ASUS ROG Phone 6 Performance Review: A Gaming Phone with Real Trade-Offs

The ROG Phone 6 pairs a fast Snapdragon chip and 165 Hz screen with gaming controls and a large battery, but game support, warmth, size and camera trade-offs count.

The ASUS ROG Phone 6 was built around gaming: a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, a 165 Hz AMOLED screen, AirTrigger controls and a 6,000 mAh battery. It delivered strong performance in 2022 reviews, but its 165 Hz panel did not make every game run at 165 frames per second, and sustained play could make the phone warm. Its size and camera compromises also matter if you want one device for more than gaming.

What the ROG Phone 6 offers gamers

ASUS announced the ROG Phone 6 series on 5 July 2022. Its official specifications pair a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 clocked up to 3.2 GHz with a 6.78-inch AMOLED display, rated for up to 165 Hz refresh and 720 Hz touch sampling. Those figures describe the hardware’s maximum capabilities, not a promise that each game will use them. ASUS ROG Phone 6 specifications | ASUS’s 5 July 2022 launch announcement.

For control and tuning, the phone includes AirTrigger 6 shoulder controls and Armoury Crate, where users can adjust gaming-related settings such as touch sensitivity and performance modes. ASUS describes GameCool 6 as a three-part thermal system that includes boron nitride thermal compound; that is the manufacturer’s design description, not a guarantee of a particular temperature in every game or environment.

ASUS lists up to 18 GB of LPDDR5 memory and up to 512 GB of UFS 3.1 storage for the product family. HotHardware distinguishes the standard ROG Phone 6, with up to 16 GB RAM, from the Pro, with up to 18 GB; both are listed with up to 512 GB storage. Check the exact model and regional SKU rather than assuming the family’s maximum RAM applies to every Phone 6.

How fast did it perform in reviews?

Benchmark gains were measured on the Pro

HotHardware’s hands-on preview tested a ROG Phone 6 Pro, not the standard Phone 6. In the outlet’s selected 2022 benchmarks, the Pro scored nearly 22% above the ROG Phone 5 in 3DMark Sling Shot Extreme, 55.3% higher in GFXBench T-Rex and 49% faster in GFXBench Manhattan. These are comparisons in those specific tests; they are not gaming frame-rate gains, present-day comparisons or results for every Phone 6 configuration. HotHardware also described its broader benchmark picture as close to a Qualcomm reference Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 device in several tests. HotHardware’s ROG Phone 6 Pro hands-on.

A 165 Hz screen is not a 165 fps guarantee

The display can refresh up to 165 times per second, but a game must support a corresponding frame-rate mode for players to see that rate. In its review, Gadgets 360 said most popular games it tried ran at around 120 fps and that it rarely encountered titles above 144 fps. That is one reviewer’s experience with the games it tested, not a complete compatibility list or a universal limit. Gadgets 360’s India-market review.

  • 【Camera and Screen Protection】Raised screen edges and camera lips bring your ROG Phone 6 and ROG 6 Pro under sound protection against accidental drop.

That distinction matters when judging the screen: 165 Hz can benefit supported content and contributes to the phone’s gaming-focused specification, while the actual rate in a given game depends on that title’s support and settings. A high refresh-rate panel alone cannot unlock a frame-rate option the game does not provide.

Heat and sustained gaming

Performance and comfort depend on the game, graphics settings, session length, surroundings and whether an accessory cooler is used. TechRadar reported that its unit reached about 40°C after 20 minutes of gaming and about 42°C after a 13 GB 5G download. In a separate test, half an hour of Genshin Impact at maximum graphics settings left the areas held by the reviewer’s hands noticeably warm. Gadgets 360 likewise observed warmth under load and said heat spread across the back. These observations describe the reviewers’ units and conditions, not a temperature prediction for every owner. When comparing gaming phones for long sessions, use like-for-like evidence: the same game and graphics preset, similar session duration and room conditions, and the same cooling-accessory setup. Benchmark scores from different tests cannot establish which phone will feel cooler or sustain a particular game’s performance for longer.

Battery, charging and audio

ASUS specifies a 6,000 mAh battery. In Gadgets 360’s India-market review, the tested unit lasted 17 hours and 41 minutes in that outlet’s HD video-loop test with the display set to 165 Hz. That is a controlled video test, not an estimate of gaming time or a guarantee of everyday battery life.

The same India review says the phone supported 65 W charging but shipped with a 30 W adapter in that market. Package contents can vary by region or listing, so verify what is included with the specific unit being considered. ASUS also specifies dual front-facing stereo speakers; Gadgets 360 praised the sound and noted a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Size, cameras and accessories

The 6.78-inch screen and gaming-oriented design make this a large phone. HotHardware called it large, a practical consideration for carrying it and playing one-handed. Camera use is another compromise to weigh separately from gaming performance: TechRadar noted that the camera lenses lack optical image stabilization.

ASUS announced the AeroActive Cooler 6 as part of the ROG Phone 6 accessory ecosystem. It is an optional accessory, not a substitute for checking the exact fit: confirm that any cooler listing explicitly supports the precise Phone 6 model and regional version you have. Availability, current pricing, used or refurbished condition, software-update status and present stock are not established here, so verify those details with the seller or manufacturer before buying.

Who should consider the ROG Phone 6?

  • It may suit you if gaming controls, performance tuning, a high-refresh display, front-facing stereo audio and a large battery are priorities.
  • Look beyond it if compact handling, stabilized camera photography or consistent access to the highest frame-rate mode in every game matters more.
  • Compare carefully by testing the same games and settings, checking the precise RAM and storage SKU, and confirming accessory compatibility and the charger included in your market.

HotHardware’s favorable overall assessment belongs to its review of the Pro, while the frame-rate and thermal observations above come from separate outlets and test conditions. Together, they show the Phone 6’s strengths as a purpose-built gaming handset without implying that every model, game or session produces the same result.
