls.
- PERILOUS PLATFORMING EXPERIENCE - Explore here, there and everywhere as you utilize Sackboy’s cool, diverse move-set to face a huge variety of thrilling challenges, fierce enemies and startling surprises.
- RE-STUFFED. RE-STITCHED. RE-ZIPPED - Sackboy returns to the big time stuffed with fresh moves and game-changing gadgets in an awe-inspiring and downright fun 3D adventure in this new, but familiar world.
The range of ideas is more persuasive than any single gimmick. GameSpot’s review highlights a clever day-and-night mechanic in one stage, though it notes that this idea is not repeated elsewhere. That makes the level memorable, but also hints at a broader trade-off: some concepts are brief showcases rather than systems the game develops over many stages.
Does exploring feel rewarding?
Rescuing bots and finding hidden routes gives each level a reason to explore beyond its finish line. The rewards include more than progress toward completion: discoveries reveal playful scenes and add to the cast of rescued characters. GameSpot’s review describes 300 bots to rescue, with over half dressed as recognizable video-game characters; PlayStation’s current product page instead advertises over 150 iconic PlayStation heroes. These figures describe different categories from different sources.
Completion-minded players can revisit stages to find what they missed. TechRadar’s review notes that a bird that points toward collectibles can make cleanup less frustrating. There is a small route-planning annoyance: TechRadar also reports that entering a Lost Galaxy portal can mark a level complete, so a player who intended to finish the ordinary route may need to restart it.
How does the PlayStation nostalgia work?
Many bots borrow the look of characters from PlayStation games, while levels and encounters include franchise references. The pleasure is recognition: a familiar face appears in Astro’s miniature, comic world rather than taking over the adventure. The current PlayStation page lists over 150 iconic PlayStation heroes, while GameSpot’s separate bot count describes how many characters it saw in its playthrough.

The references are an extra layer, not a prerequisite. In The Guardian’s review, Keza MacDonald observed that some nods passed over her children’s heads while they were absorbed by the game’s bright, cute presentation. That distinction captures the appeal: longtime fans may catch more jokes, but newcomers can enjoy the platforming without knowing the history behind every bot.
Does Astro Bot use the DualSense well?
The controller’s haptics and adaptive triggers contribute to the feel of movement and combat rather than functioning as a mere feature checklist. TechRadar describes tactile feedback across those actions, and Push Square praises the implementation. Team Asobi studio head Nicolas Doucet had previously cited community enthusiasm for the DualSense and PlayStation-history tributes in Astro’s earlier appearance; that comment is useful context for the sequel’s design lineage, not a review of this game.
TechRadar also reports that gyro aiming can be switched to stick controls, and mentions visual aiming aids and camera recentering. These options are helpful examples, not a full accessibility assessment. The game’s controller features do not, by themselves, establish a need to buy an additional DualSense.

Playtime varies with skill, route, and how many collectibles you pursue. TechRadar estimated 10–15 hours for the main campaign and 20 or a little more for completionists. GameSpot characterized its own playthrough as a 15-hour game. Treat those as reviewer estimates, not guaranteed times.

Who should play Astro Bot?
It is an especially natural fit for PS5 owners who enjoy 3D platforming, playful challenges, searching for collectibles, or spotting PlayStation references. Its welcoming presentation makes it approachable for people who are newer to the games represented by the cameos, while the character nods give longtime fans another reason to look closely.
If you mainly want a long campaign, the reviewer estimates suggest a relatively compact main adventure, with extra time available for completion and post-launch stages. No current price or directly comparable playtime benchmark is established here, so the case for value depends on whether its varied platforming and optional discoveries are the sort of play you enjoy.
