ASUS ROG Xbox Ally vs. Original ROG Ally: Bigger Doesn’t Always Mean Better

The ROG Xbox Ally adds a larger battery, contoured grips and an Xbox-first interface. But the original Ally came in Ryzen Z1 and Z1 Extreme versions, so game performance is not a simple spec-sheet verdict.

The 2025 ASUS ROG Xbox Ally improves on the original ROG Ally in battery capacity, grip design and its Xbox-focused interface—but the specifications available do not show that it is faster in games than the original Ally with Ryzen Z1 Extreme. The comparison also depends on which original Ally you mean: ASUS sold it with either Ryzen Z1 or Ryzen Z1 Extreme.

What changes between the Xbox Ally and the original Ally?

The standard ROG Xbox Ally (RC73YA) is a Windows handheld with Xbox branding and an Xbox full-screen experience. It is not a traditional Xbox console: it can access Xbox games and other PC storefronts, and Xbox says both handhelds support native, cloud and remote play. [Xbox Wire’s launch announcement]

Feature ROG Xbox Ally (2025, standard model) Original ROG Ally
Processor AMD Ryzen Z2 A (ASUS, 2025 specifications) Ryzen Z1 or Ryzen Z1 Extreme; configuration matters for performance (Windows Central, updated October 16, 2025)
Memory 16 GB LPDDR5X-6400 (ASUS, 2025 specifications) 16 GB (Windows Central, updated October 16, 2025)
Storage 512 GB M.2 2280 SSD; ASUS says it is upgradeable 512 GB (Windows Central, updated October 16, 2025)
Display 7-inch, 1920 × 1080, 120 Hz IPS with FreeSync Premium (ASUS, 2025 specifications) 7-inch, 1080p, 120 Hz (Windows Central, updated October 16, 2025)
Battery capacity 60 Wh (ASUS, 2025 specifications) 40 Wh (Windows Central, updated October 16, 2025)
Weight 670 g (Xbox, 2025 launch specifications) not stated in the cited Windows Central comparison
Controls and interface Contoured grips inspired by Xbox controllers; boots into an Xbox full-screen experience (Xbox, 2025 launch announcement) Original ROG Ally design and Windows handheld experience; a direct comfort comparison is not established by the cited specifications

Does the larger battery mean longer play time?

The Xbox Ally has a 60 Wh battery, compared with 40 Wh in the original Ally. That is a larger stated capacity, not a measured runtime result. The cited specifications do not establish how much longer either handheld lasts in a particular game or under matched brightness, performance and power settings. Treat battery capacity as a hardware advantage, not a guarantee of a specific number of extra hours.

Is the Xbox Ally faster in games?

Not on the evidence available for this comparison. The standard Xbox Ally uses Ryzen Z2 A, while the original ROG Ally was sold in Ryzen Z1 and Ryzen Z1 Extreme configurations. Specifications alone—and a comparison that does not provide matched game benchmarks—do not establish that the Z2 A beats the Z1 Extreme in games. Check the processor listed on an original Ally listing before comparing it with the Xbox Ally; a Z1 model and a Z1 Extreme model should not be treated as the same performance baseline.

Are the grips and Xbox interface worth choosing?

The Xbox Ally has redesigned, contoured grips inspired by Xbox controllers and starts in an Xbox full-screen experience. Those are meaningful design and interface differences if you prefer that shape or want a console-like entry point. They do not prove that the device is more comfortable for every hand or that Windows has been replaced: it remains a Windows handheld with access to other PC storefronts.

What about storage and an external monitor?

Both devices are listed with 512 GB of storage in the cited comparisons. ASUS specifies an M.2 2280 SSD for the Xbox Ally and says the drive can be upgraded. If you want to connect the Xbox Ally to an external monitor, ASUS says it supports monitor output through USB-C and recommends the ROG Bulwark Dock (2025) DG300 or another dock capable of 130 W. The dock is an optional setup path, not a requirement for handheld play. See ASUS’s specifications and dock guidance.

Which handheld should you choose?

  • Choose the ROG Xbox Ally if the larger stated battery capacity, contoured grips and Xbox-first interface are the changes you value. Its 2025 launch specifications list a 60 Wh battery and 670 g weight.
  • Consider an original ROG Ally if you find one at a compelling local price and know whether it has Ryzen Z1 or Ryzen Z1 Extreme. The processor configuration is essential context; the cited evidence does not establish a blanket game-performance winner.
  • Compare the exact listing before buying. Check the original Ally’s processor, the Xbox Ally’s model, storage and regional warranty, and the current price in your market. Xbox announced a US estimated retail price of $599.99 for the standard Xbox Ally ahead of its October 16, 2025 launch; that is historical launch pricing, not a verified current street price. Local stock, discounts and prices may differ.
