If a game ignores a connected external controller and keeps using the ROG Ally’s built-in controls, open Command Center and turn off Embedded Controller. That tells the game to use the external controller instead. It is a targeted fix for that controller-priority problem—not a universal fix for every unresponsive Ally gamepad.
First, identify what is not working
The right next step depends on where input fails. Check whether the built-in controls are unresponsive everywhere, whether buttons or sticks work but behave incorrectly, whether only an external controller is being ignored, or whether the controls work in games but not as a desktop mouse.
- External controller is ignored: try the Embedded Controller setting in Command Center.
- Controls work but are mapped or behaving incorrectly: check Armoury Crate SE’s control mode, game profile, and calibration options.
- Game controls work but desktop navigation does not: check whether Armoury Crate SE is installed.
- Built-in controls do not respond anywhere: the official guidance cited here does not establish one universal recovery procedure; further ASUS support or diagnosis may be needed.
Disable Embedded Controller when an external controller is ignored
ASUS recommends this step for a specific case: an external controller is connected, but a game still defaults to the Ally’s built-in controller. Open Command Center and disable Embedded Controller. This disables the Ally’s built-in controller so the external controller can be used. ASUS says the Ally supports up to four controllers. ASUS ROG Ally Series FAQ
If your problem is that the built-in controller itself is unresponsive in every game or app, this external-controller workaround does not address that symptom.

Check Armoury Crate SE’s control mode and game profile
Armoury Crate SE has separate Gamepad Mode and Desktop Mode controls. Gamepad Mode is for game input; Desktop Mode supports navigating the Windows desktop, including using the gamepad as a mouse. Armoury Crate SE also lets you customize buttons and sticks and use game-level profiles. Calibrate a stick, trigger, or gyro that behaves incorrectly
If a stick, trigger, or gyro responds inaccurately rather than failing completely, check Armoury Crate SE’s calibration options. ASUS lists calibration for the left and right sticks, left and right triggers, and gyro. Calibration is an available adjustment; ASUS does not state that it resolves every unresponsive-controller problem. ASUS Armoury Crate SE introduction

Check for applicable driver or firmware updates
Armoury Crate SE’s Update Center can check whether drivers or firmware need updating. Review the available updates for your device and install applicable ones. An update may be relevant to a control problem, but the ASUS guide does not promise that updating will fix an unresponsive gamepad. ASUS Armoury Crate SE introduction
Restore Desktop Mode if Armoury Crate SE was uninstalled
If you can play games with the controls but cannot use the joystick or buttons to navigate the desktop, Armoury Crate SE may have been removed. ASUS says the app provides gamepad-as-mouse Desktop Mode. Use the touchscreen to download Armoury Crate SE from ASUS product support and reinstall it; ASUS identifies this as the way to restore Desktop Mode functionality after uninstalling the app. This step addresses missing desktop control, not every gamepad failure. If the built-in gamepad still does not respond
The ASUS FAQ and Armoury Crate SE guide cited above do not establish a root cause or a guaranteed fix for a built-in controller that remains unresponsive. They do not distinguish among hardware, Windows, driver, firmware, or other software causes. If the controls fail across games and apps after checking the relevant settings, contact ASUS support or seek further diagnosis rather than assuming a specific component has failed or replacing parts based on this symptom alone.
