What this file actually does
fmodstudio64.dll is part of FMOD Studio, an audio engine and authoring system made by Firelight Technologies. Games use FMOD to play music, dialogue, sound effects, adaptive audio and other in-game sounds.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
It is a native 64-bit library. The game loads it at startup, then FMOD usually loads its matching Core library and initializes the audio system. In older FMOD distributions, the two important files are commonly:

The Studio library provides the higher-level Studio API. The Core library handles lower-level audio functionality. This is why an error naming fmodstudio64.dll can still be caused by a missing fmod64.dll.

Current FMOD Windows documentation generally uses unsuffixed names inside architecture-specific folders:
api\core\lib\x64\fmod.dll
api\studio\lib\x64\fmodstudio.dll
That does not mean every older game should be changed to use those names. The exact library name depends on the FMOD API generation bundled with the application.
fmodstudio64.dll is not:
- A Windows system file
- A DirectX component
- A graphics driver
- An audio driver
- A .NET Framework file
- A file that should normally be registered with
regsvr32 - A universal DLL that can be shared between games
The copy that belongs to one game may not work with another game. FMOD builds can differ in exports, dependencies, architecture and compatibility with sound banks. The filename alone also does not prove that a file is authentic.
Causes by symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
“fmodstudio64.dll is missing from your computer” after a game update |
The game file was deleted, corrupted or quarantined | Verify the game files in its launcher |
“The code execution cannot proceed because fmodstudio64.dll was not found” |
The file is absent, misplaced or blocked | Verify files, then check Protection History |
| “The specified module could not be found” although the DLL is visible | A dependency such as fmod64.dll or a Visual C++ runtime is missing |
Restore the complete matching runtime set |
System.DllNotFoundException in a C# project |
The output folder lacks the DLL or one of its dependencies | Check the application output directory and architecture |
System.BadImageFormatException or “incorrect format” |
x86 and x64 files are mixed | Match the process architecture to the FMOD libraries |
| The error appeared after installing a mod | The mod replaced, redirected or removed FMOD files | Remove the mod and verify the unmodified game |
The file was found in System32 but the game still fails |
The application is looking for its private runtime elsewhere | Remove the manual copy and repair the game installation |
| FMOD loads but audio fails afterward | A driver, audio device or FMOD initialization problem | Update the relevant driver after repairing the game files |
The wording varies between Windows versions, game launchers and .NET applications. “Specified module could not be found” means the load operation failed. It does not always mean the named file itself is absent.
Fix 1: Verify the game or application files
This is the most likely solution for a normal PC gamer. It restores missing or damaged files from the launcher’s own installation source, including the correct FMOD build for that game.
Before starting, close the game and its launcher. Do not download fmodstudio64.dll separately.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the scan and repair to finish.
- Restart Steam.
- Launch the game again.
Steam may reacquire only the files that differ from the expected installation. If the game starts, the repair worked.
If Steam reports that files were replaced but the same error returns, restart Windows and run verification again. Then temporarily remove third-party mods, overlays or custom launch arguments before trying the game.
Epic Games Launcher
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the affected game.
- Select the three dots beside its name.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Launch the game from Epic again.
If the Verify option does not repair the problem, open the game’s installation folder and look for a setup or repair program supplied by the publisher.
Other launchers and standalone programs
Look for a menu named Verify, Repair, Scan and repair, Validate, or Check files. The wording differs between launchers, but the purpose is the same.
For a standalone application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options if it is available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- Use Reset only if Repair fails and you are prepared for the application to lose local settings.
Some desktop programs do not expose Repair in Windows Settings. In that case, run the original installer again and choose Repair if offered.
If verification or repair completes successfully but the error remains, continue with the antivirus and dependency checks below. A launcher can report that the main file is present while a dependent file is still missing.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security Protection History
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have removed or blocked the file. This is particularly possible after a game update, a modified executable or an unofficial patch.
Do not immediately disable antivirus protection. First inspect what Windows actually recorded.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any event that names the affected game folder or
fmodstudio64.dll. - Check the original file path and the detection details.
Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are true:
- It came from the official game or application installation.
- The path is the expected installation directory.
- The launcher or publisher supplied the file.
- You have not recently installed a suspicious mod, crack or unofficial executable.
Microsoft explains the available actions in Windows Security Protection History.
If the file was quarantined, restore it only after confirming the source, then immediately run the launcher’s file verification. Verification is preferable to keeping a manually restored file because it can restore the entire matching FMOD set.

