Short answer: the Core i7-980X Area-51 was a genuine, extremely high-end Alienware gaming PC from 2010, but it is not a sensible modern gaming machine unless you want a restoration project, retro-gaming system, or historically significant Alienware chassis. Its present value depends far more on condition, completeness, cooling, storage, power supply, and collector appeal than on the original six-core processor.

The name refers primarily to a March 2010 HotHardware review of an original-generation Alienware Area-51. “Infused” does not appear to be a confirmed Dell retail model suffix.

What the name actually means

This was not a separate modern product line called the “Infused Gaming PC.” It was an original Alienware Area-51 desktop configured with Intel’s Core i7-980X, also known as the Gulftown processor. The reviewed machine belonged to the X58 and LGA1366 generation, before the later Area-51 R2 and subsequent systems.

That distinction matters. “Area-51” covers multiple generations with different sockets, chipsets, memory standards, and upgrade paths. The original X58 system should not be confused with the X99-based Area-51 R2, later Area-51 desktops, or Area-51m laptops.

Dell Alienware Area-51 AAT2250 Gaming Desktop - Intel Core Ultra 9 285K, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 32GB GDDR7, 64GB DDR5 RAM, 4TB SSD, Liquid Cooled, Wi-Fi 7, Windows 11 Home - Lunar Silver
  • Intel Core Ultra 9 285K 3.2GHz Processor
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 32GB GDDR7
  • 64GB DDR5-6400 RAM
  • 4TB Solid State Drive
  • 2.5GbE LAN; 2x2 Intel Killer WiFi 7 BE1750+Bluetooth 5.4

The Core i7-980X was a first-generation Core i7 Extreme processor for the LGA1366 platform. It had six physical cores, Hyper-Threading, and twelve logical threads, but no integrated graphics; a discrete graphics card was required. Intel’s compatibility documentation places the i7-9xx family on LGA1366 and confirms the processor-graphics limitation (socket compatibility; Extreme Edition graphics support).

The reviewed configuration

The following specifications describe HotHardware’s tested system, not every Area-51 sold during this period.

Component Tested configuration
Processor Intel Core i7-980X, 3.33 GHz, six cores
Cooling Alienware self-contained liquid cooling
Factory options Review listing included 3.8 GHz and 4 GHz factory-overclock options
Platform Intel X58-era ATX motherboard, LGA1366
Memory 6 GB DDR3-1333
Storage Two 1 TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 drives in RAID 0
Graphics Two ATI Radeon HD 5970 cards, each with 2 GB GDDR5, in CrossFireX

Power supply 1,100-watt multi-GPU-approved unit
Operating system Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Original price $1,999 base price; $4,569 as tested with keyboard and mouse

HotHardware’s specification and pricing pages contain slightly different as-tested price references, including approximately $4,419 on one page. The safest interpretation is that the system started at $1,999 and cost roughly $4,400–$4,600 in the particular configuration reviewed.

Why it was extraordinary in 2010

The i7-980X was a halo product at a time when six-core desktop processors were unusual and expensive. Compared with the quad-core systems used in the contemporary review, it delivered especially large gains in multithreaded arithmetic and multimedia workloads. HotHardware described the Area-51 as producing some of the fastest desktop benchmark results it had seen at the time.

The graphics configuration was equally excessive: two dual-GPU Radeon HD 5970 cards represented four graphics processors operating through CrossFireX. That could provide exceptional performance in supported games and resolutions of the period, although multi-GPU scaling was always dependent on game profiles and drivers. The liquid cooler, 1,100-watt power supply, Blu-ray burner, and oversized chassis reinforced the system’s luxury, no-compromise positioning.

  • Massive & Fast Storage: A 2TB NVMe PCIe Gen4 SSD provides ample space for your massive gaming library while delivering near-instant boot times and ultra-fast game loading.

The review also tested a stable 3.8 GHz configuration by adjusting the processor’s maximum Turbo Boost multiplier in BIOS. Those results are useful as historical evidence of the machine’s 2010 position, not as modern performance figures.

Design, case quality, and serviceability

The original Area-51’s large chassis was one of its strongest reasons to exist. HotHardware highlighted removable side panels, illuminated drive bays, quick-release storage mounting, substantial internal space, deliberate cable routing, and strong airflow planning. AlienFX lighting gave the case the distinctive visual identity associated with the Alienware brand.

