ASUS ROG Strix X570-E Gaming Review: Still Worth Buying for Ryzen in 2026?

The ASUS ROG Strix X570-E Gaming is still excellent for high-end AM4 systems, but its age makes it a conditional buy rather than a smart default for new PCs.

Verdict: The ASUS ROG Strix X570-E Gaming remains an excellent high-end AM4 motherboard, but it is no longer a sensible default for a new PC. Its strong VRM, eight SATA ports, three M.2 sockets, 2.5Gb Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, extensive USB connectivity and BIOS FlashBack make it particularly appealing for existing Ryzen 3000/5000 owners, storage-heavy systems and discounted used or old-stock purchases. For a completely new build, however, a current platform is usually the better investment.

This review covers the original ROG Strix X570-E Gaming, not the separate ROG Strix X570-E Gaming WiFi II.

  • Poor fit: anyone paying a premium mainly for the ROG branding or RGB lighting.

Hardware quality and current value are separate questions. The engineering is still strong; AM4 is the limiting factor.

CPU compatibility and BIOS support

ASUS’s CPU support database lists compatible Ryzen 2000, Ryzen 3000, selected Ryzen 4000G and Ryzen 5000 processors. Exact support depends on the processor and minimum BIOS version, so check the model-specific CPU support list before buying.

Do not assume an old retail unit shipped Ryzen 5000-ready. ASUS’s support page lists BIOS 5051, dated June 30, 2026, with an AGESA update and security updates; it is marked as a beta release. Current firmware availability does not prove that every old unit has that firmware installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fortunately, BIOS FlashBack can update supported firmware without a working CPU. ASUS’s instructions identify the required filename as SX570EG.CAP, using BIOSRenamer where applicable. Follow the model-specific instructions on the ASUS BIOS page rather than applying a generic FlashBack procedure.

VRM: easily strong enough for Ryzen 9

The X570-E Gaming uses a 12+4 power-stage arrangement: twelve International Rectifier IR3555 60A stages for the CPU and four for the SoC, controlled by an ASUS ASP1405 PWM controller operating at 6+2. The stages are teamed rather than controlled through phase doublers, according to AnandTech’s electrical analysis.

In AnandTech’s stress testing, the VRM reached 52°C with a K-type thermocouple and 47.2°C at its hottest point using a thermal camera. Those are strong results, and the board has ample power-delivery capacity for Ryzen 9 5900X and 5950X processors under normal workloads, including sensible PBO tuning.

  • Comprehensive Connectivity: WIFI 6, PCIe 4.0, 2x M.2 Slots, 1GbE LAN, USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C

That does not mean the board is magically cool or efficient in every system. Tom’s Hardware measured relatively high full-load power consumption and thermal output in its test configuration, while KitGuru made similar observations. VRM temperature, CPU temperature and whole-system power are different measurements. Case airflow, cooler performance, voltage, workload and silicon quality still matter.

Do not judge the board solely by the “16-phase” label. Power-stage quality, heatsinks, controller behavior, firmware and measured temperatures matter more than phase-count marketing.

Storage and expansion

Storage is one of this board’s strongest reasons to exist. ASUS lists eight SATA 6Gb/s ports, RAID 0/1/10 support and three M.2 sockets. The feature summary may emphasize support for up to two M.2 drives, so the detailed specification and manual are the better references when planning three-drive configurations.

The M.2 sockets do not represent three identical, unrestricted connections. Their PCIe generation and lane source depend on the installed CPU and the X570 chipset. Some expansion slots and connectivity also share chipset resources. Before installing several NVMe drives, SATA devices and add-in cards, consult the ASUS manual and board diagram.

The two primary PCIe x16 slots can operate at x16 or x8/x8 with supported processors. Additional chipset-connected slots are useful for capture cards, sound cards, storage controllers and networking, but lower-slot and PCIe x1 lane-sharing rules can affect the final configuration. A large graphics card may also obstruct nearby slots.

Multi-GPU support is a compatibility feature, not a recommendation for modern gaming. Most contemporary gaming systems should use one graphics card.

Networking and rear I/O

The networking mix is unusually good for an older AM4 board: a Realtek RTL8125-CG 2.5Gb Ethernet controller, Intel I211-AT Gigabit Ethernet, Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 and Bluetooth 5.0.

That gives the board useful wired redundancy and 2.5Gb capability, provided the router, switch, cabling, storage and other endpoint can support it. Wi-Fi 6 does not mean Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7, and real wireless performance depends on antenna placement, drivers and local conditions.

USB connectivity is another power-user strength. AnandTech counted 13 Type-A USB ports and two Type-C ports, while Tom’s Hardware highlighted the board’s eight rear USB 3.x Gen 2 ports alongside its eight SATA connections. USB 3.2 Gen 2 is not USB4, so buyers needing USB4-class capabilities should choose a newer platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The rear I/O also includes a dedicated BIOS FlashBack port and button, video outputs for compatible processors with integrated graphics, and diagnostic indicators. The HDMI 2.0b and DisplayPort 1.2 outputs will not produce an image from a conventional graphics-less Ryzen desktop CPU.

