The ASUS ROG Ally is already a Windows gaming PC, but its default desktop experience is not always ideal for handheld play. The most useful setup is not the one with every launcher installed: it is a small collection of apps that covers your game libraries, controller-friendly navigation, and communication.
For most owners, the five best additions are Steam, the Xbox app, Epic Games Store, Discord, and Playnite. Armoury Crate SE is not included because it is already part of the Ally software experience. Install it again only if it is missing or damaged.

This advice applies broadly to the 2023 ROG Ally, 2024 ROG Ally X, and 2025 ROG Xbox Ally models. Menus and features can differ between models and Windows updates.

The five apps at a glance
- Steam: the essential PC storefront and controller-friendly library.
- Xbox app: the gateway to PC Game Pass and Xbox social features.
- Epic Games Store: useful for Epic purchases, free games, Fortnite, and Epic accounts.
- Discord: voice chat, text chat, and gaming communities.
- Playnite: a unified full-screen library for games spread across multiple launchers.
If you want advanced power, fan, gyro, or control customization, you can consider Handheld Companion or G-Helper instead of Playnite. They are optional power-user tools, not universal requirements.

Before installing anything, update the Ally
- Open Settings → Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Open MyASUS and install available driver, firmware, and BIOS updates.
- Open Armoury Crate SE → Settings → Update Center and apply available ASUS updates.
- Restart the Ally before installing a large game library.
ASUS describes Armoury Crate SE as the Ally’s control-center and game-library layer. It supports major launchers including Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic Games Launcher, Ubisoft Connect, EA app, and GOG Galaxy, and can import installed games into its Game Library. 1. Steam
Download Steam from Valve if you buy games from Steam or use Steam Input. It remains the most important PC gaming storefront for many Ally owners.
What Steam adds
- Steam Input: remap controls and create per-game layouts when a game’s controller support is weak.
- Big Picture Mode: a more suitable interface for navigating with the Ally’s controls.
- Steam Cloud: cloud saves where the individual game supports them.
- Library management: Steam can also launch some non-Steam programs, although this does not transfer ownership, achievements, or cloud saves.
Enable Big Picture Mode if you want a console-like front end. Do not assume every PC game is handheld-friendly: some still require a mouse, keyboard, separate launcher login, or anti-cheat service.

If a game crashes or a shortcut stops working, disable overlays one at a time rather than changing everything at once.
2. Xbox app for PC
Install the official Xbox app from Microsoft through the Microsoft Store. It is essential if you use PC Game Pass, own Xbox Play Anywhere games, or want Xbox social features.
Installation steps
- Open the Microsoft Store.
- Search for Xbox.
- Install or update the official Xbox app.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to your Xbox purchases or subscription.
- Choose an appropriate installation drive in the app’s settings.
- Install a small test game before moving a large library to a microSD card.
The Xbox app supports game browsing and installation, friends and chat features, and links with services including Steam and Discord. Microsoft’s controller-focused Xbox experience for Windows PCs and handhelds is documented at Xbox on PC.

PC Game Pass is a subscription, not ownership. Access can end when the subscription ends or when a game leaves the catalog. Availability, features, plans, and pricing vary by country, platform, and time. Microsoft’s U.S. page displayed $13.99 per month when checked in August 2026; verify the current price before subscribing at the official PC Game Pass page.
If installation fails, update Windows and the Microsoft Store, check Gaming Services, sign out and back in, and restart the Ally. Avoid unofficial repair scripts.
3. Epic Games Store
Download Epic Games Store from Epic if you own Epic games, have claimed its free-game giveaways, play Fortnite, or rely on an Epic account for cross-platform progression.
Epic is conditional rather than essential for every Ally owner. It adds another login, updater, overlay, and background service, and its controller-first experience may feel less consistent than Steam Big Picture.
Recommended setup
- Install the launcher to the internal SSD initially.
- Sign in and enable automatic updates unless bandwidth or storage makes that impractical.
- Use Epic’s own settings for downloads and cloud saves.
- If Armoury Crate does not detect it, add the launcher or game manually through the Game Library.
Some Epic games also start a publisher launcher. Installing Epic does not remove those additional account or update requirements.
4. Discord
Download Discord from its official site if you play with friends, use gaming communities, or need cross-platform voice and text chat.