If Windows Security keeps removing the file after verification, do not repeatedly restore it without investigating. Remove unofficial modifications, run a full scan and reinstall the game from its official source.
A temporary game-folder exclusion
A folder exclusion should not be the first fix and should not be used to make an untrusted game safe. If a verified official installation is repeatedly blocked and the publisher’s support instructions specifically recommend an exclusion:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Manage settings.
- Scroll to Exclusions.
- Select Add or remove exclusions.
- Select Add an exclusion.
- Choose Folder.
- Select only the affected game folder.
- Verify the game files again.
- Remove the exclusion after testing if it is no longer needed.
Never exclude the entire drive, the Windows folder or System32.
Fix 3: Make sure the complete FMOD runtime is present
If fmodstudio64.dll exists but Windows still reports that it cannot be loaded, inspect the same application folder for its paired library.
For an older FMOD-based game, look for:
fmodstudio64.dll
fmod64.dll
For a newer FMOD layout, the relevant files may instead be under folders similar to:
api\core\lib\x64\fmod.dll
api\studio\lib\x64\fmodstudio.dll
Do not mix these layouts manually. A game must use the filenames and build expected by its executable and wrapper.

- Right-click the game shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- If the shortcut points to a launcher, open the launcher’s game installation folder instead.
- Search that folder for
fmodstudio64.dll. - Search for
fmod64.dll. - Note whether both files are in the same runtime directory.
- Run file verification from the launcher.
If fmodstudio64.dll is present but fmod64.dll is absent, do not download only fmod64.dll. Restore both files from the same official game package.
Windows searches for dependent libraries separately from the first library. The documented DLL search order explains why giving an application the full path to one DLL does not guarantee that its dependencies can be found.
Fix 4: Reinstall the game’s bundled redistributables
Some games include prerequisite installers in folders named:
_CommonRedist
Redist
Support
Prerequisites
These folders are often inside the game installation directory. They may contain Visual C++, DirectX or other runtime installers required by the game.

- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Repair if the installer offers it.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the launcher’s file verification again.
- Test the game.
Do not install every file in every prerequisite folder at random. Use the installer supplied with the game and pay attention to whether it is intended for x86 or x64 applications.
If the game’s own installer is damaged, uninstall the game, restart Windows and reinstall it from the official launcher. Keep saved-game backups if the game stores them inside its installation directory.
Fix 5: Check x86 versus x64 architecture
The 64 in fmodstudio64.dll indicates a 64-bit FMOD build. A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit native DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot use a 32-bit replacement.
Architecture problems commonly produce:
System.BadImageFormatException: An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.
They can also appear as “incorrect format” or status 0xc000007b. Microsoft documents this class of problem in its BadImageFormatException reference.
For an installed game
Do not replace the game’s DLL based on the fact that Windows itself is 64-bit. A 64-bit version of Windows can run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications.
Use the launcher’s verification process to restore the architecture selected by the game publisher. If a game offers separate executable versions, use the one that matches the installed FMOD files.
For a C# application
Check the project settings and output directory.
- Open the project in Visual Studio.
- Select Build.
- Select Configuration Manager.
- Check whether the active configuration is intended for x64 or x86.
- Open the project’s Properties.
- Select the Build tab.
- Set Platform target to
x64when using the 64-bit FMOD libraries. - If the project uses
Any CPU, review Prefer 32-bit and disable it when the application must run as a 64-bit process. - Rebuild the project.
- Open the resulting
binoutput folder. - Confirm that the matching FMOD libraries are copied there.
An older wrapper may expect fmodstudio64.dll and fmod64.dll. A newer wrapper may expect fmodstudio.dll and fmod.dll from an x64 API directory. Follow the names required by that wrapper rather than renaming files.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix 6: Repair a custom C# or native FMOD integration
The error is especially misleading in custom applications because the named file can exist while another required file is missing.
For an older C# integration, the executable output folder may need both:
fmodstudio64.dll
fmod64.dll
Use this checklist:
- Open the project output directory.
- Confirm that the Studio DLL is present.
- Confirm that the matching Core DLL is present.
- Confirm that both files came from the same FMOD API package.
- Check that the wrapper references the correct architecture.
- Check that the application process is actually x64.
- Confirm that the files are copied after every build.
- Check the publish folder, not only the development folder.
- Remove stale FMOD files from the output directory.
- Copy the complete matching runtime set again.
- Rebuild and rerun the application.
A DllNotFoundException naming fmodstudio64.dll can occur because fmod64.dll is missing. A BadImageFormatException usually points more strongly toward an architecture mismatch.
Do not combine headers, import libraries, wrappers, plugins, sound banks and native DLLs from different FMOD releases. Keep the complete SDK or API package together.

