Asus ROG Strix G18 (2025) Review: A Great 18-Inch Screen, but an Awkward RTX 5070 Balance

The 2025 ROG Strix G18 delivers a brilliant large-format gaming experience, but its RTX 5070 configuration makes most sense at a discount and for buyers who value the 18-inch screen and powerful CPU.

The 2025 Asus ROG Strix G18 G814 is best for players who want a large, fast screen and a laptop that will mostly stay on a desk. Its tested 18-inch 2560×1600, 240Hz panel, strong Ryzen 9 9955HX, comfortable keyboard and accessible upgrade points make it a capable desktop replacement. The catch is the RTX 5070: it can run games well, but at a premium price it is a less persuasive gaming investment than a similarly priced laptop with an RTX 5070 Ti. Buy this G18 for its screen, CPU-heavy work and spacious format—not just its Ryzen 9 badge.

Which ROG Strix G18 configuration is this review about?

“ROG Strix G18 2025” describes a family, not one fixed specification. ASUS lists G814 variants with different processors, graphics chips and displays, including Ryzen 9 8940HX, RTX 5060 and RTX 5050 options, as well as lower-refresh panels. This assessment covers Notebookcheck’s tested configuration: Ryzen 9 9955HX, RTX 5070 Laptop GPU, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD and the 18-inch 2560×1600 240Hz IPS-level display. Confirm the full SKU and panel before ordering; a listing with the same family name may be a materially different laptop. ASUS G814 specifications

Review-era price context $2,449 in the review summary and €2,299 in its specification area; regional/configuration-specific, not a verified current price

Benchmark and panel measurements below describe Notebookcheck’s sample, not guaranteed results for every retail unit. Firmware, power profile and component suppliers can vary. ASUS’s configuration and component information is on its ROG Strix G18 product page.

The 18-inch display is the strongest reason to choose it

The reviewed screen combines a 16:10 workspace with 2560×1600 resolution and a 240Hz refresh rate. That means plenty of room for menus and productivity alongside fast motion in competitive games. ASUS specifies 100% DCI-P3 coverage, Pantone validation, anti-glare treatment and 3ms response time for this premium panel; other G814 configurations may instead have 144Hz displays with sRGB coverage.

Notebookcheck measured about 557cd/m² average brightness and 582cd/m² peak brightness, 1,455:1 contrast, full sRGB coverage, 99.4% Display P3 and 87.7% AdobeRGB. It also found accurate colors after calibration. Those results make this panel suitable for gaming and reasonably serious image work, especially when its size is useful. It is still an IPS-level display, not proof of OLED-like contrast or high-end HDR performance.

Ryzen 9 performance is excellent, but gaming is GPU-limited

The 9955HX is a 16-core, 32-thread processor. Notebookcheck recorded 2,036 points in Cinebench 2024 multi-core in Turbo mode and 19,523 in Geekbench 6.7 multi-core, alongside strong compression and encoding results. Those are lab results under particular settings; BIOS, memory, temperature and power mode can change scores. For rendering, compiling, encoding or virtual machines, the processor has headroom many gaming workloads do not need.

That mismatch is the key buying question. The RTX 5070 Laptop GPU is competent, but it is the limiting component for demanding games at the screen’s native resolution. The system’s high-end CPU does not make it equivalent to a laptop with a faster GPU. If gaming is your main workload, it is worth comparing the price with RTX 5070 Ti systems before paying extra for this particular CPU configuration.

Gaming performance: strong at 1080p, more demanding at native resolution

ASUS specifies an RTX 5070 Laptop GPU with 8GB GDDR7, up to 115W maximum graphics power, 100W base power plus 15W Dynamic Boost, and a listed ROG Boost clock of 1,475MHz. These are configuration and operating-mode specifications, not a promise that every game will sustain the same power. ASUS also describes different total system power allocations by mode; do not treat a maximum Manual-mode budget as a constant gaming draw.

Notebookcheck’s selected 1920×1080 results include 121.9fps in Baldur’s Gate 3 at Ultra, 153.5fps in GTA V at Highest and about 140.6fps in Far Cry 6 at Ultra. Some lighter or older games reached roughly 180fps or more. These are individual benchmark results; the source figures do not establish a universal frame rate or a matching result at 2560×1600. Resolution, game version, ray tracing and settings affect performance.

The panel’s 240Hz ceiling is most useful in lighter games or with settings tuned for high frame rates. At native 1600p, demanding titles put more pressure on the RTX 5070, and its 8GB of VRAM may constrain some newer games using high-resolution textures and ray tracing. DLSS Super Resolution renders at a lower internal resolution and upscales; Frame Generation can create additional displayed frames, but neither makes every demanding game equivalent to native rendering at a high frame rate. Check per-game support and image quality rather than assuming a feature will erase the GPU’s limits.

Large, stable and desk-first

The chassis is substantial: Notebookcheck measured 2.88kg, compared with ASUS’s listed 3.00kg. The review measured the 280W power adapter at about 0.79kg, putting laptop and adapter together near 3.7kg before a bag or accessories. It is manageable to move between rooms, but a poor fit for frequent commuting.

The large footprint gives the G18 space for its keyboard and screen, and Notebookcheck found the chassis stable. Its smooth surfaces attract fingerprints. The hinge allows the lid to open wide, though some movement is possible. For a fixed desk, the 18-inch display can reduce the need for an external monitor; the size and power brick are the trade-off for that built-in workspace.

