Yes—ASUS and Microsoft were working together on an Xbox handheld. The collaboration became the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, two Windows 11 gaming handhelds released on October 16, 2025.
They are official Xbox-branded devices, but they are not portable Xbox Series consoles. They are handheld PCs built by ASUS and AMD, with an Xbox-focused interface, access to supported Xbox and PC games, cloud gaming, and Remote Play.

How the Xbox handheld rumor started
The original evidence appeared on April 1, 2025, when ASUS posted a teaser featuring its ROG mascot, an existing ROG Ally, and a controller. The official Xbox account replied with the “Awkward Look Monkey Puppet” meme.

The April Fools’ date also made caution appropriate: game companies frequently use April 1 for jokes and ambiguous promotions.

Contemporary reporting also mentioned the alleged codename “Keenan”, Xbox-style buttons, and a possible late-2025 release. Those were pre-announcement reports, not official product details. The original report is preserved in this April 2025 coverage.
The broad conclusion, however, was right. Microsoft and ASUS eventually announced the products publicly, and both launched on October 16, 2025.
What Microsoft and ASUS released
The finished products are the ROG Xbox Ally and the higher-specification ROG Xbox Ally X. Microsoft describes them as devices developed in partnership with ASUS and AMD.

Are these real Xbox consoles?
They are real Xbox-branded handhelds, but not traditional Xbox consoles. Both models run Windows 11 Home rather than the Xbox console operating system. The Xbox experience is provided through a full-screen interface, Xbox app integration, Game Bar features, and services such as Play Anywhere, Cloud Gaming, and Remote Play.
That distinction matters. A conventional Xbox console has a tightly controlled operating system and a console game library designed for its hardware. The ROG Xbox Ally models remain Windows PCs. They can run Windows games and access multiple PC storefronts, including Xbox, Battle.net, and other leading services. They therefore offer more PC flexibility than an Xbox console, but also retain some of Windows’ setup, launcher, compatibility, and troubleshooting overhead.
What the Xbox software adds
- Xbox full-screen experience: The handheld can boot into an Xbox-inspired gaming interface rather than dropping the user straight into a conventional desktop.
- Dedicated Xbox button: The controller layout provides direct access to Xbox features.
- Game Bar: Players can reach their library, chat, widgets, and system tools from the gaming interface.
- Aggregated library: Installed Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net, and other PC games can appear in one place instead of requiring a separate launcher for every title.
- ASUS Armoury Crate SE integration: ASUS’ handheld controls and system tools remain part of the experience.
- Handheld Compatibility Program: Xbox provides compatibility guidance for supported games.
- Windows Performance Fit indicators: These indicators are intended to communicate how a game is expected to perform on handheld hardware.
- Gaming Copilot: Gaming Copilot was listed as a beta feature where available.
Compatibility labels and performance indicators are useful guidance, not guarantees of a fixed frame rate, graphics preset, battery life, or flawless controller support. PC games can behave differently depending on their settings, updates, anti-cheat system, launcher, and power mode.
What games can you actually play?
The phrase “Xbox handheld” can obscure several different ways of accessing games. The ROG Xbox Ally is best understood through these categories.
1. Native Windows games
Windows PC games can run locally on the handheld, provided the device meets the game’s hardware requirements and the game supports its launcher, controls, DRM, and anti-cheat system. This includes games obtained through Xbox and other PC storefronts.

