Verdict: The ASUS ROG Strix G16 is an excellent plugged-in gaming laptop when equipped with the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D, RTX 5070 Ti, 32GB of RAM, and the 2560×1600 240Hz display. It delivers strong 1080p and 1600p gaming, exceptional CPU performance, useful memory and storage upgrades, and effective cooling. Its drawbacks are short battery life, audible and sometimes hot operation, mediocre speakers and webcam, substantial weight, and confusing model variation.
That last point matters most. “ROG Strix G16” describes several laptops, not one fixed configuration. Check the model code, GPU wattage, display, RAM, and storage before buying.

Which ROG Strix G16 is this review about?
The independently tested system discussed here is the 2025 ASUS ROG Strix G16 G614 with an AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX3D processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU, 32GB of DDR5-5600 memory, a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD, and a 16-inch 2560×1600 240Hz display. Tom’s Hardware listed that configuration at a $2,499.99 MSRP and showed an observed ASUS price of $1,799.99, but those were tied to the review configuration and are not guaranteed current prices. Tom’s Hardware’s review provides the independent test results below.

Lower-priced G16 models can instead use a Ryzen 9 8940HX or RTX 5070, 16GB of RAM, and a 165Hz FHD+ display. Those are not equivalent to the tested machine, even if the chassis looks nearly identical.
Gaming performance: excellent, but not unlimited
The RTX 5070 Ti configuration is best understood as a strong high-refresh 1080p machine and a capable 2560×1600 system. It is not a guarantee of 240 frames per second at native resolution in every modern game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTom’s Hardware recorded these results for the review unit:
| Game | 1080p | 2560×1600 |
|---|---|---|
| Shadow of the Tomb Raider | 151 fps | 92 fps |
| Cyberpunk 2077, Ultra ray tracing | 54 fps | 29 fps |
| Far Cry 6 | 143 fps | 102 fps |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 70 fps | 52 fps |
| Borderlands 3 | 143 fps | 97 fps |
In a gameplay session, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle ran at roughly 100 fps at native 2560×1600 with Ultra settings. The results show why the display and GPU should be considered together: ordinary rasterized games can run very well at 1600p, while demanding ray-traced titles may need DLSS, frame generation, lower settings, or a move to 1080p.
The RTX 5070 Ti is a better match for the 240Hz 1600p panel than a lower-tier GPU, particularly because the tested version has 12GB of VRAM. An RTX 5070 G16 can still be sensible at the right price, especially for esports and 1080p gaming, but check its VRAM, power limit, and panel. An RTX 5080 G615 provides more performance and headroom for native-resolution gaming, but the higher price is difficult to justify if you mainly play competitive games.
Do not compare laptop GPU names directly with desktop cards. Laptop performance varies with wattage, cooling, firmware, CPU, memory, and the individual game. ASUS lists up to a 175W TGP for some RTX 5080 Strix configurations, while the tested G614’s RTX 5070 Ti used 115W plus 25W Dynamic Boost. Those are materially different power envelopes.
The Ryzen 9 9955HX3D is a major strength
The AMD processor makes the tested G614 particularly attractive for CPU-heavy work. Tom’s Hardware recorded a Geekbench 6 single-core score of 3,205 and a multi-core score of 20,113. It completed a 4K-to-1080p HandBrake conversion in 2 minutes 14 seconds and achieved a 1,903.64 MB/s result in a 25GB mixed-media transfer test.
That performance benefits compiling, video encoding, rendering, heavy multitasking, and CPU-limited games. The important qualification is that a fast processor cannot overcome a GPU limitation. In visually demanding games, the RTX 5070 Ti—not the X3D CPU—usually determines the ceiling.
The Intel-based G615 is worth considering when the complete configuration gives you an RTX 5080, newer chassis features, or connectivity you specifically need. Compare the whole laptop rather than choosing solely by the Ryzen 9 or Core Ultra 9 name.
A strong 240Hz display, with one important catch
The tested panel is one of the G16’s best features. It combines a 16:10 aspect ratio, 2560×1600 resolution, and 240Hz refresh rate. Tom’s Hardware measured approximately 449.4 nits of brightness, 112.5% sRGB volume, and 79.7% DCI-P3 volume.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That makes it bright, smooth, and well suited to gaming, general productivity, and many creative tasks. It is not a perfect professional color-grading display based on the measured DCI-P3 coverage, however. Creators who require tightly managed wide-gamut color should use a properly calibrated reference display.
The bigger buying risk is panel variation. Some G16 listings use a cheaper 165Hz FHD+ or 1920×1200 display instead. Before purchasing, confirm:
- Resolution and aspect ratio
- Refresh rate
- Brightness rating
- Color-gamut claim
- Response-time specification
- G-SYNC and Advanced Optimus support
A 240Hz panel is valuable for competitive games and smooth desktop motion. It is less meaningful in demanding AAA games that run at 50–100 fps at native 1600p.
Cooling is effective, but the laptop is not cool or silent
The 2025 G614 uses a three-fan cooling design. In Tom’s Hardware’s Metro Exodus stress test, the CPU package averaged 73.8°C and the GPU averaged 78.7°C. The keyboard reached 92.8°F, while the hottest measured area reached 127°F.

