Its 175 W GeForce RTX 4080, Core i9-13980HX and 2560×1600 240 Hz display deliver excellent plugged-in gaming performance, sometimes approaching RTX 4090 laptop territory. The compromises are its plastic-heavy chassis, weak webcam, noticeable coil whine, left-heavy port layout and slower-than-advertised display response times.
Notebookcheck rated the tested configuration 88.4%. That result still makes the G614JZ interesting, but it is now historical evidence of a strong 2023 laptop rather than automatic 2026 buying advice. Compare its actual used, refurbished or old-stock price with newer G614 models before purchasing.

Why the RTX 4080 is the star
Laptop GPU names do not tell the whole performance story. Power limits, cooling, CPU limits, Advanced Optimus or MUX behavior and chassis design all matter. This G16’s RTX 4080 can use up to 175 W, which is central to its strong results.
In Notebookcheck’s 3DMark Time Spy graphics test, the G16 scored 19,157. The reviewed ROG Strix Scar 18 with an RTX 4090 scored 21,167, putting this smaller G16 at roughly 91% of that specific system’s result. That is not proof that every RTX 4080 laptop matches an RTX 4090, but it shows why a high-power RTX 4080 can be a practical performance sweet spot.
The RTX 4080 also has 12 GB of VRAM, compared with the 8 GB commonly specified for the 2023 Strix G16 RTX 4070 configurations. That extra capacity is useful for demanding games, ray tracing and longer-term 1600p settings headroom.

Gaming performance
At its native 2560×1600 resolution, the G16 can run many games above 60 fps at maximum settings, although demanding modern titles will vary and a 240 Hz panel does not mean every game will reach 240 fps.
| Test | Result | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| F1 22, 1080p High | 263 fps | Excellent performance in a well-optimized competitive-style workload |
| Ray-tracing test | Approximately 72 fps | Playable RT performance, with DLSS and game optimization still important |
| 3DMark Time Spy graphics | 19,157 | Strong result for a 16-inch RTX 4080 laptop |
The 240 Hz refresh rate is most valuable in esports games, older titles and reduced settings. For demanding ray-traced games, the sensible target is high-quality 1600p gaming rather than a guaranteed 240 fps.
Cooling, modes and noise
The G16 uses a substantial three-fan cooling system and liquid-metal thermal interface material. In Turbo-oriented testing, the GPU could sustain roughly 170 W, while combined CPU and GPU power reached approximately 210 W in a Prime95 plus FurMark stress scenario. CPU power could reach about 130 W for sustained periods.
Armoury Crate modes materially change the experience:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Silent: About 40 dB(A) in the cited testing, with combined stress-test power reduced to roughly 95 W. Gaming remained viable, and F1 22 could lose only around 30 fps compared with faster modes in some tests.
- Turbo: About 51 dB(A), with substantially higher power and performance.
- Performance and Manual: Useful intermediate or configurable choices, but results depend on firmware, fan curves and workload.
Turbo is not merely “11 points louder” than Silent: decibels are logarithmic, so the difference is substantial. The review also found significant coil whine, particularly when reduced fan noise made electrical noise easier to hear. Coil whine varies by unit and workload.
Display: excellent format, qualified motion performance
The 16-inch 16:10 IPS panel combines 2560×1600 resolution with a 240 Hz refresh rate. It has strong DisplayP3 coverage, a matte surface and no obvious backlight-bleeding problems on the tested sample.
However, the advertised 3 ms response time was not consistently achieved. Some measured transitions were approximately twice as slow, which can produce ghosting even while the screen is running at 240 Hz. Brightness was also below ASUS’s advertised 500 cd/m2 figure in testing. Panel suppliers may differ between retail units, so verify the exact panel where possible.
Build quality, keyboard and webcam
The G16 looks unmistakably like a gaming laptop, with an RGB light strip, RGB keyboard, aggressive lettering and sculpted gray surfaces. Its one-hand hinge opens to roughly 130 degrees, and the 16-inch chassis was considered more stable than the larger 18-inch Strix counterpart.
It is structurally adequate, but not especially premium. Apart from the lid, much of the chassis is plastic, and Notebookcheck criticized visible gaps and the webcam’s protruding, add-on appearance. The webcam is only a 0.9 MP HD-class camera and performs poorly in low light. The keyboard is well suited to gaming, while the large clickpad is functional rather than a standout feature. The review was more positive about the speakers.
