On December 8, 2025, the standard white ASUS ROG Xbox Ally dropped from its regular $599.99 price to $489.99 at Amazon and $499.99 at Best Buy. That $100–$110 reduction was significant because it moved ASUS’s entry-level Xbox-branded handheld PC below the $500 mark.
This was a limited US retail promotion, not a permanent MSRP reduction. ASUS’s official listing still shows the standard ROG Xbox Ally at $599.99, so shoppers should verify the live retailer price before buying.

The December 2025 deal in numbers
| Retailer | Promotional price | Regular price | Reported saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon | $489.99 | $599.99 | $110, about 18.3% |
| Best Buy | $499.99 | $599.99 | $100, about 16.7% |
The promotion was reported during the 2025 holiday shopping period and appeared at select US retailers. Availability, seller, condition, shipping, taxes and included promotions could vary. A marketplace or open-box listing should not be confused with a new unit sold directly by a major retailer.

Why getting below $500 matters
The standard ROG Xbox Ally was harder to recommend at $599.99 because that price put it close to more powerful handheld PCs and premium alternatives. At roughly $490–$500, its value proposition changes: buyers get a full Windows 11 gaming handheld with access to multiple PC storefronts without paying premium-handheld money.

The discount does not make the hardware faster. It simply makes the compromises easier to accept. The lower price partly offsets the standard model’s smaller memory allocation, smaller SSD and less powerful processor compared with the ROG Xbox Ally X.
It is best understood as an entry-level Windows gaming handheld with Xbox-focused software—not as a budget Xbox console.

The Ally X is not merely a black version of the same handheld. It has a substantially stronger processor, more memory, a larger battery, double the listed storage and USB4 connectivity. Its trade-offs are a higher price and greater weight.
Buy the discounted standard Ally if you mainly want portable access to PC and Xbox games, play indie or older titles, and can live with 512GB of storage and more modest performance.

It is a Windows handheld, not an Xbox console
The Xbox branding refers to the software experience and ecosystem integration. The ROG Xbox Ally runs Windows 11 and can access Steam, the Xbox app, PC Game Pass, Epic Games Store, GOG and other Windows software.
Its Xbox-oriented interface includes a controller-friendly full-screen experience, Xbox mode, Game Bar access and an aggregated game library. Xbox Play Anywhere titles can carry saves and entitlements between Xbox consoles, PC and supported handhelds where applicable.
That does not mean every Xbox game is available or performs identically on the device. Game availability and frame rates vary by title, settings and power mode. A Game Pass subscription also does not mean permanently owning every game in the catalog.
Xbox says the ROG Xbox Ally includes three months of Xbox Game Pass Premium, described as almost a $45 value. The offer is subject to eligibility, region and plan terms. The benefit must be claimed within 30 days of device activation, requires a valid payment method, is generally limited to new or eligible returning members, and continues automatically at the regular monthly price unless canceled.

What gaming performance should you expect?
The 7-inch display runs at 1080p and 120Hz, but that does not mean demanding games will run at native 1080p or 120 frames per second. ASUS’s marketing language should not be read as a universal performance guarantee; Microsoft also notes that actual results vary by game and frame-rate requirements.
Newer AAA games may require lower render resolutions, reduced graphics settings, an appropriate performance mode or upscaling. The standard model’s 16GB of shared memory can also limit the headroom available to integrated graphics in demanding games.
Storage is another practical limitation. The 512GB SSD is usable for a rotating library, but Windows and installed applications consume part of that capacity before games are added. Modern PC games can occupy tens or hundreds of gigabytes, so a few large installs can fill the drive quickly.
The M.2 2280 slot makes a larger SSD possible, while the microSD reader offers an easier way to expand a library. Those options add cost, and storage devices do not necessarily provide identical loading or performance characteristics. Opening the handheld to install an SSD also adds extra effort and risk.
Who should buy the ROG Xbox Ally at $500?
- PC gamers who want portability: Windows provides broader storefront access than a dedicated console.
- Game Pass subscribers: The Xbox-focused interface makes browsing and launching supported games more convenient.
- Xbox owners: Play Anywhere support can make existing compatible purchases more useful away from the television.
- Travelers: The handheld can combine portable PC gaming with a controller-shaped form factor.
- Buyers comfortable with moderate settings: The standard model makes more sense for indie games, older releases and less demanding PC titles.
Who should skip it or wait?
- Maximum-performance buyers: The Ally X is the better fit for sustained demanding AAA gaming.
- Large-library owners: 512GB may be restrictive without an SSD upgrade or secondary storage.
- Console-only shoppers: Windows offers flexibility but can involve more desktop-style setup and troubleshooting.
- Nintendo-focused players: The device does not replace access to Nintendo exclusives.
- Anyone paying $599.99: At its regular price, compare current handheld alternatives and reconsider whether the Ally X’s extra hardware justifies its premium.
Check these details before purchasing
- Confirm that the listing is the standard white ROG Xbox Ally, not the ROG Xbox Ally X, original ROG Ally or ROG Ally X.
- Check whether the unit is new, refurbished, open-box or sold by a marketplace seller.
- Confirm the final checkout total after shipping and tax; a pre-tax price below $500 may exceed $500 at checkout.
- Verify that the Game Pass promotion is included and that you meet its eligibility requirements.
- Check the retailer’s return policy and whether the discount has an end date.
- Budget separately for storage, a case, dock, screen protector or power bank if you need them. Those additions can reduce the real savings.
Verdict
The December 2025 promotion made the standard ROG Xbox Ally substantially easier to recommend. At $489.99–$499.99, it became a credible sub-$500 Windows gaming handheld and a strong value for Game Pass users, portable PC gamers and buyers who accept moderate settings.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →At $599.99, the decision is much less automatic. The standard Ally remains lighter and cheaper than the Ally X, but its 16GB of memory and 512GB SSD are meaningful compromises. The reported sub-$500 price was a holiday promotion, not a permanent price cut, so shoppers should verify the current US listing rather than assume the deal is still active.