Fix 7: Undo a mod or unofficial patch
Mods can replace FMOD libraries, redirect the executable to another folder or remove files during installation. An unofficial patch can also bundle an incompatible FMOD build.
- Close the game and launcher.
- Remove the recently installed mod or patch.
- Restore any backed-up original files.
- Run the launcher’s file verification.
- Start the unmodified game.
- Confirm that it launches and plays audio.
- Reinstall only mods that explicitly support that game version.
If the game works without the mod, the FMOD error is a compatibility problem rather than a Windows DLL problem. Contact the mod author or use a version designed for the installed game build.
Fix 8: Repair the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime when the evidence points to it
FMOD’s Windows libraries are built with Microsoft development tools, so a missing Visual C++ runtime can prevent the native DLL from loading. This is conditional, not the universal solution.
Look for clues such as:
- An error naming
VCRUNTIME*.dll - An error naming
MSVCP*.dll - A dependency inspection showing a missing Microsoft runtime
- Multiple native applications failing after a system cleanup
Use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable packages.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe package architecture must match the application:
- x64 application: install or repair the x64 package
- x86 application: install or repair the x86 package
Microsoft’s direct installers are x64 and x86.
After downloading from Microsoft:
- Close the game and launcher.
- Run the redistributable installer.
- Select Repair if it is already installed.
- Allow the installation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the game launcher’s file verification.
- Test the game.
You can also repair an existing package through:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Open its three-dot menu.
- Select Modify.
- Choose Repair.
Older Visual C++ packages can remain installed alongside newer ones. Do not remove every redistributable simply because one game reports an FMOD error.
Fix 9: Use Windows Features only when the application requires .NET
fmodstudio64.dll itself is a native library and does not become fixed merely by enabling random Windows components. Repair or install .NET only when the launcher or application explicitly requires it.
To open Windows Features:
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
optionalfeatures.exe
- Press Enter.
- Enable the specific .NET feature requested by the application.
- Select OK.
- Allow Windows to download the component if prompted.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
Do not enable or disable unrelated features as a general DLL repair. If the application separately reports missing legacy DirectX files such as d3dx, XAudio or XInput, use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime instead.

Fix 10: Run DISM and SFC for wider Windows corruption
DISM and SFC repair Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party FMOD DLL belonging to a game.
Use them when several unrelated Windows applications are failing, Windows features are damaged or system files are also reporting errors.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the game launcher’s file verification again.
- Test the game.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker and DISM instructions.

If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, install pending Windows updates, restart and try again. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart before testing. If both tools complete successfully but only one game still fails, return to the game’s launcher repair process rather than repeating system scans.
Running DISM and SFC manually means hunting through output and repeating commands without always knowing what changed; Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows exactly what it finds, while repair is done by the full version. It is optional, and when fmodstudio64.dll belongs to a game, reinstalling that game remains the definitive fix.
Fix 11: Update audio or graphics drivers only if FMOD loads
A driver is not a replacement for fmodstudio64.dll. Driver work belongs later in the process, especially when the game starts but has no sound, crashes during audio initialization or reports a device problem.
Update an audio driver through Device Manager
- Press
Win+X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device used by the game.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Install the offered driver if Windows finds one.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game.
If the game is crashing during rendering as well, also inspect Display adapters and update the relevant graphics driver through Windows Update or the GPU manufacturer’s official software.

