Hytale has two different animal interactions: capture an NPC with a Capture Crate, or tame some friendly animals by holding their favorite food. The official notes confirm both features, but do not provide a verified crate recipe, use controls, or a complete list of eligible animals and foods. Because Hytale’s creature systems were still being developed in July 2026, check the instructions shown in your current game version before relying on a particular procedure.
Capture and taming are different systems
| Action | What the official notes establish | What they do not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Capture | Update 5 refers to capturing an NPC with a Capture Crate. After capture, the crate’s inventory model icon reflects the captured NPC. | The notes do not specify how to craft or use the crate, its range, which NPCs qualify, or how to release a captured NPC. |
| Tame | Update 3 introduced an early taming feature: some friendly animals can be tamed when you have their favorite food in hand. | The notes do not give a definitive species or favorite-food list, or a complete interaction sequence. |
These details come from Hytale Team’s Update 5 patch notes and Update 3 patch notes. The capture-icon change confirms that the crate stores information about the captured NPC; it is not a full guide to operating the item.
How to tame a friendly animal
Update 3, published February 17, 2026, describes taming as an early feature. Its guidance is to have the animal’s favorite food in hand. It applies to “some” friendly animals, so it does not establish that every animal can be tamed or that one food works on all species.
- Find a friendly animal that appears eligible for taming.
- Hold the food that animal favors. Hytale’s notes do not provide a complete food-to-species list.
- Follow the interaction indicated by your current game build. The official notes do not specify a button press or other exact input, so avoid relying on an unverified key or click sequence.
Once tamed, animals can be petted with an empty hand and fed occasionally, according to Update 3. The notes also say that some tamed animals can be milked, sheared, or mounted. They say tamed animals will not run away unless hit and may greet players; these behaviors are not a guarantee that every tame animal offers every listed interaction.

How to capture an NPC with a Capture Crate
Update 5, published May 26, 2026, confirms the Capture Crate as an in-game capture item. It says capturing an NPC with one updates the crate’s model icon in the inventory to show the captured NPC. That is the extent of the documented procedure in the cited notes.
The notes do not state the crate’s crafting recipe, controls, capture range, eligible species, or how to release a captured NPC. Check the item description and current in-game guidance rather than assuming a recipe or control scheme from another version.

Why instructions may change between versions
In its July 2026 Chapter 1 preview, Hytale said it was updating animal models and behaviors and planned to expand taming and homesteading. That is a development intention, not a finalized specification, but it is a reason to treat older instructions as version-specific. The official sources cited here confirm the features, not every practical detail needed for a universal step-by-step guide.