These figures describe different parts of the machine: the palm rest and touchpad can remain comfortable while areas near the function keys, exhaust, or underside become very hot. Fan noise is noticeable under sustained load, although the reviewer did not find it immersion-breaking.
Use the G16 on a hard, unobstructed surface. A bed or soft couch can restrict airflow and increase temperatures. This is a powerful desktop-replacement-style laptop, not a silent thin-and-light system.
Large, sturdy, and only moderately portable
The reviewed G614 weighs about 5.51 pounds and measures approximately 13.94×10.39×0.89 inches. Its 280W adapter adds considerable weight to a backpack.
You can move it between home, school, and a dorm, but calling it ultraportable would be misleading. It is best treated as a transportable desktop replacement: practical to relocate, but not pleasant to carry all day. The substantial chassis and cooling hardware are part of what enables its sustained performance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The port selection is useful for a gaming desk, with USB4 Type-C, multiple USB-A ports, HDMI 2.1, Ethernet, and a headset jack. Exact port and wireless features can vary by generation and region, so confirm the listing for the specific model code.
Keyboard and touchpad
The G16 includes a full-size keyboard with per-key RGB lighting, 1.9mm key travel, five programmable M-key shortcuts, and a large touchpad with a virtual NumberPad function.
Tom’s Hardware recorded 92 words per minute at 98% accuracy in its typing test. That is a reviewer-specific result rather than a universal typing guarantee, but the keyboard is well suited to gaming and ordinary school or office work. The large touchpad is convenient when a mouse is unavailable.
Webcam and speakers are weak points
The 1080p IR webcam is usable but was described as grainy, with washed-out skin tones and visible smoothing. The built-in speakers were also criticized as subpar.
That is not a serious problem for a buyer who uses a headset and rarely joins video calls. Students, streamers, and hybrid workers should budget for an external webcam, microphone, or headset if built-in multimedia quality matters.
Battery life is acceptable for a gaming laptop, not for all-day use
The 90Wh battery lasted 5 hours 21 minutes in Tom’s Hardware’s automated mixed-use test at 150 nits with Advanced Optimus enabled.
That is reasonable for a high-powered gaming laptop but weak beside a modern thin-and-light notebook. It is not gaming runtime: demanding games drain the battery much faster and usually run with reduced performance when unplugged. Performance mode, brightness, refresh rate, and whether the discrete GPU remains active can all change endurance.

The G16 family generally provides access to memory and storage upgrades, though the exact slot arrangement and maximum capacity depend on the model. ASUS explicitly promotes expandable memory on the 2026 G615, including configurations advertised as upgradeable to 32GB plus 32GB of DDR5.
Before opening the chassis, verify the exact service manual and check:
- Whether the supplied RAM occupies one module or two
- The maximum supported memory for the model
- Whether a second M.2 slot is available
- Supported SSD dimensions and interface
- Whether opening the chassis affects warranty in your country
Disconnect the battery before internal work and follow ASUS’s service guidance. Adding RAM or another SSD can extend the laptop’s usefulness, but it cannot turn an RTX 5070 into an RTX 5070 Ti or RTX 5080.
The tested system included Armoury Crate, MyASUS, Aura Creator, CapCut, and McAfee. Armoury Crate controls performance modes, monitoring, hotkeys, and RGB lighting. MyASUS provides diagnostics, updates, registration, and support functions. McAfee can be uninstalled if you do not want it. Menu names and firmware behavior can change, so do not assume every model-year interface is identical.
Tom’s Hardware reported a one-year manufacturer warranty for its review unit. Warranty coverage varies by country, retailer, and optional protection plan; verify the policy for your region before buying.