After signing in, manually select your microphone and output device instead of relying entirely on automatic switching. Test Discord while a game is running. A Bluetooth headset can change microphone quality, add latency, or switch Windows audio profiles.
The Ally’s controls are not ideal for navigating Discord, so use Xbox Game Bar or a mapped shortcut for quick access where practical. Discord overlay, Xbox Game Bar, Steam overlay, and game overlays can compete for hotkeys and resources; turn off unnecessary overlays if shortcuts or stability become a problem.
Discord is a communication utility, not a performance or battery-life upgrade. Disable unnecessary startup behavior if you want faster boot times and fewer background processes.
5. Playnite
Playnite is the best choice for owners whose games are scattered across Steam, Xbox, Epic, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, and other launchers.
Why it helps
- Combines multiple libraries into one interface.
- Offers a controller-friendly full-screen mode.
- Reduces trips to the Windows desktop.
- Lets you choose one preferred front end instead of opening every launcher separately.
Playnite is a third-party library manager, not an ASUS or Microsoft component. Keep the original launchers installed: Playnite generally organizes and starts games rather than replacing store services, ownership systems, or publisher authentication. Review what each integration installs and accesses, and expect behavior to vary after launcher updates.
Install Playnite after the other launchers are installed and signed in. That gives it the best chance of discovering your existing libraries. It is not necessary for a Steam-only player who prefers Steam Big Picture, or for someone who uses Xbox mode exclusively.

Choose one main handheld interface

Do not configure all four to launch at startup. Keep the native launchers installed, but choose one primary front end. Otherwise the Ally can feel slower and more complicated despite having all the right games.
Recommended installation order
- Install the Xbox app if you use Game Pass.
- Install Steam.
- Install Epic Games Store only if you need its library or services.
- Install Discord if you use voice or community chat.
- Install Playnite after the other launchers are signed in and configured.
Then open Armoury Crate SE’s Game Library. If a launcher or game is missing, use its add/import function and select the correct executable. Avoid selecting an updater, crash reporter, or launcher shortcut when the actual game executable is available.
Optional launchers you should install only when needed
- GOG Galaxy: useful for a substantial GOG library.
- Ubisoft Connect: required for Ubisoft purchases and some Ubisoft-linked games.
- EA app: required for many EA titles outside an integrated Game Pass flow.
- Xbox Game Bar: already included with Windows and useful for quick audio, capture, and social controls.
- OBS Studio: appropriate for streaming or advanced recording, not ordinary play.
Installing every launcher “just in case” creates more updates, overlays, logins, and startup processes without improving the experience.
Power-user alternatives: Handheld Companion and G-Helper
Handheld Companion can offer more granular controls, power profiles, gyro features, and overlays depending on the hardware and current version. G-Helper is a lightweight, community-maintained alternative popular with users who want fewer ASUS background services.
Neither is required for normal Ally use, and neither is an ASUS-supported replacement for Armoury Crate SE. Running one alongside Armoury Crate can create duplicated hotkeys, competing services, and unclear ownership of power or fan settings. A poorly configured profile can cause instability, throttling, fan noise, or battery drain.

Do not disable Windows security features or remove ASUS services merely to chase an unverified performance improvement. Never install both casually.
Troubleshooting common problems
A game does not appear in Armoury Crate
- Restart Armoury Crate SE.
- Launch the game once from its native launcher.
- Confirm it is installed locally rather than being only a cloud shortcut.
- Add the correct executable manually.
- Check alternate drives and shortcuts.
The game launches but the controls do not work
- Switch to the correct control mode in Armoury Crate.
- Test the game directly through its native launcher.
- Check Steam Input or the game’s controller settings.
- Disable competing overlays temporarily.
- Restart after changing controller services.
The game installs to the wrong drive
- Set the install location inside the individual launcher.
- Check Windows storage settings.
- Keep launchers on the internal SSD if a microSD card is slow or intermittently detected.
- Do not move an active library while downloads or updates are running.
A microSD card is not automatically unreliable, but speed, capacity, heat, filesystem errors, and card authenticity all matter. Keep backups of important saves and avoid assuming every card is suitable for demanding modern games.
Bottom line
Install Steam, the Xbox app, Discord, and Playnite if they match the way you play. Add Epic Games Store only when you have an Epic library or need an Epic service. Keep Armoury Crate SE and MyASUS updated, choose one main launcher interface, and treat Handheld Companion or G-Helper as advanced alternatives rather than mandatory upgrades.