Device Manager makes you identify each device and compare driver versions yourself; Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that shows what it finds, while driver installation is done by the full version. It is optional and does not replace repairing the game files when the game owns fmodstudio64.dll.
Fix 12: Use System Restore after a system-wide change
System Restore is reasonable when the problem began immediately after a driver, application or Windows change and multiple programs are affected.
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the result.
- Select Next.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings and installed programs while normally leaving personal files untouched. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
If only one game is affected, System Restore is usually excessive. Repair or reinstall that game first.
Why regsvr32 will not fix this file
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. FMOD runtime libraries are loaded by the game as native engine libraries, not registered as ordinary COM components.
Do not run:
regsvr32 fmodstudio64.dll
It will normally produce a registration or entry-point error and will not restore a missing dependency. Microsoft documents the command’s intended use in its regsvr32 reference.
The same applies to fmod64.dll. Put the matching files in the application’s own runtime directory through the official repair or deployment process.
Why copying the file into System32 is a bad repair
Application DLLs should normally stay beside the executable that loads them. Copying fmodstudio64.dll into C:\Windows\System32 can create version conflicts and may cause another application to load the wrong build.
It also does not solve missing dependencies. Windows may find the copied Studio library but still fail to locate the matching Core library or Visual C++ runtime.
If you already copied the file manually:
- Remove the copied file from
System32only if you know it was added for this troubleshooting attempt. - Do not remove unrelated Windows files.
- Run the affected launcher’s file verification.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the repaired application.
Microsoft’s DLL redirection guidance explains why application-local DLLs are preferable for private runtime libraries.
Do not download a random standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites are risky because the file may contain malware, belong to a different FMOD release or use the wrong architecture. Even a clean-looking replacement may not fix the real cause if fmod64.dll, a Microsoft runtime or another dependency is missing.
The safe sources are:
- The affected game’s launcher verification system
- The game publisher’s official installer
- The application’s official repair process
- The official FMOD developer distribution for developers
- Microsoft’s official runtime packages when a Microsoft dependency is actually missing
There is no universal fmodstudio64.dll version, size or checksum that applies to every game. A historical file record cannot validate every copy shipped by every application.
Special cases
The file exists but the game still says it is missing
Check these items in order:
- Is the file inside the game’s actual executable directory or expected runtime folder.
- Is the matching
fmod64.dllpresent. - Did Windows Security quarantine another FMOD or runtime file.
- Is the game x64 while the files are x86, or the reverse.
- Did a mod replace one half of the FMOD pair.
- Is the application launching from a different installation than the one you inspected.
- Does the game require a Visual C++ runtime.
Then verify the files again. A visible DLL is not proof that Windows can load it.

Release and logging variants are mixed
FMOD packages can include release and logging variants with names similar to:
Recommended Free Tools
fmodstudio.dll
fmodstudioL.dll
fmodstudio64.dll
fmodstudioL64.dll
Use the variant expected by the wrapper and build configuration. Do not rename a logging library to make it look like a release library.
The error appears after an update
An update may have been interrupted, blocked by antivirus or installed over modified files. Restart Windows, remove incompatible mods, run launcher verification and check Protection History.
If the launcher repeatedly fails to repair the same file, uninstall the affected application and reinstall it from the official source.
Only one game fails
A single-game failure strongly points to that game’s installation, bundled dependencies or mods. Start with verification and reinstall rather than changing Windows system files.

Diagnostic checklist before contacting support
Collect these details:
- The exact game or application name
- Whether it came from Steam, Epic, another launcher or a standalone installer
- The full error message
- Whether the error names
fmodstudio64.dll,fmod64.dll,VCRUNTIME,MSVCPor another file - Whether

- Whether launcher verification found and replaced files
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the issue affects other games
- Whether the application is a custom C# or native project
For a custom project, also record the FMOD API package generation, platform target, output directory and the complete set of native libraries copied during the build.
FAQ
Is fmodstudio64.dll safe?
It is a legitimate FMOD Studio runtime filename used by games and applications. That does not make every file with that name safe. Verify its location and restore it from the official application distribution rather than trusting the filename alone.
Is fmodstudio64.dll a Windows file?
No. It is third-party game middleware and should normally be stored with the game or application that uses it.
Should I download fmodstudio64.dll?
No. Use launcher verification, the application’s official installer or the official FMOD developer package. A standalone download can be malicious, incompatible or incomplete.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Keep application-specific FMOD files with the application. Copying them into System32 can create conflicts and does not restore dependencies.
Why does Windows say the file is missing when I can see it?
The named DLL may depend on another missing DLL, such as fmod64.dll. The process may also be using the wrong architecture, the wrong FMOD build or a different application directory.
Do I need Visual C++ Redistributable?
Only when the error or dependency inspection indicates a missing Microsoft runtime. Repair the game files first for a game-specific failure.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do I need DirectX?
Not for a normal fmodstudio64.dll error. Install legacy DirectX components only when the application separately reports missing DirectX files.
Will regsvr32 fix it?
No. FMOD runtime libraries are not normally registered COM components.
Can I use fmodstudio64.dll from another game?
No. The other game may use a different FMOD API version, Core library, architecture or sound-bank format.
What is the fastest safe fix?
Close the game, run Verify or Repair in its launcher, restart Windows, check Windows Security Protection History and launch the game again. If that fails, reinstall the affected application from its official source.
