The ASUS ROG XREAL R1 is a tethered gaming display in glasses form, not a literal 171-inch screen. ASUS and XREAL say its dual micro-OLED displays can create a virtual screen equivalent to up to 171 inches when viewed from roughly four meters away, with refresh rates reaching 240Hz.
That makes the R1 potentially compelling for ROG Ally owners, high-frame-rate PC players and travelers who want a large private display. It is less convincing as a standalone AR or VR computer, a universal console accessory or an all-day productivity monitor.

What is the ASUS ROG XREAL R1?
The ROG XREAL R1 is a collaboration between ASUS Republic of Gamers and XREAL. It works as a wearable external display for a connected handheld, PC, console or other compatible source device.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The glasses contain dual 1920×1080 micro-OLED displays and use XREAL’s X1 chip for spatial-screen features. They do not run PC or console games independently. The source device still supplies the game, processing power and frame rate, while the R1 provides the private virtual display.
#1 Best Overall
ASUS announced the glasses at CES on January 5, 2026. ASUS later announced global preorder availability on May 15, with worldwide shipping scheduled to begin June 1, 2026. Those dates describe the companies’ announced rollout; stock, pricing and availability can vary by country.
What does the “171-inch display” claim mean?
The R1 does not contain a physical 171-inch panel, and people nearby will not see a floating television-sized image. The number describes an up-to-171-inch-equivalent virtual screen viewed from approximately four meters away.
ASUS and XREAL specify a field of view of up to 57 degrees and claim that the image covers approximately 95% of the focused viewing area. In practical terms, the glasses make a game appear on a large private screen in front of the wearer. The perceived size depends on the viewing mode, fit, eye position and the user’s tolerance for the optics.
That is useful for playing in a hotel room, on a flight or in another space where carrying a large monitor is impractical. It should not be compared directly with buying a 171-inch television.

How useful is 240Hz?
ASUS and XREAL describe the R1 as the first 240Hz micro-OLED gaming AR glasses. A 240Hz display can make fast movement look clearer and can reduce display-side persistence blur when the connected hardware is producing sufficiently high frame rates.
It does not guarantee 240 frames per second. A demanding game running at 60, 90 or 120fps cannot provide the same benefit as a game rendered near 240fps. The result depends on the handheld or PC, the game, graphics settings, output standard, dock and cable.
The advertised 0.01ms figure is a manufacturer display-response specification. It is not the same as total system latency, which also includes game rendering, the source device, signal processing and input response. ASUS and XREAL discuss other latency measurements separately, so the numbers should not be treated as interchangeable.
There is also a practical compromise: XREAL’s R1 FAQ says text may appear slightly blurry at 240Hz. For reading menus, desktop text or documents, a lower refresh mode may be preferable. The R1 is therefore more clearly optimized for gaming motion than for fine-text productivity.
ROG Ally setup and integration
ASUS describes the R1’s connection to a compatible ROG Ally as a single-cable, plug-and-play experience. Connect the glasses to the Ally’s compatible USB-C video-output port, allow the external display to initialize, then select the desired display and refresh settings.
Rank #2
- Immersive Display Experience: Up to a 100-inch display with 1,100 nits brightness and 95% DCI-P3 color gamut for vivid, lifelike details.
- Productivity on the Go: Multi-screen work anywhere with Type-C notebook compatibility in a versatile, lightweight design.
- Enhanced Gaming Integration: Seamlessly integrate with ROG Ally for superior visuals and gaming performance.
- Versatile Functionality: The AirVision App supports multi-screen setups, screen distance adjustment, and pupil distance customization.
- Versatile and Lightweight Design: Weighing just 87g with built-in speakers, noise-canceling mic, and high transparency for safety.
The Ally’s built-in screen remains available for adjusting settings such as brightness, screen size, aspect ratio and visual effects without interrupting gameplay. Users can also choose between Anchor mode, which keeps the virtual screen in a stable position, and Follow mode, which keeps it aligned with the wearer’s view.
