Some ROG Ally owners have reported individual games crashing, but the available reports do not show how common the problem is or point to one cause affecting all devices. ASUS says drivers and game settings are among several possible factors. Start by identifying exactly how the game fails, try reversible checks one at a time, and collect system details and Armoury Crate SE logs if you need support.
What the crash reports do—and do not—show
In an August 2024 ASUS ROG Forum thread, an Ally X owner described crashes in Horizon: Zero Dawn and provided details about the device’s BIOS, Windows, and drivers. An ASUS Customer Service Agent replied that “there could be many factors affecting it (drivers, game settings)” and requested further information. This is an example involving a particular game and configuration, not evidence that every Ally model is affected or that the device has a widespread defect. The public reports cited here do not establish a crash rate.
The game name alone cannot identify the cause. A game closing to desktop calls for a different investigation than a handheld that freezes, shows a black screen, or restarts. Record which happens and whether the failure began after a game update, Windows or driver update, or settings change.
Record the failure before changing settings
Write down what happens and the conditions in which it happens. ASUS support asks for system and game details, including connected devices and power or fan conditions. A useful record includes:

Try reversible checks one at a time
Note the current versions and settings first. Then test a single change and repeat the same scenario; otherwise, it is difficult to tell what helped. These are general PC troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes for ROG Ally crashes.
- Check Windows and the ASUS support resources for your exact model for applicable updates. Confirm the game and its launcher are current as well.
- If the launcher provides a file-verification option, use it to check the game installation.
- If the game fails to launch, test the graphics-memory setting documented by ASUS: in Armoury Crate SE, select Auto or 8 GB, restart the Ally, then try launching the game again. Menu wording can vary by software revision. This is a test, not a guaranteed fix.
- Repeat the same steps that triggered the crash, changing no other setting during that test. Record the result before trying another change.
ASUS documents the graphics-memory option in its ROG Ally Series FAQ, last updated June 3, 2026. The FAQ describes a device setting; it does not establish that changing it resolves every game crash.

Collect Armoury Crate SE logs for support
If the crash persists, gather the record above along with the game version, crash time, and any error message. ASUS’s customer-service agent in the Ally X forum thread instructed the user to “enable the log recording feature in Armoury Crate SE before starting the game” and provide the resulting log after the crash for analysis. Enable logging before reproducing the failure, then include the log when contacting ASUS. The forum instruction is support guidance in that particular exchange, not a formal diagnostic bulletin.

Contact ASUS support if crashes continue after basic checks, affect multiple games, happen outside games, or include repeated black screens or whole-device restarts. Provide the exact model, system versions, reproduction steps, and logs rather than repeatedly changing drivers or firmware without a recovery plan.

Use the ASUS support page for your exact ROG Ally model to find current model-specific resources, including BIOS-update and Cloud Recovery material. Follow the current instructions for that model before changing firmware or recovering Windows, and back up important files before recovery because it may affect stored data.
In a March 2024 ROG Forum exchange about a different Ally crash case, an ASUS agent suggested Cloud Recovery and recommended an authorized repair center if recovery could not be performed. That is an example of case-specific support advice, not a warranty determination or a promise that the same steps apply to every owner. Service availability and warranty terms depend on region and purchase details.
