Which ROG Ally and which Nintendo Switch?
ROG Ally Z1 and Z1 Extreme
The 2023 Ally came in two materially different processor configurations. The entry-level Ryzen Z1 has six CPU cores, 12 threads and four RDNA 3 graphics compute units, with up to 2.8 teraflops listed by ASUS. The Z1 Extreme has eight cores, 16 threads and 12 graphics compute units, with up to 8.6 teraflops. Both have a stated 9–30W configurable power range, but the Z1 should not be treated as equivalent to the Z1 Extreme for demanding games. See ASUS’s processor comparison.

ROG Ally X
Ally X is a revised, higher-battery member of the Ally family, with more memory and storage and revised ergonomics. It is not the same device as the 2023 Ally, and an Ally X battery comparison should not be used to describe the original model. ASUS lists current family members on its ROG Ally product page.
Original Switch and Switch OLED
These are earlier-generation options for Nintendo’s established library, not current performance peers to Switch 2. The OLED model improves the handheld display, but retains the original Switch platform’s core performance. The original Switch has 32GB internal storage and uses ordinary microSD cards; Switch OLED does not gain a performance upgrade. Consider either primarily when its lower price or the existing Switch library matters more than Switch 2-specific games.
Switch 2
Released June 5, 2025, Switch 2 is the current Nintendo comparison here. It has a larger 7.9-inch screen, 256GB internal storage, detachable Joy-Con 2 controllers and an included TV dock. Many original Switch games are compatible, but compatibility and any enhancements are title-specific rather than guaranteed for every game.
What you can play on each device
ROG Ally: a broad Windows PC library
The Ally runs Windows 11 Home and can access PC games through Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox PC Game Pass and other Windows launchers, including GOG, EA App, Ubisoft Connect and Battle.net. ASUS describes the device’s PC storefront support in its Ally announcement. Existing game ownership can make the Ally especially appealing: a Steam library you already own is part of its value.

Windows access is broad, not universal. A game can be a poor fit or unavailable because of hardware requirements, anti-cheat restrictions, launcher behavior or weak controller support. Some titles need graphics-setting changes, and separate launchers can mean extra logins and updates. The Ally can also run desktop software, use mods and community patches, and access cloud gaming through supported apps or a browser.
Switch 2: Nintendo games and a curated console library
Switch 2 is the pick for Nintendo franchises and Nintendo’s handheld-to-TV ecosystem. It also supports Switch 2-native releases, selected third-party games, and many original Switch titles. Do not assume an older game automatically receives a Switch 2 upgrade: compatibility and enhancements depend on the specific title. Check Nintendo’s title-specific compatibility guidance when a particular game is essential.
The Ally does not officially substitute for Nintendo’s exclusive library. Conversely, Switch 2 does not provide native access to Steam, PC Game Pass or Windows-only games. If your must-play list is mostly on one platform, that library matters more than a broad count of games.
Performance and screen quality
The Z1 Extreme Ally offers configurable PC performance: ASUS specifies a 9–30W power range and 12 RDNA 3 graphics compute units. That gives it more user-adjustable headroom than the original Switch, whose hardware is much older. Switch 2 is a closer comparison: it uses a newer custom NVIDIA platform with features including DLSS and ray tracing, but those features alone do not establish that it is faster than the Ally in every game.

- ALL YOUR GAMES, ALL YOUR PROGRESS Powered by Windows 11, the ROG Xbox Ally gives you access to your full library of PC games from Xbox and other game stores. With Xbox Play Anywhere, you can pick up right where you left off on your PC or Xbox and jump back into the game anytime.

- GAME-READY STORAGE AND FAST MEMORY Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.
Cross-platform performance depends on the specific game, patch, resolution, image-quality settings, upscaling and frame-rate target. The Ally lets you tune settings, but that flexibility can require trial and error; Switch 2’s fixed hardware allows developers to target a consistent platform. Avoid treating teraflops or a single game result as a universal verdict.
| Display feature | ROG Ally (2023) | Switch 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Panel size and resolution | 7 inches, 1920×1080 | 7.9 inches, 1920×1080 |
| Refresh rate | Up to 120Hz | Up to 120Hz |
| Additional display feature | 500-nit brightness; FreeSync Premium VRR | HDR10 support |
| TV output | Via compatible USB-C dock or adapter | Up to 4K through included dock, subject to game and display support |
The Ally’s screen specification is published by ASUS; Switch 2 comparison details are summarized by Windows Central. Switch 2 offers the larger screen and HDR; the Ally combines 1080p, 120Hz and VRR. Neither panel in this comparison is OLED. The original Switch OLED has an OLED screen, but not a performance advantage over the standard Switch.
Price and the cost beyond the console
As of August 16, 2026, Nintendo’s U.S. Switch 2 MSRP is $449.99 through August 31; Nintendo has announced $499.99 beginning September 1. Check the date when comparing listings. Windows Central’s comparison listed approximately $499.99 for the original Ally Z1 and $649.99 for Z1 Extreme; those are market price signals, not guaranteed permanent ASUS prices. Condition, retailer and promotions can change the gap.
Neither platform is universally cheaper to own. On Ally, factor in a compatible dock if TV play matters, potential SSD or storage expansion, and any Game Pass subscription you choose. On Switch 2, consider a microSD Express card if its 256GB is insufficient, Nintendo Switch Online if you want its online features, and additional controllers for multiplayer. First-party Nintendo games can retain value, while PC games are often discounted; your existing library and buying habits determine which costs less.

