The U.S. release date was confirmed in 2025
Microsoft and ASUS announced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X on August 20, 2025. U.S. preorders began September 25, and both handhelds launched on October 16, 2025. That means the Best Buy listing is a current availability update—not a new confirmation of an upcoming 2026 release.

ROG Xbox Ally versus Ally X
ROG Xbox Ally
The $599.99 model is the lower-cost option. It uses AMD’s Ryzen Z2 A processor, 16GB of memory, and a 512GB SSD. It makes the most sense for buyers who want an Xbox-focused Windows handheld for lighter or moderately demanding games, cloud gaming, or use as a companion to a desktop or console.
The 512GB drive may require regular storage management because modern PC games can be very large. It is also the weaker choice for buyers who expect the handheld to serve as their primary gaming PC for several years.
ROG Xbox Ally X
The Ally X costs $400 more and upgrades the processor to AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme. It also includes 24GB of memory and a 1TB SSD. Those hardware differences provide more capacity and headroom for demanding PC games, multitasking, streaming, and longer-term use.
However, the higher price does not guarantee a fixed frame-rate advantage. Actual performance depends on the game, graphics settings, power mode, drivers, resolution, and thermal conditions. The official specifications do not establish a universal percentage improvement.
Both models use a 7-inch Full HD display with a 120Hz refresh rate and FreeSync Premium support, according to ASUS. A 120Hz panel can make supported games and menus feel smoother, but demanding games will not necessarily run at 120 frames per second.

It is a Windows handheld, not a traditional Xbox console
The ROG Xbox Ally is ASUS hardware running Windows 11 with Xbox-focused software integration. It is not a Microsoft-made Xbox console and is not limited to the Xbox Store.
Xbox features include an Xbox-oriented startup experience, a Game Bar accessed through the Xbox button, an aggregated library that can surface supported games from Xbox and other PC storefronts, cross-device progression for compatible games, and Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported. ASUS also positions the handhelds as Windows gaming PCs with access to a broader PC game catalog.
That does not mean every Xbox console game installs locally or that every PC game works perfectly with handheld controls. Some games are cloud-streamed, while others may be affected by launchers, DRM, anti-cheat systems, controller support, or Windows compatibility.

Both models include three months of Xbox Game Pass Premium, which Xbox describes as almost a $45 value. It is a promotional subscription, not lifetime access. The subscription can renew at the regular monthly price unless it is canceled, and game availability can change.
Cloud gaming also requires an appropriate subscription and a sufficiently reliable internet connection. Some games may need to be downloaded locally or purchased separately.
What Best Buy availability does—and does not—prove

Best Buy’s reviewed shopping results listed the ASUS Premium 2-in-1 Hard Case at $69.99 and the ASUS ROG Bulwark 7-in-1 Charging Dock at $139.99. Prices and availability can change.
The case is mainly useful for travel. The dock is more relevant to buyers who want an external display, USB peripherals, or a desk-style setup. Neither is required to use the handheld.
Which model should you buy?
Choose the standard ROG Xbox Ally if:
- $599.99 is your spending limit.
- You mainly play lighter PC games or use cloud streaming.
- You can manage a 512GB drive.
- You want Xbox-oriented software without paying for maximum hardware headroom.
Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if:
- You expect to play demanding PC games locally.
- You need 1TB of storage and 24GB of memory.
- The handheld will be your primary gaming PC.
- You are comfortable paying the additional $400.
Consider another handheld if:
- You primarily use Steam and prefer the simpler SteamOS experience of the Steam Deck OLED.
- You want a larger display and detachable controllers, as offered by the Lenovo Legion Go.
- You can find an older ROG Ally or another Windows handheld at a substantial discount.
