The compact eGPU-and-dock is available as the GC34X with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU or the GC34R with an RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU. Both use Thunderbolt 5 rather than the proprietary connector found on older XG Mobile models.
The most important qualification is that the flagship unit contains an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, not the desktop GeForce RTX 5090. It could be an appealing upgrade for owners of compatible Thunderbolt 5 laptops and handheld PCs, but Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 users should compare its price and performance carefully before paying for hardware they cannot use at its full interface capability.

- ALL-NEW DESIGN - The XG Mobile’s MOSFET design cuts 150g of weight, maintains a 330W power profile, and ensures efficient, reliable performance.
The two versions are:
- GC34X: Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, 150W graphics power and 24GB of GDDR7 memory.
- GC34R: Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU, 115W graphics power and 12GB of GDDR7 memory.
Both versions combine graphics hardware, display outputs, networking, storage-card support, USB expansion and host charging in one enclosure.
It is not a desktop RTX 5090
The name “RTX 5090” can be misleading. The GC34X uses Nvidia’s RTX 5090 Laptop GPU. It is a 150W mobile GPU with 24GB of GDDR7 VRAM, not a removable desktop GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card.
That distinction affects power consumption, cooling, memory configuration and expected performance. Desktop RTX 5090 benchmark results should not be used as a direct estimate of what the ROG XG Mobile can deliver. Asus’s specifications establish the GPU model and power envelope, but the supplied material does not include independent gaming benchmarks, productivity tests, acoustic measurements, thermals or sustained-performance results.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe 24GB memory capacity may still matter for demanding creator, AI, rendering and ray-tracing workloads. For ordinary gaming, however, the decision should also account for the host computer, display resolution, refresh rate, connection standard and price difference between the two XG Mobile versions.

What Thunderbolt 5 changes
Thunderbolt 5 is the main architectural change. Asus advertises up to 120Gbps of throughput, double the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 4, along with support for 8K video and up to three 4K displays running at 144Hz simultaneously. The single cable can also provide up to 140W of Power Delivery 3.1 to a compatible host.
Those figures describe the interface’s capabilities, not guaranteed game performance. An eGPU still sends graphics data across an external connection, and results depend on the host controller, PCIe tunneling implementation, firmware, drivers, display routing and the workload itself.
For the most favorable setup, connect a compatible Thunderbolt 5 laptop or handheld, use the included Thunderbolt 5 cable, and attach an external monitor directly to the XG Mobile. Rendering the result back to the laptop’s internal display can introduce additional transport overhead. Multiple monitors and other high-bandwidth Thunderbolt devices can also affect available data bandwidth; Asus specifically warns that monitor configuration can change data-transfer performance.
A Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 host may work where Asus supports it, but it cannot provide the full Thunderbolt 5 link capability. USB4 is not automatically equivalent to Thunderbolt 5, and a USB-C-shaped port alone says nothing about eGPU support.
Ports and dock features
The XG Mobile is more than a graphics box. Both configurations include:

- DisplayPort 2.1.
- Standard SD card reader with UHS-II support up to 312MB/s.
- RJ-45 Ethernet.
- DC input.
- Aura Sync RGB lighting.
Asus lists the Ethernet controller as supporting 10/100/1000/2500/5000Mbps. This integrated connectivity changes the value calculation: buyers are paying for a premium eGPU and a compact one-cable desk dock. Someone who does not need networking, display outputs, USB ports or SD-card access may get better value from a conventional eGPU enclosure.
Compatibility is not universal USB-C support
Asus says the host must support at least Thunderbolt 4 or USB4, recommends an x86/x64 processor for best compatibility, and requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later for proper operation. The exact laptop or handheld must still appear on Asus’s compatibility list, and supported Asus and ROG systems may require particular BIOS versions.
Before buying, check the official Asus support guidance and compatibility information for the exact host model. Do not assume support for:
- Thunderbolt 3 systems.
- Generic USB-C ports without USB4.
- ARM-based Windows devices unless Asus explicitly lists the model.
- USB4 implementations without the required PCIe tunneling or firmware support.
- Older ROG Flow systems that rely on the proprietary XG Mobile connector.
The 2025 model is more broadly connected than earlier proprietary XG Mobile hardware, but that does not make older connectors, older laptops or every USB4 implementation equivalent.
Setup checklist
- Confirm the exact host appears on Asus’s compatibility list.
- Install Windows 11 24H2 or a later supported release.
- Update the host BIOS to the version Asus specifies.
- Update Armoury Crate or Armoury Crate SE. Asus support guidance lists Armoury Crate 6.1.18 or later and Armoury Crate SE 2.0.10 or later.
- Install current Nvidia graphics drivers through the supported Asus or Nvidia path.
- Connect the XG Mobile with its supplied Thunderbolt 5 cable.
- Connect the 330W AC adapter before testing full graphics and charging behavior.
- Reboot if the eGPU or dock functions do not appear.
- Test an external monitor connected directly to the XG Mobile before evaluating performance on the laptop’s internal display.
Menus and prompts can differ between laptops and handhelds, so this is a practical sequence rather than a promise that every supported model uses identical software steps.