- Do not compare an Ally X’s battery or features with the original Ally’s price, or compare MSRP with a temporary sale price.
- For Switch 2, buy a compatible microSD Express card—not an ordinary microSD card intended for the original Switch.
- For Ally TV play, verify a dock’s USB-C Power Delivery and display-output specifications rather than assuming every hub will suit the handheld.
Battery, portability and comfort
Battery life depends on the game, brightness, resolution, frame-rate cap, wireless use and power mode. The original Ally has a 40Wh battery; demanding games at higher power draw can drain it quickly, so a 25–30W setting is a poor choice when endurance is the priority. Nintendo gives Switch 2 an estimated range of approximately two to 6.5 hours depending on use. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed runtime for every game. Windows Central’s comparison discusses Ally and Ally X battery testing, but results depend on test workload and settings.
For longer sessions within the ASUS family, Ally X is the more relevant model because it has a substantially larger battery than the original Ally. A USB-C power bank can extend play, but check its USB Power Delivery capability and output requirements before buying. The Ally’s integrated controls favor solo play and cannot be detached; Switch 2’s Joy-Con 2 can detach, and its kickstand supports tabletop play. Hand size and grip comfort vary, so consider a grip or controller for long sessions on either device.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Controls, docking and multiplayer
Switch 2 is the stronger ready-to-play choice for families, parties and shared-screen sessions. Its included dock supports TV play, and the detachable Joy-Con 2 controllers can be used separately in supported games. A grip accessory brings them together into a more conventional controller. The same unit can move between handheld, tabletop and TV play.
The Ally is better suited to a player who wants configurable controls, Windows peripherals or a PC-style dock setup. Its built-in controls and rear macro buttons are integrated into the handheld; a compatible USB-C dock or hub is needed for a monitor or TV, and an external controller may be useful for multiplayer. That flexibility comes with accessory and setup decisions that Switch 2 largely avoids.

Which one should you buy?
Choose the ROG Ally Z1 Extreme if you own PC games
It is the better match for a Steam or other Windows game library, PC Game Pass, mods, launcher choice and adjustable graphics settings. Make sure you are buying the Z1 Extreme if you expect performance associated with the top 2023 Ally configuration; the cheaper Z1 has substantially fewer graphics compute units.
Choose Switch 2 if Nintendo games are the point
Buy Switch 2 for Nintendo exclusives, local multiplayer, detachable controls and an easier console routine. Its included dock and larger screen make it the more complete out-of-box handheld-and-TV package. Check compatibility for any original Switch game you need to carry forward.
Choose Ally X if you want a Windows handheld but battery matters
Ally X addresses the original Ally’s endurance trade-off with a larger battery and other hardware changes. Compare its current price against the specific Switch 2 bundle or Ally configuration available to you; an Ally X is not a like-for-like price comparison with a discounted 2023 Ally.
Choose an older Switch only for a clear price or library reason
Original Switch or Switch OLED can make sense at a substantial discount if you mainly want the existing library. Switch OLED is a screen upgrade, not a performance upgrade. For a new purchase, it is a legacy-library or budget option rather than the direct current-generation rival to the Ally.
Choose based on the inconvenience you tolerate
With the Ally, the trade is Windows maintenance, launcher management and per-game tweaking for a wider PC ecosystem. With Switch 2, the trade is a more closed library and storage requirement for a simpler, more consistent console experience. Pick the device whose compromises will bother you less.
Storage: avoid the Switch 2 card mistake
The 2023 Ally’s standard configuration includes a 512GB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 2230 SSD, plus microSD support; its SSD can be replaced with a compatible larger drive. Nintendo Switch 2 has 256GB internal storage and requires microSD Express for expansion. An ordinary microSD card should not be treated as an interchangeable Switch 2 expansion card. Nintendo’s support page explains compatibility distinctions.
Other handhelds to consider
If neither profile fits, Ally X is the closer ASUS option for better battery life. Steam Deck OLED offers a more console-like PC handheld experience, while Lenovo Legion Go emphasizes a larger screen and detachable controllers. Prices and availability change; compare current models and configurations rather than assuming an older review’s price still applies.