Ports and connectivity
The laptop includes:
- Two USB-A ports
- Thunderbolt 4 USB-C with DisplayPort
- A second USB-C port with DisplayPort and USB-C Power Delivery
- HDMI 2.1
- RJ-45 2.5 GbE Ethernet
- 3.5 mm headset jack
- Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2
Most connectors sit on the left, while the right side has only two USB ports. That arrangement can create cable clutter beside a right-handed mouse. USB-C Power Delivery is useful for light work and travel, but the system can draw up to 100 W through USB-C, which is not enough for maximum CPU/GPU performance. Full-power gaming requires the included barrel-style adapter.
Battery life and portability
The 90 Wh battery is large for a gaming laptop. With graphics switching active, Notebookcheck recorded approximately 9 hours 43 minutes in its Wi-Fi web-surfing test. Runtime fell sharply when the RTX 4080 remained active and could reach roughly an hour under some high-load scenarios.
This is respectable light-use endurance for a 2023 gaming laptop, not long-running unplugged gaming. For both performance and battery life, serious gaming should be done on AC power. The travel burden is also greater than the 2.382 kg laptop weight suggests: the adapter adds about 966 g, for a combined carry weight of roughly 3.35 kg.
Upgradeability and productivity
The G16 is suitable for video editing, 3D rendering, software development, streaming and other GPU-accelerated work. The Core i9-13980HX and RTX 4080 provide substantial capacity, although sustained workloads will be noisy and battery life will be poor.
ASUS’s 2023 material identifies support for up to 32 GB of DDR5 memory and PCIe 4.0 SSD storage. The reviewed machine had 16 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD. Confirm whether a particular retail unit has an open memory slot or second M.2 slot, and consult the service manual before buying parts. Memory speed, occupied slots and upgrade limits can vary by SKU. Disassembly and warranty rules also differ by region.
Notebookcheck found that the tested system lagged some similarly equipped competitors in certain PCMark productivity subsections, partly because of RAM and SSD performance. That does not undermine its overall high performance, but it is another reason not to assume every G614JZ configuration is identical.
How it compares
RTX 4070 Strix G16
The RTX 4070 version is the value alternative. It can be strong for esports and adjusted-settings 1600p gaming, but it has less GPU performance and typically 8 GB of VRAM in the 2023 family. Choose it when the price difference is substantial and maximum ray tracing or long-term VRAM headroom is not a priority.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →RTX 4090 laptops
An RTX 4090 remains faster and generally offers more VRAM. It is easier to justify for maximum ray tracing, high-refresh 1600p gaming, heavy GPU rendering or a long ownership period. The G16’s results show that the practical gap can be smaller than the price and size difference in selected workloads.
Lenovo Legion Pro 7
The Legion Pro 7 occupied a similar performance tier in Notebookcheck’s comparison. Its more restrained styling and potentially stronger perceived construction may appeal to professionals, while the G16 offers a high-power GPU, 16:10 display and useful Silent-mode performance. Compare exact generations and GPU power limits.
Razer Blade 16
The Blade 16 is the more premium-style competitor, with stronger materials and a more refined chassis positioning. The G16 makes more sense when it is meaningfully cheaper and performance matters more than finish, webcam quality and portability.
Newer G614 generations
Do not confuse this G614JZ review with later G614 models. ASUS lists a 2024 G16 option with a Core i9-14900HX and RTX 4080, while later family pages may use different CPUs, GPUs, panels and prices. The 2024 product page is the appropriate starting point for identifying that generation.
2026 buying advice
ASUS’s support pages may show a price signal around $1,799.99 alongside a “Notify Me” state, but that does not confirm active RTX 4080 stock. The original review’s approximately $3,000 launch expectation is also historical, not a current valuation.
Consider the G614JZ only if:
- Its actual used, refurbished or old-stock price is clearly below newer RTX 4080 laptops.
- You want high-power 1600p gaming and accept a large adapter.
- You value expandable storage and memory.
- You can tolerate plastic-heavy construction, a basic webcam and possible coil whine.
Prefer a newer system when the price gap is modest and warranty, firmware support, battery condition or platform age matter. Avoid it if you need premium materials, a quiet full-power machine, clean right-side connectivity, a high-quality webcam or genuine 3 ms-class motion clarity.
Final verdict
The Asus ROG Strix G16 G614JZ earned its reputation: a full-power RTX 4080 in a manageable 16-inch chassis delivers unusually strong 1600p gaming and comes surprisingly close to larger RTX 4090 systems in selected tests. Its ability to keep games playable in Silent mode is a particularly valuable finding.
It is not a premium laptop. The chassis finish, webcam, display response behavior, coil whine and travel weight all require acceptance. As a 2023 machine, it should now be judged by its discount rather than its launch price. At the right price, it remains an excellent plugged-in gaming and creation laptop; near the cost of a newer RTX 4080 model, its compromises are harder to justify.
