ASUS and Xbox turned the rumored partner handheld into two real products: the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. ASUS builds the Windows 11 handheld PCs, co-developed with Xbox; they are not Microsoft-made Xbox consoles. Their launch also fits Xbox’s stated plan to bring its platform across handhelds, consoles, PCs, cloud gaming, and accessories—but it does not confirm a separate Microsoft handheld or a future console timetable.
What happened to the rumored ASUS Xbox handheld?
ASUS announced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X on June 8, 2025, followed by Microsoft’s partnership announcement on June 9. ASUS announced October 16, 2025 as the on-shelf date. The devices were initially associated in reporting with the codename “Project Kennan,” but the products that emerged are ASUS-built handheld PCs co-developed with Xbox. ASUS’s announcement and Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog describe the collaboration.
Are the ROG Xbox Ally handhelds Xbox consoles or Windows PCs?
They are Windows 11 handheld gaming PCs with an Xbox full-screen experience, not conventional Xbox consoles in a portable shell. The interface brings together installed PC games, including titles from Xbox and Game Pass where available, Battle.net, and other leading PC stores. Windows software access and PC storefronts are part of the proposition; the Xbox branding does not mean every console game runs locally.
There are several distinct ways to play Xbox games, each with its own requirements:
#1 Best Overall
- [Xbox experience brought to life by ROG] : The Xbox gaming legacy meets ROG's decades of premium hardware design in the ROG Xbox Ally. Boot straight into the Xbox experience just like a console.
- [Xbox Game Bar integration] : Launch Game Bar with a tap of the Xbox button or play your favorite titles natively from platforms like Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games, or Windows games on the go.
- [All your games, all your progress]: Powered by Windows 11, the ROG Xbox Ally gives you access to your full library of PC games from Xbox and other game stores. With Xbox Play Anywhere, you can pick up right where you left off on your PC or Xbox and jump back into the game anytime.
- [Never stop gaming]: Powered by ultra-efficient AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, the ROG Xbox Ally offers console-caliber performance and can game for hours, even away from a wall outlet.
- [Game-ready storage and fast memory]: Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.
- Installed PC games: Play compatible games installed on the handheld, from Xbox or other PC storefronts.
- Xbox Play Anywhere: Supported titles can be played across console, PC, and handheld with one purchase. Xbox said its September 25, 2025 preorder announcement covered more than 1,000 supported titles; that is the announcement’s figure, not a promise that every Xbox game is included.
- Remote Play: Stream games from your own Xbox console to the handheld, typically over a home network.
- Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta): Stream supported games where the service is available, subject to its requirements and network conditions.
Those options are not interchangeable: native PC installation, cross-device entitlement, streaming from a console, and cloud streaming offer different libraries and depend on different hardware, service, and network conditions. See Xbox Wire’s preorder announcement for its feature descriptions.
How do the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X compare?
The Ally X is the higher-spec model, with a more powerful processor class, more memory, twice the internal storage, a larger battery, and impulse triggers. ASUS’s launch specifications and Microsoft’s developer resource list these differences:

How does Xbox help players judge game compatibility?
Xbox’s Handheld Compatibility Program uses the labels “Handheld Optimized” and “Mostly Compatible.” ASUS says Optimized games should offer controller inputs, readable text, and suitable full-screen resolution. Mostly Compatible games may require minor settings changes. ASUS said thousands of games would carry one of those labels at launch; that launch-time statement should not be read as a current catalog count. Compatibility labels are useful screening information, not a guarantee that every game will run identically across both models or after updates. ASUS’s announcement explains the labels.

What is the “bigger play” behind the partnership?
Xbox has described its strategy as building across console, handheld, PC, cloud, and accessories. On June 19, 2025, Xbox also announced a multi-year partnership with AMD to co-engineer silicon for a portfolio that includes future first-party consoles and cloud products. Together, those announcements support a cross-device platform strategy: Xbox is extending its experience beyond a single console, while the Ally hardware comes from a partner. They do not announce the timing or specifications of a next-generation console, or prove that another handheld is coming. Read Xbox’s AMD partnership announcement for the stated scope.
Will Microsoft make its own handheld?
That remains unresolved by the official announcements cited here. Windows Central reported on July 14, 2025 that Microsoft had sidelined plans for a separate first-party handheld while focusing on the ASUS collaboration. That is secondary reporting, not an official confirmation that Microsoft will never make its own device. The confirmed point is narrower: ASUS makes the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X with Xbox, and Xbox is pursuing a broader cross-device platform approach. Windows Central’s report covers the separate-handheld claim.
What should buyers know about storage and Game Pass offers?
Xbox’s September 25, 2025 announcement described a separately sold microSD card, with capacity up to 2 TB, and a three-month Xbox Game Pass offer in select markets, subject to terms. Those were announcement details, not confirmation of current card compatibility, local inventory, pricing, or an active subscription promotion. Check local listings and the current offer terms before relying on either. Xbox Wire’s announcement gives the original qualifications.
