Asus ROG Xbox Ally X review: I love this Windows handheld for a few reasons, but price isn’t one of them

The ROG Xbox Ally X makes Windows handheld gaming more comfortable and controller-friendly, but its $999.99 US listing price makes value the harder sell.

The 2025 ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X is an unusually comfortable Windows gaming handheld with a more controller-friendly Xbox interface—but at the US ASUS Store’s listed price of $999.99 on October 7, 2026, it is difficult to call it a value. It makes the strongest case for someone who wants a portable Windows PC, likes the Xbox-style launcher and has no earlier Ally to upgrade from. It is not an Xbox console in handheld form.

What the ROG Xbox Ally X is—and what it isn’t

The ROG Xbox Ally X (model RC73XA) is a Windows 11 Home gaming PC designed to feel more like a handheld console. ASUS says it boots into a full-screen Xbox experience optimized for joystick and button navigation, while Windows remains available for settings, widgets, mods and games from other sources. Xbox describes the aggregated library as providing access to Xbox, Game Pass where available, Battle.net and other leading PC storefronts. These are software features layered onto Windows: the device does not run Xbox console games natively, and Game Pass is not included simply by buying the hardware.

ASUS’s 2025 announcement quoted Roanne Sones, CVP at Xbox: “We wanted to create an authentic Xbox experience in a handheld form factor. With ROG, we made it happen on the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X.” That ambition is most visible in the full-screen interface and dedicated Xbox button, which opens an enhanced Game Bar overlay. The result aims to make Windows gaming easier to navigate with a controller, rather than replace Windows with a console operating system.

What you get for the price

ASUS listed the RC73XA for $999.99 in its US store when its product page was accessed on October 7, 2026. That is a dated US listing, not a guaranteed price in every region or a promise of current stock; check the local price and exact regional model before buying.

Why reviewers like using it

The grip is a meaningful part of the appeal

Tom’s Hardware’s Andrew E. Freedman praised the controller-style grips and excellent ergonomics, and found the handheld-focused Xbox experience preferable to using the Windows 11 desktop. PC Gamer also praised the grip design from an ergonomic perspective. Those are reviewers’ assessments, not a guarantee that the shape will suit every hand, but comfort is a persuasive reason to consider this device if you expect long handheld sessions.

The Xbox layer helps, but Windows is still there

A dedicated Xbox button, Game Bar overlay and aggregated library give the Ally X a more console-like front door than a conventional Windows desktop. Underneath, however, it remains a Windows PC. Storefront access is a strength for players with games spread across PC services, but the interface does not make every game or storefront behave identically. Buyers should expect a Windows handheld experience with a more focused launcher—not the simplicity or compatibility guarantees of a dedicated console.

Why the price is hard to love

At the cited US listing price, the question is not whether the Ally X has a substantial specification sheet; it does. It is whether its comfort, full-screen Xbox experience and Windows flexibility are worth a premium over other ways to play. PC Gamer called the display disappointing for a device at this price and argued that the premium cost would be hard to justify for some buyers. That is a subjective review judgment, but it matters: the listed 1080p, 120Hz and 500-nit specifications do not by themselves establish how impressive the panel looks in use.

Windows Central’s Rebecca Spear, who said she spent several days with the device and ran benchmarks, described it as a worthy successor while questioning whether the Windows handheld experience and high cost justify the purchase. Her review disclosed a sample from ASUS ROG/Microsoft and said the companies did not see or influence the review before publication. Tom’s Hardware likewise cautioned that the performance increase may not warrant an upgrade from an existing Ally. These are separate reviewers’ buying judgments, not a single matched comparison across every handheld.

Should you buy it?

It makes sense if you want a premium Windows handheld

  • You value controller-like grips and an interface designed for handheld navigation.
  • You want Windows and access to multiple PC storefronts, rather than a device limited to one console ecosystem.
  • You are comfortable paying the current local price for those conveniences, and have checked that the exact model is available where you live.

Think twice if price or an existing Ally matters most

  • If you already own an Ally, weigh the upgrade against the improvements you will actually notice. Tom’s Hardware questioned whether the performance gain alone justifies moving from an earlier Ally.
  • If you primarily want an Xbox console experience, the Ally X is not a substitute for native Xbox console gaming; it is a Windows PC with Xbox-oriented software.
  • If you are comparing it with other handhelds, compare prices in your market and look for performance tests using the same games and settings, battery tests under comparable conditions, screen quality, weight and comfort, storage options, and software friction. The available reviews do not provide one harmonized benchmark suite that establishes a universal winner.
