The 2024 Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 is an excellent plugged-in gaming laptop, but it is not an excellent value at any price. Its full-power RTX 4080 or RTX 4090 Laptop GPU, Core i9-14900HX processor, and superb 240Hz Mini LED display make it a compelling desktop replacement for high-refresh 1600p gaming. However, its 2.65kg chassis, large power brick, loud Turbo-mode fans, weak 720p webcam, and modest battery life limit its appeal away from a desk.
In 2026, the Scar 16 makes sense when clearance or refurbished pricing puts it clearly below newer flagship laptops, or when its unusually bright Mini LED screen is the deciding feature. The RTX 4080 configuration is the more sensible version. The RTX 4090 Laptop GPU offers more VRAM and performance, but its historically large premium is difficult to justify unless the price difference is small.

What configuration is this review about?
The product family is the ROG Strix SCAR 16 (2024), model family G634. The main independent review configuration used an Intel Core i9-14900HX, RTX 4080 Laptop GPU, 32GB-class memory configuration, 1TB SSD, and the 16-inch 2560×1600 Mini LED display.

Asus also sold an RTX 4090 Laptop GPU version. The RTX 4080 model has 12GB of GDDR6 VRAM, while the RTX 4090 model has 16GB. Both are specified for up to 175W, although the exact experience depends on the regional model, firmware, power profile, cooling, and driver version.

Do not assume every G634 listing is identical. Before buying, verify the exact model suffix, GPU, wattage, display type, memory, SSD capacity, operating system, keyboard layout, and warranty. Some listings describe the screen only as “QHD” without confirming the Mini LED panel.
Performance: a genuine 1600p gaming powerhouse
The Scar 16 is designed to deliver desktop-like performance while connected to its charger. Its Core i9-14900HX has 24 cores and 32 threads, with boost speeds up to 5.8GHz. The RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 Laptop GPUs support DLSS 3, frame generation, ray tracing, Advanced Optimus, and a MUX switch that can bypass the integrated graphics path.
That combination is more than enough for 2560×1600 gaming at high or ultra settings. It is also well suited to esports games targeting the 240Hz panel, although reaching 240 frames per second depends on the game, settings, and whether the title is CPU- or GPU-limited. Ray-traced games benefit particularly from DLSS and frame generation.

In its cumulative 3DMark comparison, it was approximately 6% behind the Lenovo Legion Pro 7, while a lower-power 140W RTX 4080 configuration in the HP Omen 16 was about 24% behind it. Those figures describe a particular review configuration and should not be treated as a guarantee for every G634 model.
The RTX 4090 Laptop GPU is faster and has 16GB of VRAM, which can help in demanding games and creative workloads. It is still a mobile GPU, not the desktop RTX 4090. Buyers should not expect desktop-class RTX 4090 performance from the laptop part.
RTX 4080 or RTX 4090?
The RTX 4080 version is the value choice. It already provides excellent performance at the panel’s native resolution, and its 12GB of VRAM is sufficient for most current laptop gaming scenarios. The RTX 4090 version is worth considering when you need its additional VRAM for particular games or GPU-accelerated workloads and the price premium is modest. Historically, the reviewed RTX 4080/1TB model cost about $2,900 in the US, while an RTX 4090 model was listed around $3,625. Those are review-era prices from 2024, not current 2026 prices.
The Mini LED display is the Scar 16’s defining feature
The 16-inch display uses a 16:10 aspect ratio, 2560×1600 resolution, 240Hz refresh rate, and a Mini LED backlight with more than 2,000 local-dimming zones; the review specification identifies 2,048 zones. Asus also specifies a 3ms response time, G-Sync, Pantone validation, HDR10, Dolby Vision, and 100% DCI-P3 coverage.
Independent testing measured approximately 503 nits in SDR mode and 1,106 nits in HDR mode. The panel covered all of sRGB and approximately 99.8% of Display P3, with roughly 94% brightness uniformity. These results make it unusually versatile: it is fast enough for competitive gaming, bright enough for convincing HDR highlights, and wide-gamut enough for serious photo and video work when configured appropriately.
The “1,100-nit display” description needs context. That is an HDR peak measurement, not an all-screen SDR brightness level. HDR brightness also depends on the content, Windows HDR configuration, application support, and local-dimming behavior.
Single-zone versus multi-zone mode
Asus Armoury Crate allows the backlight to operate in different modes:
- Single-zone mode: The panel behaves more consistently across the screen and is the better choice for color-sensitive work.
- Multi-zone mode: Local dimming produces deeper blacks and stronger HDR contrast, but brightness can be less uniform and blooming may appear around bright objects on dark backgrounds.
Mini LED does not provide the pixel-level black control of OLED. Bright subtitles, mouse pointers, or stars against a dark background can produce visible halos, especially in multi-zone HDR mode. The trade-off is much higher sustained brightness and no need to accept OLED’s particular burn-in and brightness compromises.