- Update the Ally, glasses and related ASUS/XREAL software or firmware.
- Connect the R1 directly to a USB-C port that supports video output.
- Confirm that the glasses are recognized as an external display.
- Adjust brightness, screen size, aspect ratio and refresh rate.
- Choose Anchor or Follow mode for the preferred viewing behavior.
Support can differ between Ally generations and firmware versions, so the current ASUS and XREAL documentation matters more than a blanket claim that every Ally behaves identically.
PC and console compatibility
For PCs and consoles, the ROG Control Dock provides HDMI and DisplayPort connectivity. A typical setup requires the source device, the dock, the glasses connection and potentially external power.
USB-C alone is not enough. A USB-C port may support charging and data while lacking DisplayPort video output. Before buying, check:
- Does the source device output video through USB-C?
- If not, does it offer compatible HDMI or DisplayPort output?
- Is the ROG Control Dock required?
- Does the dock need external power in the chosen setup?
- Can the source device and game deliver the desired resolution and refresh rate?
- Are the required firmware, drivers and display utilities installed?
PC users can use ROG DisplayWidget Center where supported to adjust brightness, contrast, refresh rate and multiscreen settings. Console support is still constrained by the console’s output capabilities; 240Hz should not be assumed on every PlayStation or Xbox setup.
What do Anchor, Follow and 3DoF do?
Anchor mode keeps the virtual screen positioned in a stable location as the wearer moves their head. Follow mode keeps the screen aligned with the wearer’s view. Native 3DoF tracks rotational head movement, helping the screen feel spatially positioned instead of simply fixed to the glasses.
These features do not turn the R1 into a full room-scale VR headset. It remains primarily a tethered display accessory with spatial-screen functions. The glasses also support real-time 2D-to-3D conversion, but that does not mean every game becomes native stereoscopic 3D. Games or media authored for true stereoscopic presentation remain a different case.
Other features worth knowing
- Electrochromic dimming: The lenses can tint automatically or on demand, changing how much of the surrounding environment remains visible.
- HDR: ASUS lists HDR support through the ROG Control Dock. Actual results depend on the source, connection and content.
- Audio: The glasses carry “Sound by Bose” branding. That is not the same as being a Bose headphone or a guarantee of dedicated-headset performance.
- Prescription support: Prescription lens options are advertised through the official store or authorized partners, but availability and pricing vary by region.
- Weight: XREAL lists the glasses at approximately 91g. Fit, nose comfort, lens alignment and tolerance for wearing a tethered device can matter more than the number alone.
Who should consider the R1?
The R1 makes the most sense for:
- ROG Ally or compatible handheld owners who want a much larger private screen.
- PC gamers with hardware capable of exploiting high refresh rates.
- Travelers who want an immersive display without carrying a television or monitor.
- Players who prefer a spatially anchored screen while sitting or reclining.
- People who want private gaming in a shared room.
It is a weaker fit for:
- Anyone expecting a standalone VR or AR computer.
- Users who mainly read small text, work in spreadsheets or need an all-day monitor.
- Console owners unwilling to manage a dock, cables and possible external power.
- People sensitive to eye strain, binocular alignment, lens fit or image blur.
- Buyers whose USB-C ports do not support video output.
- Owners of an existing XREAL display who do not need 240Hz gaming performance.
Bottom line
The ASUS ROG XREAL R1 is best understood as a premium private gaming monitor you wear. Its virtual 171-inch-equivalent screen, 240Hz maximum refresh rate, 3DoF features and ROG Ally integration could be excellent for the right enthusiast, particularly one who values portability and high-frame-rate gaming.
But the headline specifications do not remove the practical requirements. The R1 needs a compatible source device, video-capable connection, appropriate cables and sometimes the ROG Control Dock. It cannot create 240fps from a slower game, its 0.01ms figure is not total latency, and its 171-inch claim is a virtual viewing comparison rather than a physical display. Check compatibility, fit and current regional pricing before treating it as a replacement for a conventional monitor, television or standalone headset.
