Choose a single-player pirate game for a self-paced, character-led adventure; choose multiplayer for shared voyages, crew play and unpredictable encounters with other players. The key distinction is not simply whether you can sail alone: Skull and Bones, for example, supports solo contracts but is still an online multiplayer game that requires an internet connection.
What kind of pirate adventure do you want?
Think about what you want to do when you set sail. A defined protagonist and a story you can follow at your own pace point toward single-player. Sharing a ship, dividing crew tasks and creating unscripted stories with friends point toward multiplayer.
- Choose single-player if you want a central character, freedom to play on your own schedule and no need to coordinate with a crew.
- Choose multiplayer if the social side—exploring together, cooperating in combat or encountering other players—is part of the appeal.
These are different kinds of fun, not an objective ranking. Before choosing a multiplayer game, check its internet requirement, PvP rules, cross-play support and any platform subscription requirements that apply to you.
Single-player: a focused story and freedom to play at your pace
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is described by game director Richard Knight as a solo, character-driven adventure focused on Edward’s story. In PC Gamer’s report, Knight said: “This remains a solo adventure and character-driven experience. It is not an RPG. The focus stays on how you play and how you explore the world.” The report also says the game does not include multiplayer elements from the original, while the original Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remains available for purchase.

- Engage in thrilling naval battles and equip a multitude of powerful weapons as you risk it all for the biggest loot.
- Sail the lawless seas solo, or team up with two friends or other players to partake in shareable contracts and rewards.
- Face cutthroat pirate hunters, deadly sea monsters, unpredictable weather, dangerous rogue waves, supernatural threats, and more as you explore a vast open world.
- Craft and sail up to 10 different ships at launch, each with unique perks to match your own personal playstyle.
- Grow your infamy and unlock resources and opportunities to get riskier contracts and upgrade your equipment.
This is the closer fit if Edward’s character-led adventure matters more to you than sailing with friends. It also makes the choice simpler: the Resynced version is presented as a solo experience, not a shared-world pirate game.
Multiplayer: crew up, cooperate or meet other players
Sea of Thieves
Sea of Thieves is a shared-world sailing adventure where players can crew up with others across platforms. Its official buy page lists online multiplayer. That makes it the clearest match here for players who want a social sandbox: the appeal is sailing and taking on adventures as a crew, with room for encounters that unfold differently from voyage to voyage.

Skull and Bones
Skull and Bones is centered on naval combat, ship customization, seasonal progression and large shared-world events. Ubisoft describes a shared world with up to 20 players, as well as cross-play and cross-progression. Its parent guide says players can choose whether to enable PvP; PlayStation describes sailing alone or teaming up with two friends. Check the game’s current settings and platform details if avoiding PvP or playing with friends on other systems is important to you.
Playing a contract alone does not make Skull and Bones an offline single-player game. Ubisoft says an internet connection is required and lists console subscription requirements in its parent guide. Those requirements and availability can vary by platform and region, so confirm the current details before buying. Ubisoft also describes a free trial on Steam, Ubisoft Connect, Epic Games Store, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; check the relevant storefront for current terms.

A quick decision checklist
- Pick single-player if you want the story and protagonist to carry the adventure, and you want to play without arranging a session with friends.
- Pick multiplayer if sharing exploration, coordinating a crew or reacting to other players sounds like the main attraction.
- Check the practical details for any multiplayer game: internet access, PvP settings, cross-play, platform subscriptions and current trial or storefront availability.
If you are coming from Black Flag specifically, decide whether you want another character-led adventure or a different experience built around a shared pirate world. A player’s question on Reddit, “Are there any good pirate games like Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag?”, illustrates one way people use the game as a reference point, but it is an individual example rather than evidence of a broader trend: the Reddit post.