Which configuration should you buy?
Best value target: RTX 5070 Ti, 32GB, 240Hz 1600p
The tested G614 specification is the most balanced target identified here: RTX 5070 Ti graphics with 12GB of VRAM, 32GB of memory, a 1TB SSD, the Ryzen 9 9955HX3D, and the 240Hz 2560×1600 display. It gives the panel enough performance to make high-refresh gaming worthwhile while also handling demanding CPU workloads.
Buy it when its price is meaningfully below an equivalently equipped RTX 5080 or ROG Strix Scar system. If its price approaches those higher-tier alternatives, the value proposition weakens.
Budget choice: RTX 5070 with a 165Hz panel
A G614 with an RTX 5070, 16GB of RAM, and a 165Hz FHD+ display can be a good deal at a substantial discount. It is suitable for high-refresh 1080p gaming and competent 1600p play with sensible settings.
Avoid paying only a small discount for this configuration when the 32GB/240Hz version is nearby in price. The weaker panel and lower memory capacity can matter more over the laptop’s lifespan than the initial saving.
High-end choice: RTX 5080 G615
An RTX 5080 G615 is aimed at buyers who want more native 1600p performance, ray-tracing headroom, and longer-term GPU capacity. It makes more sense for demanding AAA games than for esports titles, office work, or buyers who plan to replace the laptop soon.
ROG Strix G16 alternatives
Lenovo Legion Pro 5/5i and Legion 7i: Compare these directly when pricing and GPU power are similar. The G16’s advantage may be its CPU/display combination, but the exact Legion configuration determines the result.
ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16: Choose this family when portability, a thinner design, and a more understated appearance matter more than maximum sustained performance, cooling headroom, ports, and easy upgrades. See ASUS’s ROG Zephyrus range.
ROG Strix Scar 16: The Scar is the natural step up for buyers seeking more premium chassis features or higher-end configurations. Tom’s Hardware notes that the G16 gives up features such as PCIe 5.0 support, a toolless bottom panel, and some RGB effects. Do not pay Scar-level money for a G16 without checking what you are giving up.
Alienware 16 Area-51 and Razer Blade 16: These are relevant alternatives for buyers prioritizing different combinations of design, premium materials, display options, and performance. Compare complete specifications rather than brand reputation or GPU name alone.
Desktop PC plus a cheaper laptop: This can be the better solution if you rarely need high-performance computing away from a desk. The G16’s appeal is having strong gaming and productivity performance in one transportable machine.
Buying checklist
- Confirm the complete model code: G614 or G615, plus the model year.
- Check the exact CPU and GPU, not just “ROG Strix G16.”
- Find the GPU’s stated wattage and Dynamic Boost behavior.
- Verify whether the display is 2560×1600 at 240Hz or FHD+/1920×1200 at 165Hz.
- Prefer 32GB of RAM for content creation, development, virtual machines, and heavy multitasking.
- Check whether the SSD can be expanded through a second M.2 slot.
- Compare the current price with similarly equipped Legion, Scar, Alienware, and Razer systems.
- Check the return policy and regional warranty before purchase.
- Remember that the 280W charger adds to the practical travel burden.
Who should buy the ASUS ROG Strix G16?
Buy the G16 if you want high-performance gaming in a 16-inch format, usually play while plugged in, value a fast 1600p display, run CPU-heavy workloads, and want accessible RAM and SSD upgrades. The RTX 5070 Ti/32GB/240Hz configuration is the strongest balance in the supplied lineup.
Skip it if you need all-day battery life, quiet operation, genuinely lightweight travel, premium built-in speakers, or an excellent webcam. Also skip a particular listing if it charges a premium price while pairing a weaker GPU with only 16GB of RAM or a 165Hz FHD+ panel.