Cooling keeps the surface controlled, not the room quiet

ASUS uses a tri-fan cooling system, a full-width heatsink and surrounding vents. In Notebookcheck’s testing, maximum fan noise was about 44.1dB(A) in Quiet mode, 49.7dB(A) in Performance and 57.4dB(A) in Turbo. Its stress test recorded a maximum surface temperature of about 43°C; under that test condition, CPU and GPU power eventually settled around 45W and 100W. These measurements describe a particular lab workload and profile.

The practical trade-off is clear: temperatures on the outside remained controlled while fans were often audible, with Turbo particularly intrusive in a quiet room. ASUS’s power ceilings depend on workload, firmware and Armoury Crate mode, so maximum advertised figures should not be read as sustained performance in every game.

Battery life is respectable for the class, not gaming endurance

The 90Wh battery lasted 7 hours 5 minutes in Notebookcheck’s Wi-Fi browsing test at 150cd/m² and 60Hz, and 4 hours 26 minutes at maximum brightness. These are controlled web-browsing results, not gaming runtimes. Playing on battery will be much shorter and performance is reduced; high brightness, 240Hz operation and discrete-GPU activity can also cut endurance. Treat the G18 as transportable, not an all-day unplugged gaming machine.

Keyboard, camera, ports and everyday use

Notebookcheck found the keyboard comfortable, a practical fit for long gaming sessions and general work. It has a full-size layout and Aura Sync RGB lighting. The large palm rest supports desk use, while the touchpad handles routine navigation. The 1080p webcam’s image quality was judged average, so it is not a standout choice for frequent video calls. The built-in audio is usable for games and video, but headphones or external speakers remain the better choice for focused listening.

The configuration includes Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, not Wi-Fi 7. Notebookcheck identified two USB-C 4.0 ports, one supporting Power Delivery, plus Ethernet. The side ports sit around the middle of the chassis, which can affect cable routing near a mouse. USB-C charging is useful for lighter use, but it should not be assumed to replace the high-wattage proprietary adapter for full gaming performance. Check the exact regional SKU’s port layout and wireless specification before purchase. ASUS’s specifications

Accessible RAM and storage help extend its useful life

Notebookcheck found that removing the bottom panel provides access to the fans, battery, Wi-Fi module and two RAM/SSD areas. ASUS describes DDR5 memory and PCIe storage support for the family, including one slot supporting PCIe Gen 5 drives. Slot population and maximum memory depend on the exact SKU, so verify them rather than assuming an empty second slot or a universal upgrade ceiling.

Before upgrading, match the memory specification, check SSD dimensions and cooling needs, and consult ASUS’s service and warranty terms for your region. Disconnecting the battery may be necessary during internal work. The access is useful, but it does not make every upgrade risk-free or guarantee that a particular retail variant has the same internal arrangement.

How it compares with the alternatives

ROG Strix G16

Choose the G16 if you want a smaller, more travel-friendly ROG gaming laptop and do not need the G18’s 18-inch workspace. Notebookcheck’s review judged the G16 more appealing overall than this RTX 5070 G18, chiefly because the G18’s value balance and fan activity weaken its case. The larger G18 remains the better fit when screen size and desktop-replacement ergonomics are priorities.

An RTX 5070 Ti laptop

For gaming-first buyers, a comparable RTX 5070 Ti system is the more important price check. Notebookcheck’s comparison supports the concern that faster GPU alternatives can be more compelling at similar prices. If the Ti model costs only modestly more and has comparable memory, storage and display quality, it is likely the stronger gaming purchase. No single current model or price is established here.

Other G18 G814 configurations

A lower-priced G814 with an RTX 5060 or RTX 5050, Ryzen 9 8940HX or 144Hz panel is not the configuration reviewed here. It may suit a different budget, but compare the exact GPU, screen and CPU rather than using the shared “2025 ROG Strix G18” label as shorthand for equivalent performance.

What price makes this configuration worthwhile?

The review-era $2,449 and €2,299 figures are historical and region-specific, not confirmed August 2026 checkout prices. No live retail price is established here, so the buying decision should be made against the listing in your region and comparable RTX 5070 Ti machines.

  • Strong buy: materially discounted below comparable RTX 5070 Ti laptops, with the 240Hz panel and full reviewed specifications confirmed.
  • Conditional buy: a reasonable price if the 18-inch display, strong multi-core CPU and desk-based format matter more to you than maximum gaming frames per dollar.
  • Poor value: close to or above the price of newer RTX 5070 Ti or RTX 5080 options with otherwise comparable specifications.
  • Skip the listing: if it omits the exact SKU or substitutes an RTX 5060/5050, a 144Hz panel, a different processor or a regional configuration you did not intend to buy.

Before checkout, verify CPU model, GPU model and power specification, screen refresh rate and resolution, RAM, SSD, operating system, keyboard layout and warranty region. Retail listings can flatten meaningful differences into the same family name.

Verdict

The ROG Strix G18 2025 is a compelling large-format desktop replacement, but the RTX 5070/9955HX configuration is not an automatic recommendation at premium pricing. Its 18-inch 240Hz display, unusually capable CPU, comfortable keyboard and upgrade access are real strengths. Its GPU can deliver enjoyable gaming, but does not always justify a price that approaches faster RTX 5070 Ti systems. Choose it when the screen and CPU-heavy work are central to the purchase and the price is right; choose a stronger-GPU laptop when gaming performance per dollar comes first.