- Black, comes with Cooling Fan and Screen Protection, Charger, Charging Cable and Instruction Manual
Portability comes with a power-brick trade-off
The enclosure measures 20.8 × 15.5 × 2.96cm and weighs 0.9kg. That is considerably easier to transport than a conventional desktop eGPU enclosure. However, the advertised weight is for the device alone. The complete travel kit also includes the 330W power adapter, power cord and Thunderbolt 5 cable.
In other words, it is portable, but it is not a lightweight charger-sized accessory. Frequent travelers should count the entire kit when comparing it with a gaming laptop or a handheld plus a conventional dock.
Price and availability
Pricing depends on country, configuration, stock and retailer. The Asus US product page showed a starting price of $1,299.99 when checked, but that figure should not automatically be treated as the price of the RTX 5090-equipped GC34X. Confirm the selected model at checkout on the official buying page.
Asus’s Canadian page showed C$2,099 when checked. These are regional snapshots, not a universal global price, and availability has not been synchronized across every country. Check local stock and the exact GPU configuration before making a purchase.

Buyers should expect the best results when:
- The host has Thunderbolt 5 rather than only Thunderbolt 4 or USB4.
- The monitor is connected directly to the XG Mobile.
- BIOS, firmware and drivers are current.
- Unnecessary high-bandwidth peripherals are disconnected.
- The host CPU is powerful enough for the workload.
- The workload benefits from GPU acceleration rather than being CPU-limited.
Do not interpret “120Gbps” as unrestricted desktop PCIe performance. EGPU transport overhead and display routing remain part of the system, and a TB5 link does not turn the mobile GPU inside the XG Mobile into a desktop RTX 5090.
Is the RTX 5090 model worth it?
Choose the GC34X if:
- You already own a compatible Thunderbolt 5 laptop or handheld.
- You specifically need the highest-capability portable option in the XG Mobile range.
- Your workloads can use 24GB of VRAM, CUDA, ray tracing, AI acceleration or GPU rendering.
- You value the integrated dock and one-cable desk setup.
- You accept paying a premium for portability over desktop performance per dollar.
Consider the GC34R if:
- Your host is limited to Thunderbolt 4 or USB4.
- You mainly play games and do not need 24GB of VRAM.
- The price gap to the GC34X is substantial.
- You want the dock features and an external GPU without targeting the flagship configuration.
Choose neither if:
- You have only Thunderbolt 3 or generic USB-C.
- You want a desktop GeForce RTX 5090 specifically.
- Your priority is maximum performance per dollar.
- You do not need a portable dock.
- A desktop PC, a conventional eGPU enclosure with a separate desktop GPU, or a laptop with a built-in high-end discrete GPU would suit you better.
A laptop with an integrated RTX 5080 or RTX 5090 Laptop GPU can also be simpler for mobile use because it avoids external-link overhead. A conventional desktop eGPU setup is less compact and less convenient, but it is modular and may offer better upgrade value.
Common problems and fixes
The XG Mobile is not detected
First confirm Windows 11 24H2 or later, the exact host-model listing, the required BIOS version, Armoury Crate updates, the supplied cable and AC power. Reboot after firmware or driver changes. If possible, test a monitor connected directly to the XG Mobile.
Graphics performance is lower than expected
Check whether the host is TB4 or USB4, whether the external monitor is connected directly to the eGPU, and whether the system is using the XG Mobile GPU rather than integrated graphics or an internal discrete GPU. Disconnect unnecessary high-bandwidth peripherals and update Nvidia drivers and the host BIOS. Do not compare the result directly with desktop RTX 5090 benchmarks.
The connection is intermittent
Treat intermittent crashes or disconnects first as a cable, firmware, driver or compatibility issue. Reinstall or update Armoury Crate and the graphics drivers, try another supported Thunderbolt or USB4 port if available, and check Asus support notices for the exact computer. The model-specific compatibility requirements mean it should not be treated as universally plug-and-play.