Local performance varies substantially. A game may require a lower resolution, reduced settings, a frame-rate cap, or a different power profile to deliver a good handheld experience. The Xbox compatibility program can help set expectations, but it does not turn every PC title into a console-like install-and-play experience.
2. Xbox Play Anywhere titles
Supported Xbox Play Anywhere games are the clearest bridge between Xbox and PC. When a title qualifies, ownership can extend across Xbox consoles, PC, and supported gaming handhelds without buying the game again. Saves, add-ons, and achievements can carry across supported platforms.
Play Anywhere is title-specific. It does not mean every game purchased for an Xbox console automatically receives a local Windows version. Check the individual game’s platform support before assuming it will install and run natively.
3. Xbox Cloud Gaming
Cloud Gaming can stream supported Xbox games to the handheld where the service, game, device, and region are supported. It requires an eligible Game Pass plan. The experience depends on internet quality, latency, network congestion, subscription status, and the availability of the particular game.
Cloud streaming is therefore an access method, not proof that the game runs locally on the Ally’s hardware.
4. Xbox Remote Play
Remote Play streams games from the player’s own Xbox console to the handheld. This can provide access to console games that do not have a Windows PC version, but the home console must be configured and available, and the experience depends on the network connection between the console, handheld, and internet.
Rank #4
Remote Play and online console multiplayer can have separate subscription and availability requirements. Xbox’s current service terms should be checked for the player’s region and account.

5. Games that may not be available
A game may be unavailable locally if it has no compatible Windows version, is not supported by Play Anywhere, cannot be streamed through Cloud Gaming, and cannot be reached through Remote Play. A game can also be technically installable but impractical because of control layouts, anti-cheat behavior, launcher problems, or demanding hardware requirements.
Do you need Game Pass?
No—not for every use case. Purchased PC games and compatible games from other storefronts can be played locally without Game Pass. Game Pass becomes relevant when you want its catalog, Xbox Cloud Gaming, or other plan-specific benefits.
Catalogs, cloud access, online features, pricing, and included promotions vary by subscription tier, region, device, and time. Do not treat Game Pass as a universal key for native access to every Xbox console game.

Which ROG Xbox Ally should you choose?
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally if:
- You want the lower entry price while retaining the Xbox-focused interface.
- You mainly play lighter PC games, supported Play Anywhere titles, or streamed games.
- You are comfortable managing storage or adding expansion storage over time.
- You want a Windows handheld but do not need the Ally X’s additional memory, battery capacity, or controls.
The base model’s 16GB of memory and 60Wh battery are its main compromises relative to the X. They may matter more as demanding games and Windows handheld requirements increase.
Best Value

Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if:
- You want more performance headroom from the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor.
- You expect to run demanding Windows games locally.
- You value 24GB of memory and 1TB of storage.
- You want the larger 80Wh battery.
- You will use the USB4 connectivity, impulse triggers, or assignable rear buttons.
The Ally X is the more capable model on paper, but its $999.99 estimated U.S. retailer price makes the value question significant. Its larger battery and added hardware do not remove the normal limitations of handheld PC gaming, and performance still depends on the individual game and selected power mode.
Reasons to choose something else
The ROG Xbox Ally family is a strong fit for players who want Xbox services and Windows flexibility in one device. It is less compelling for several other audiences.
- Value-focused buyers: The Ally X is expensive for a handheld PC, while the base Ally gives up memory and battery capacity.
- Steam-first players: A SteamOS-focused device such as the Steam Deck may provide a more coherent experience if most of your library is on Steam.
- Console-only buyers: The Xbox interface does not convert Windows into a closed console platform. Desktop settings, launchers, updates, and PC compatibility issues remain possible.
- Players expecting every Xbox game locally: Console ownership and PC availability are not interchangeable. Play Anywhere, a PC version, Cloud Gaming, and Remote Play are separate paths.
- Players with unreliable internet: Cloud Gaming and Remote Play are dependent on network quality and are not substitutes for local installation in every situation.
Other Windows handheld families, including the Lenovo Legion Go, MSI Claw, and ASUS’ broader ROG Ally range, may also be worth comparing. Exact models, prices, availability, and processors differ, so a comparison should use the specific device rather than treating each family as one fixed product.
The bottom line
The April 1, 2025 rumor was substantially correct about the partnership, but its original tentative framing is no longer the current answer. ASUS and Microsoft did make an Xbox handheld: the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X launched on October 16, 2025.
The important qualification is what “Xbox handheld” means here. These are Windows 11 gaming PCs with a purpose-built Xbox experience—not smaller Xbox Series consoles. Their value comes from combining local Windows gaming, supported Play Anywhere ownership, PC storefronts, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Remote Play in a more console-like handheld interface.