Audio and onboard features

ASUS uses its SupremeFX S1220A audio implementation, with up to 32-bit/192kHz playback under supported conditions, quoted 120dB stereo playback SNR, 113dB recording-input SNR, dual operational amplifiers, optical S/PDIF and impedance sensing for front and rear headphone outputs.

For gaming headsets, powered speakers and normal desktop use, the onboard audio is more than adequate. It should not be treated as a substitute for a dedicated audio interface or premium external DAC. ASUS notes that 32-bit/192kHz playback is limited to eight channels because of HDA bandwidth.

Memory and PCIe caveats

The four DDR4 DIMM slots support up to 128GB. The advertised DDR4-4400 figure is an overclocking target, not a guarantee for every kit or processor. Stability depends on the Ryzen memory controller, DIMM rank, slot population, BIOS, voltage, timings and the memory kit’s validation status. Consult ASUS’s memory QVL when compatibility matters.

X570 provides PCIe 4.0 capability, but the installed CPU determines which lanes and generation are actually available. Do not assume that an older AM4 processor or APU exposes the same PCIe configuration as a Ryzen 3000 or Ryzen 5000 desktop chip.

Performance: strong, but not a gaming upgrade by itself

Independent reviews agree that the board performs competitively. AnandTech reported strong CPU and gaming results, fast POST behavior, very good out-of-box DPC latency, solid voltage behavior and competitive VRM thermals. Tom’s Hardware also found strong overall benchmark performance, although its results showed relatively high full-load power and heat. It identified one synthetic loss as likely anomalous. KitGuru likewise described the power delivery as effectively overbuilt for its market position.

These older reviews used period CPUs, memory, graphics cards and BIOS versions. They remain useful for board behavior, not as current universal benchmark forecasts. In a matched system, motherboard differences typically produce little or no meaningful gaming-FPS advantage; CPU, GPU, memory configuration, cooling and firmware matter much more. Treat differences below roughly 1% as practically insignificant.

BIOS setup and recovery essentials

  1. Confirm the exact model: ROG Strix X570-E Gaming.
  2. Check the current ASUS CPU support and BIOS pages.
  3. Download the correct BIOS and use ASUS BIOSRenamer, or rename it to SX570EG.CAP as instructed.
  4. Format a USB drive as FAT32 and copy the file to its root directory.
  5. Connect the required motherboard power cables, insert the drive into the designated FlashBack port and press the FlashBack button.
  6. Wait for the indicator to finish. Do not interrupt power.
  7. Afterward, load optimized defaults, then reconfigure memory profiles, fan curves, PBO, Curve Optimizer and other settings manually.

Enable DOCP for compatible memory kits and use Q-Fan for cooling control. ReBAR/SAM-related options may also be relevant with compatible CPU, motherboard firmware and graphics-card combinations. A beta BIOS should not automatically be treated as preferable simply because it is newer.

Limitations that matter in 2026

  • AM4 is mature: the board uses DDR4 and does not provide a modern CPU upgrade path beyond AM4.
  • No PCIe 5.0 or USB4: current premium platforms offer newer connectivity.
  • Active chipset cooling: inspect older units for chipset-fan noise or failure.
  • Uncertain availability: the original model may be old stock, refurbished or used. ASUS’s US page does not provide a dependable current retail price.
  • Potentially poor value: an expensive X570 board can cost enough to make a newer platform more attractive, even before considering DDR5.

Original model versus WiFi II

The ROG Strix X570-E Gaming WiFi II is a separate, later ASUS product. Do not use its networking, firmware, price or feature list as evidence for the original board. ASUS listed a US eStore price of $349.99 in the supplied research snapshot, but paying roughly that amount for an AM4/X570 board is difficult to justify for most new systems.

Buying used: what to inspect

For a used or old-stock board, verify the return policy and check:

  • Socket condition, retention mechanism and signs of bent pins or liquid damage.
  • Presence of the Wi-Fi antenna, M.2 covers, screws and I/O shield if those accessories matter.
  • All DIMM slots, both Ethernet ports, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, M.2 sockets and SATA ports.
  • BIOS FlashBack operation and diagnostic display behavior.
  • Chipset-fan noise, grinding or failure.
  • Whether the seller can demonstrate a stable boot with the intended processor and memory.

Final recommendation

Existing AM4 owner: buy it if you need its connectivity, storage capacity or replacement-board quality and the price is clearly discounted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

High-end AM4 workstation user: it remains a strong match for Ryzen 9 processors, multiple drives and add-in cards, provided you understand the lane-sharing layout.

Budget-conscious new builder: consider a cheaper AM4 board if you need only one graphics card, one or two drives and basic networking.

New high-performance builder: choose a current platform unless you already own expensive AM4 parts or have a specific requirement for this board’s eight SATA ports, extensive I/O and dual networking.
