Did Windows 11’s Next Big Update Improve Ryzen Gaming Performance? What 24H2 Really Changed

Windows 11 24H2 delivered real but conditional Ryzen gaming gains through a branch-prediction optimization. Here’s why the 10% claim is not universal—and why 2026’s next update remains unverified.

Yes—but the headline needs a date check. Windows 11 24H2 introduced a real AMD Ryzen branch-prediction optimization that improved performance in some CPU-limited games. Independent testing found gains of roughly 10% on average in certain 1080p game suites, with larger increases in some titles and little change—or occasional regressions—in others.

That improvement was not exclusive to Windows 11 24H2. Microsoft and AMD also made the relevant optimization available to Windows 11 23H2 through KB5041587. As of 2026, there is no comparable public evidence that the next Windows 11 release will deliver another broad Ryzen-specific FPS increase.

While evaluating Windows gaming changes, Outbyte PC Repair can scan settings and background load that may affect overall system responsiveness.

The short version

  • Real improvement: Yes, Windows 11 24H2 improved Ryzen performance in selected CPU-limited games.
  • Universal 10% FPS increase: No. Results varied by game, CPU, GPU, resolution and system configuration.
  • Exclusive to 24H2: No. The main branch-prediction optimization was backported to Windows 11 23H2 in KB5041587.
  • Applies to every Ryzen processor: No. The strongest evidence concerns Zen 3, Zen 4 and Zen 5.
  • Proven for the next 2026 release: No. Current Microsoft material does not verify another uplift of similar scale.

Which Windows update was responsible?

The original reports concerned Windows 11 24H2, which was the forthcoming major release during the 2024 testing cycle. Early benchmarks showed unexpectedly large gains on several Ryzen processors. AMD subsequently identified the relevant change as a branch-prediction optimization.

Microsoft later backported the optimization to Windows 11 23H2 through optional update KB5041587. AMD expected performance from patched 23H2 to be similar to performance from 24H2. That makes an important distinction: upgrading from 23H2 to 24H2 was not strictly necessary solely to obtain this Ryzen gaming improvement.

By 2026, 24H2 is an established Windows release rather than an upcoming one. The forward-looking discussion now concerns Windows 11 26H1 and the developing 26H2 cycle. Microsoft’s 26H1 documentation describes platform and 2026-silicon improvements, but it does not establish another general Ryzen gaming-performance boost.

What did Microsoft and AMD actually improve?

Branch prediction is one of the ways a modern CPU keeps its instruction pipeline busy. Software frequently reaches conditional decisions—such as whether to take one code path or another. Rather than waiting for the decision every time, the processor predicts the likely path and begins working on it.

A correct prediction saves time. A wrong prediction means that speculative work must be discarded and the processor has to recover, creating wasted work and stalls. The Windows change improved how Ryzen’s branch-prediction behavior was used during ordinary Windows operation.

This should not be described as a frequency increase, a new CPU architecture or a universal scheduler redesign. Public reporting identifies branch prediction as the relevant mechanism, but the detailed implementation has not been fully documented publicly. The safest interpretation is that Windows corrected or improved a software path affecting existing Ryzen hardware rather than adding silicon performance.

Which Ryzen processors benefit?

The reported benefit is concentrated on AMD’s Zen 3, Zen 4 and Zen 5 architectures:

  • Zen 3: Ryzen 5000 desktop and mobile families.
  • Zen 4: Ryzen 7000 desktop and mobile families.
  • Zen 5: Ryzen 9000 desktop processors and related Zen 5 products.

That does not mean every processor carrying a Ryzen label receives the same uplift. Results depend on the CPU microarchitecture, game engine, graphics API, GPU, resolution, graphics settings, BIOS, chipset driver and Windows configuration. Evidence for older Zen and Zen+ processors is not strong enough to generalize the result to all AMD CPUs. Testing coverage of older Ryzen generations should therefore be read as model-specific evidence, not a guarantee for every system.

How large is the performance gain?

There is no single FPS number that applies to all Ryzen owners. Hardware Unboxed’s broad testing found approximately 10% average improvement in some 1080p game suites on processors including the Ryzen 7 7700X and Ryzen 7 9700X. Individual games could gain considerably more, while others showed modest improvement, no measurable difference or a possible loss.

The phrase “up to 10% faster” is therefore safer than “Ryzen gets 10% more FPS.” Even that figure must be tied to the test suite, processor, resolution and game selection. A single title is not representative of the entire PC gaming library.

  • Processor provides dependable and fast execution of tasks with maximum efficiency.Graphics Frequency : 2200 MHZ.Number of CPU Cores : 8. Maximum Operating Temperature (Tjmax) : 89°C.
  • Ryzen 7 product line processor for better usability and increased efficiency

  • Octa-core (8 Core) processor core allows multitasking with great reliability and fast processing speed
  • 8 MB L2 plus 96 MB L3 cache memory provides excellent hit rate in short access time enabling improved system performance

The effect is most visible when the CPU is limiting frame rate—for example, in high-refresh-rate gaming at 1080p with a powerful graphics card. At 1440p and especially 4K, the GPU more often becomes the bottleneck, hiding much of any CPU-side improvement.