That size can make restoration easier than working inside a compact modern desktop. There is room to inspect the motherboard, replace drives, clean the radiator, and work around full-length graphics cards. It also creates practical drawbacks: the tower is heavy, consumes considerable desk or floor space, and may require proprietary brackets, panels, drive caddies, lighting hardware, or connectors that are difficult to replace.

A surviving example should therefore be judged as both a computer and a collectible enclosure. A clean, complete case with intact side-panel latches, feet, drive cages, lighting, and original accessories may be more interesting than a cosmetically damaged machine containing slightly better replacement hardware.

How it performs today

The original system was exceptionally powerful for contemporary games, but its 2010 benchmark leadership should not be mistaken for current gaming capability. The six-core CPU remains adequate for older games, emulation targets, and ordinary desktop tasks, yet its single-threaded performance is obsolete beside modern processors.

The HD 5970 CrossFireX arrangement has aged even more severely. Modern games generally offer little useful multi-GPU support, and current driver, API, memory, and operating-system requirements can prevent older graphics hardware from working properly. Even if the cards still function, they are inefficient, hot, and unsuitable for many current releases.

Modern games may also fail for reasons unrelated to raw frame rate: missing instruction-set support, unavailable drivers, incompatible APIs, insufficient memory, or operating-system limitations. A 2010 review cannot establish how this machine performs in a 2026 game library.

What has aged badly

  • 6 GB of RAM: historically reasonable, but restrictive for modern software. The platform’s documented maximum for the Area-51/Area-51 ALX configuration was 12 GB.
  • RAID 0 hard drives: fast in aggregate for the period, but mechanically old and lacking redundancy. Failure of either drive can destroy the array.
  • Liquid cooling: pumps, tubing, fans, seals, and thermal compound are all potential failure points after more than a decade.
  • Graphics hardware: four-GPU CrossFireX is largely a historical curiosity now, with obsolete performance-per-watt and uncertain software support.
  • Power supply: an old 1,100-watt unit is not automatically safe simply because its original rating was high.
  • Operating-system support: the reviewed system shipped with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Do not assume official Windows 11 support for an LGA1366 platform. Microsoft’s supported-processor documentation concerns much newer processor generations, and technically installing an unsupported operating system is not the same as receiving official support or dependable drivers.

Buying one used: inspection checklist

Do not treat “it turns on” as proof that an old Area-51 is reliable. Before buying, request photographs of the interior, BIOS screen, service tag, cooling assembly, power supply, graphics cards, and storage arrangement.

  1. Confirm the processor in BIOS or Windows. Do not rely only on the seller’s title.
  2. Record the Dell service tag and identify the exact system variant.
  3. Check the BIOS revision and motherboard markings.
  4. Verify that the memory is recognized correctly and operates in the intended triple-channel arrangement.
  5. Check every hard drive individually, including SMART health, unusual noise, and bad sectors.
  6. Back up or replace the RAID 0 array before storing important data.
  7. Run a memory test and inspect boot reliability.
  8. Stress the CPU only while monitoring temperatures. Stop immediately if temperatures rise abnormally or the system shuts down.
  9. Inspect the pump, tubing, radiator, fans, and surrounding components for leaks, residue, or unusual noise.
  10. Test each graphics card separately, then verify the PCIe power connectors and power-supply behavior under load.
  11. Test USB, Ethernet, audio, optical drive, front-panel ports, lighting, and every drive bay.
  12. Inspect side-panel latches, feet, brackets, cable covers, AlienFX components, and original accessories.
  13. Ask whether the removed original parts are included. Replacement parts may be harder to source than the main components.

Upgrade priorities

1. Secure the data and replace RAID 0 storage

Do not preserve the original RAID 0 boot array as the only copy of anything important. Image it if the data matters, test the disks independently, and use a new SSD for a replacement installation. Dell’s documentation lists internal SATA RAID support, but it does not guarantee identical behavior with every modern SSD, controller mode, or replacement array.

2. Verify the BIOS before changing the processor

Dell support documentation records an important compatibility issue: some Area-51 systems did not recognize an upgraded Core i7-980X until BIOS revision A06 or later. If an advertised i7-980X system does not post or identify the processor, reinstall the original supported CPU if available, update the BIOS through Dell’s Drivers and Downloads process, load BIOS defaults, and then reinstall the 980X. The processor, socket, and motherboard should also be inspected for damage.