Notebookcheck recorded PWM at approximately 2.04kHz at low brightness and much higher frequencies at higher brightness. Many users will not notice it, but people sensitive to flicker should test the display promptly and use the applicable return policy.
Cooling is effective, but Turbo mode is loud
The Scar 16 uses a Tri-Fan cooling system, full-surround ventilation, and Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal. That hardware helps the high-power CPU and GPU sustain performance, but it cannot make the laptop quiet under heavy load.
Notebookcheck measured up to approximately 58dB(A) in Turbo mode. Performance mode is also loud, while Silent mode is much more tolerable but reduces gaming performance. LaptopMedia found that Performance mode could reduce noise while retaining a 160W GPU power target, making it the more useful everyday gaming preset for many owners.
The practical choice is therefore straightforward: use Turbo when every last frame matters, Performance for a better noise-to-performance balance, and Silent for light work or quieter environments. The keyboard and palm rest can remain usable even while internal components are hot, but the fans are unmistakable. This is not a suitable full-power gaming machine for a quiet room, library, or shared office.
Liquid-metal cooling is effective but makes servicing more specialized than ordinary thermal paste. It is not a reason to open the laptop casually. A stand may improve airflow and ergonomics, but it will not transform the Scar 16 into a quiet system.
Large, heavy, and built for a desk
The tested laptop weighs approximately 2.65kg (5.84lb) and is roughly 22.6–30.4mm thick. Add the substantial power brick and it becomes a transportable desktop replacement rather than a comfortable daily commuter.
The metal lid and substantial chassis give it a premium feel, while the base is plastic. The aggressive RGB lighting, per-key illumination, and removable Armor Caps clearly target gamers. It is reasonable to carry between rooms, an office, or a LAN event, but it is a poor choice for frequent train, plane, or campus travel.
The 16-inch size is a useful compromise compared with an 18-inch gaming laptop. The ROG Strix Scar 18 follows the same high-power concept with a larger display, but it is even less convenient to transport.
Keyboard, touchpad, webcam, and speakers
The chiclet keyboard has per-key RGB lighting, customizable effects, and a comfortable feel. The touchpad includes a virtual number pad, which is useful for occasional numeric entry but is not a replacement for a physical numpad. Some users may need time to adjust to the short right Shift key and the placement of the media controls.
The webcam is a significant weakness. The tested configuration uses a 720p, 0.9MP camera, which is disappointing in a premium laptop intended for streaming, meetings, and content creation. A dedicated webcam is the sensible solution for regular video calls.
The laptop has four speakers with Smart Amp and Dolby Atmos support. Those specifications suggest a more complete multimedia system than many gaming laptops, but speaker quality should be judged by the particular review and not assumed solely from the feature list.

Battery life is acceptable for light work, poor for gaming
The Scar 16 has a 90Wh battery. In Notebookcheck’s standardized tests, it lasted approximately 7 hours 14 minutes in Wi-Fi browsing at 150 nits using Silent mode, MSHybrid graphics, and 60Hz. Its H.264 video-loop result was approximately 7.5 hours under similar conditions.

In a cited Witcher 3 test at 1080p Ultra, the laptop lasted approximately one hour on battery. Running the display at 240Hz, using the discrete GPU, increasing brightness, or selecting a performance profile will reduce runtime further.
For web browsing and video playback, the battery is serviceable for a large gaming laptop. For serious gaming, the charger is effectively mandatory. MUX and Optimus settings, display refresh rate, brightness, and Armoury Crate’s power profile all materially affect endurance.
Ports and upgradeability
The chassis provides two SODIMM memory slots and two PCIe 4.0 NVMe slots, making the Scar 16 more flexible than many thin gaming laptops. Asus specifies support for up to 64GB of DDR5 memory, while total storage capacity depends on the configuration and installed drives. There is no Gen 5 SSD slot in the tested model, and LaptopMedia’s tested configuration did not include Wi-Fi 7.
LaptopMedia identified two USB-C ports and two USB-A Gen 2 ports in its tested configuration. Exact port placement and capabilities can vary by regional model, so confirm the seller’s specification before purchase.

The bottom panel is user-accessible, but opening the laptop can affect warranty treatment if damage is caused or local warranty terms impose restrictions. The reviews also noted shortcomings in memory and NVMe thermal-pad coverage. BIOS undervolting may be available on some firmware versions, but settings and warranty implications must be checked for the exact model.

The relevant comparison in 2026 is not simply whether the Scar 16 was excellent in 2024. It was. The question is whether its current price reflects its age. Exact current street pricing is not established here, and Asus’s product page did not provide a usable current dollar price in the retrieved data. Compare the exact G634 configuration against current retailer listings rather than relying on the historical $2,900 or $3,625 figures.
What to check before buying
- Confirm that the listing is the 2024 G634 model and identify the exact GPU.
- Confirm that the display is the 240Hz Mini LED panel, not a different regional screen option.
- Check GPU wattage, RAM, SSD capacity, keyboard layout, operating system, and warranty.
- For refurbished or used units, verify the return period, battery health, display uniformity, and evidence that the liquid-metal cooling system has not been disturbed.
- Test for blooming and PWM sensitivity promptly if you are sensitive to either.
- Do not pay a premium for an RTX 4090 Laptop GPU configuration without calculating whether its extra VRAM and performance justify the difference.
Verdict
The 2024 Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 remains one of the more compelling high-performance 16-inch gaming laptops of its generation. Its RTX 4080 configuration can drive demanding 1600p games, its Core i9 processor suits heavy creation work, and the Mini LED panel is genuinely special for bright HDR gaming and wide-gamut content.
But the laptop’s strengths are tied to desk use. Fan noise can reach approximately 58dB(A), battery gaming lasts about an hour in the cited test, the chassis and charger are heavy, and the 720p webcam is poor for a premium machine. Its 2024 platform also makes price discipline essential in 2026.