Games with heavy main-thread workloads, including some competitive, simulation, strategy, MMO and large-world titles, are more likely to expose a CPU optimization. Ray-traced games, GPU-bound workloads and systems with entry-level graphics cards are less likely to show a substantial change.

Why did some benchmarks show unusually large gains?

Benchmark conditions can make a CPU improvement look either dramatic or invisible. The most important variables include:

  • Resolution and settings: 720p and 1080p testing with a fast GPU magnifies CPU differences; 1440p and 4K often shift the limit to the GPU.
  • Security configuration: HVCI, also known as Memory Integrity, and other virtualization-based security settings can affect performance.
  • Account type: The built-in Windows Administrator account was relevant to pre-patch behavior reported by multiple outlets.
  • Software versions: BIOS releases, chipset drivers, graphics drivers, Windows builds and game patches can all change results.
  • Test cleanliness: Background applications, power settings and a clean installation can materially affect frame times.

ComputerBase’s analysis specifically discussed whether differences in HVCI and Memory Integrity settings contributed to unusually large results in some 23H2-versus-24H2 comparisons. That is an important caveat, not a settled explanation for every conflicting benchmark.

For independent comparisons, the useful measurements are average FPS and 1% lows, recorded across multiple games with identical drivers, BIOS settings, memory configuration, security state and game versions.

Is 24H2 better than 23H2 for Ryzen gaming?

24H2 without the backported patch contained the optimization. Patched 23H2 was expected to perform similarly. In practical terms:

  • Windows 11 24H2 included the relevant code path.
  • Windows 11 23H2 received it through KB5041587.
  • A complete 24H2 upgrade was not required just for this performance change.

That does not make the two Windows versions identical in every respect. A major release can change security behavior, compatibility, drivers and features independently of the Ryzen optimization. The distinction simply prevents the misleading conclusion that every Ryzen owner had to install 24H2 to unlock the reported FPS gains. Tom’s Hardware’s reporting also documents the backport.

What about Windows 11’s 2026 updates?

Current Windows 11 2026 announcements should not be treated as proof of a repeat performance windfall. Microsoft’s public material discusses platform changes, support for newer silicon and gaming features, but the gathered evidence does not verify another broad Ryzen-specific frame-rate uplift comparable to the 24H2 branch-prediction change.

One example is Advanced Shader Delivery. It aims to reduce shader-compilation work and improve game startup or loading behavior. Microsoft’s testing involved an AMD Radeon RX 7600 and Ryzen 7 5800, but that does not mean it is a general Ryzen CPU FPS optimization.

These are different bottlenecks:

  • Branch prediction: CPU instruction-execution efficiency.
  • Advanced Shader Delivery: shader availability, compilation and loading behavior.
  • Graphics-driver updates: GPU rendering and frame-time behavior.

So the accurate 2026 conclusion is not that the next Windows update will improve Ryzen gaming. It is that the claim remains unverified until Microsoft, AMD or repeatable independent testing demonstrates it.

What Ryzen owners should do today

  1. Check your Windows version through Settings → System → About, or press Win + R, enter winver and press Enter.
  2. Install the latest cumulative update offered for your supported Windows release. Do not treat KB5041587 as a newly discovered 2026 requirement; it was the historical 23H2 backport.
  3. Update AMD chipset and graphics drivers using AMD’s official software channels.
  4. Update motherboard firmware when release notes address stability, compatibility or a relevant processor issue. Do not assume a Windows update can solve a firmware problem.
  5. Benchmark before and after any update using the same game version, graphics driver, BIOS settings, resolution, upscaling, frame generation, power plan and background applications.
  6. Prefer a repeatable built-in game benchmark. Test several games and record both average FPS and 1% lows.
  7. If an optional preview update causes instability, use Windows’ available uninstall or recovery options rather than assuming the regression is a hardware fault.

Do not change HVCI, Memory Integrity or other security settings merely to chase a benchmark number without understanding the security trade-off. If you compare results, document those settings clearly.

Should you buy a new Ryzen processor because of this?

No—not because of this Windows optimization alone. The update can provide a free performance improvement on a compatible system, but it is conditional and game-dependent. A CPU upgrade should be based on a measured CPU bottleneck, target frame rate, existing platform costs and the games you actually play. A GPU upgrade may matter more at 1440p or 4K, while neither upgrade will fix a problem caused by shader compilation, storage, thermals, incorrect memory settings or network latency.

For a CPU-limited Ryzen 5000, 7000 or 9000 system, the sensible order is to update supported software, verify configuration and measure performance before spending money. The Windows change is worthwhile as normal maintenance; it is not, by itself, a reason to replace otherwise adequate hardware.

Bottom line

Windows 11 24H2 really did improve Ryzen gaming performance in selected CPU-limited scenarios, mainly through a branch-prediction optimization affecting Zen 3, Zen 4 and Zen 5. Some 1080p test suites gained around 10% on average, but individual results varied sharply and GPU-limited gaming often showed little benefit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The optimization was also backported to Windows 11 23H2 through KB5041587, so “install 24H2 for 10% more FPS” is an incomplete description. In 2026, there is no verified equivalent Ryzen-specific uplift for the next Windows release. Treat the 24H2 result as real but conditional—not as a universal free upgrade or a reason to buy a new CPU.