  • Marathon gaming unlocked: This high-performance technology ensures clean energy is consistently available, unleashing the top-level power of Intel Core Ultra 9 processor as you game, livestream, and multi-task for hours on end.
  • 240mm heat exchanger: The 240mm heat exchanger, available on the optional CPU liquid cooling, heightens thermal resistance, ensuring temperatures stay consistently low during longer gaming sessions.
  • Total command: Alienware Command Center software allows you to create and edit AlienFX lighting across the ecosystem, choose and monitor your performance mode across distinct power states, and create custom gaming profiles for your whole library.

Do not flash firmware casually on an unstable system. Use reliable power and follow the Dell procedure for the exact service tag or model.

3. Service the cooling system

Return BIOS settings to stock before diagnosing overheating. Check pump and fan operation, clean dust from the radiator, inspect for seepage, and replace thermal compound where appropriate. If the cooler’s condition is uncertain, budget for a replacement only after confirming bracket compatibility and case clearance.

4. Expand memory sensibly

Dell’s original documentation lists DDR3 at 1066, 1333, and 1600 MHz XMP speeds, three internally accessible DIMM sockets, and a documented 12 GB maximum for the Area-51/Area-51 ALX platform. Prefer a matched triple-channel kit, verify the motherboard’s density limits, and check BIOS recognition after installation. For retro gaming, a reliable 6–12 GB configuration is usually more sensible than paying a premium for rare modules.

5. Replace the graphics card only after checking the platform

A practical graphics upgrade normally means abandoning the original multi-GPU arrangement. Check card length, thickness, PCIe power connectors, power-supply age and rail condition, airflow, BIOS behavior, and CPU bottleneck. Physical installation is not proof of driver support or useful modern performance. Testing the replacement card in a known-good system—or testing a known-good card in the Area-51—can distinguish a graphics problem from a motherboard or power problem.

Common failure scenarios

The i7-980X is not recognized

The first suspect is an old BIOS, particularly a revision below A06. Other possibilities include incorrect installation, a damaged processor, socket damage, or motherboard failure. Revert to the original CPU if possible, update the BIOS, load defaults, and verify recognition again.

The RAID 0 array will not boot

A failed drive, corrupted metadata, changed controller mode, or loose SATA or power connection can prevent booting. Do not initialize or rebuild the array before attempting recovery. Test each drive independently and treat the array as unrecoverable without a backup. For a fresh installation, use a new SSD rather than recreating the old boot arrangement.

The computer overheats or shuts down

Possible causes include a failed pump, clogged radiator, dried thermal compound, fan failure, aggressive overclocking, or an aging power supply. Stop stress testing, return the system to stock settings, inspect the cooling loop, and replace suspect cooling or power components before further use.

A newer graphics card does not work

Insufficient or degraded power, missing PCIe connectors, firmware behavior, physical clearance, driver limitations, or a CPU bottleneck can all be involved. Test components separately rather than concluding immediately that the motherboard is defective.

Is it worth buying in 2026?

Buy it when:

  • You specifically want the original Alienware chassis and its visual design.
  • The machine is complete, operational, and priced as an old project rather than as a $4,000 gaming PC.
  • Your goal is retro gaming, restoration, display, or historical computing.
  • You are comfortable replacing storage, cooling parts, fans, memory, or graphics hardware.

Usually avoid it when:

  • You want modern AAA gaming with minimal troubleshooting.
  • The seller bases the price on the original $1,999–$4,569 figures.
  • The machine still depends on untested mechanical drives or an unverified liquid cooler.
  • Proprietary case parts are missing.
  • You need current operating-system support, low power consumption, or a warranty.

No reliable current market price should be inferred from the original retail price. A used system’s value is condition-dependent, and the cost of an SSD, cooling replacement, memory, graphics card, power supply, and operating-system solution can quickly exceed the value of the base machine.

The right buyer

The best buyer is a collector, retro gamer, or enthusiast who enjoys refurbishment and accepts compatibility risk. The wrong buyer is someone looking for the cheapest route to modern gaming performance. A newer used gaming desktop will generally provide better performance per watt, storage responsiveness, driver support, and upgrade value. A current Dell or Alienware gaming desktop is the more appropriate choice when warranty-backed support and current components matter.

In short, the Core i7-980X Area-51 deserves respect as a 2010 halo PC, not as a present-day performance bargain. Preserve it for what makes it distinctive—the chassis, history, and period hardware—or replace the platform entirely if the goal is modern gaming.
