No reliable evidence supports that claim. As of August 18, 2026, Sony has not announced the price, launch timing, final name, or specifications of its next-generation PlayStation platform. Microsoft has confirmed that Project Helix is in development, but it has not announced a consumer price or final retail configuration. A PS6 costing exactly half as much as the next Xbox remains a speculative scenario, not a supported forecast.
What the “half as much” claim would require
An exact two-to-one price gap would mean combinations such as a $600 PS6 and a $1,200 Xbox, or a $700 PS6 and a $1,400 Xbox. Nothing publicly confirmed by either company points to those figures.

The claim could become plausible only if Sony launches an aggressively priced base model while Microsoft launches a substantially more expensive premium or PC-like device. It could also result from comparing a digital-only PS6 with a disc-equipped Xbox, or a basic PlayStation with Microsoft’s most powerful model. Those would not be like-for-like comparisons.

In its investor Q&A, Sony said the timing and pricing of its next-generation platform have not been decided. It also expects elevated memory prices and tight supply-demand conditions to remain a concern through 2027. Sony said it is considering hardware-cost reductions, promotional spending, go-to-market strategy, and possible business-model changes together rather than simply passing every cost increase directly to buyers. Sony’s investor Q&A is the primary source for those statements.
That leaves several possible strategies: a digital-only base model, a smaller SSD, a lower-performance entry model, a later launch after component prices improve, or lower hardware margins supported by software and network revenue. Analysts have speculated about a disc-free PS6 and launch timing as late as 2028, but those are not confirmed specifications. TechRadar’s report attributes those ideas to analysts rather than Sony.
What Microsoft has confirmed about the next Xbox
Microsoft calls its next-generation project Project Helix. The company says it is developing the hardware with AMD, targeting advances in rendering and simulation, and plans to provide alpha hardware to developers beginning in 2027. Microsoft has also discussed technology related to FSR Next.

However, Microsoft has not announced a consumer launch date, final product name, price, specifications, or retail configuration. Its announcement presents Xbox as a broader ecosystem spanning console hardware, Windows, PC gaming, Xbox Play Anywhere, and cloud services. That means “the next Xbox” may eventually describe a family of devices rather than one living-room console. See Microsoft’s Project Helix announcement and its earlier AMD partnership announcement.
A higher-priced Xbox is therefore possible. Microsoft could choose a larger or more powerful AMD system-on-chip, more memory, a larger SSD, stronger ray-tracing or AI-upscaling hardware, or a PC-like architecture. It could also sell hardware with less subsidy. But the official announcement does not establish that any of those choices will produce a console twice the price of a PS6.
Why the rumor sounds plausible
Component costs are moving the discussion away from the traditional expectation that every new console will launch near the previous generation’s price. Sony’s current U.S. recommended prices, effective April 2, 2026, are $599.99 for the PS5 Digital Edition, $649.99 for the standard PS5, and $899.99 for the PS5 Pro. Sony’s pricing notice confirms those figures.

Microsoft also announced another worldwide Xbox price update effective August 1, 2026, after earlier U.S. increases of $20 to $70. The company has said consoles are traditionally sold at or below manufacturing cost, but the update does not forecast Project Helix pricing. Microsoft’s price-update announcement is current-generation context, not evidence of a $1,200 or $1,400 next Xbox.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Those reports are useful as evidence of cost pressure, not as official price forecasts. A bill of materials is not a retail price: packaging, distribution, marketing, warranty costs, retailer margins, taxes, currency movements, and the manufacturer’s subsidy or profit decision all affect the final price. See the coverage from PC Gamer and TechSpot for the distinction between estimates and confirmed information.
Possible pricing scenarios
| Scenario | What it could mean | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Both launch as traditional subsidized consoles | Prices could be relatively close, with an ordinary premium or discount for different specifications. | More plausible than a two-to-one split |
| Xbox launches as a premium device | A more powerful or PC-like Xbox could cost materially more than a base PS6. | Plausible, but unconfirmed |
| Sony launches a low-cost digital base model | PS6 could be meaningfully cheaper than a disc-equipped or premium Xbox. | Plausible, but unconfirmed |
| Microsoft launches multiple devices | One Xbox could be affordable while another is substantially more expensive. | Important possibility |
| PS6 at $600 and Xbox at $1,200 or more | The headline’s exact two-to-one relationship would be achieved. | Possible in theory, unsupported today |
Why historical comparisons do not prove the ratio
The PS4 and Xbox One launched in 2013 with different prices and configurations. In the current generation, the PS5 and Xbox Series X both launched in the United States at $499, while the Xbox Series S occupied a lower tier. The comparison was shaped by storage, performance, disc drives, and bundled accessories—not just brand positioning.

- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
The Federal Trade Commission’s market analysis identifies the PS5 and Xbox Series X as $499 launch competitors. That filing is useful historical context, but it cannot determine next-generation pricing.
Current prices are equally poor as a formula. A $649.99 PS5 does not imply a $1,299.98 Xbox, and the $899.99 PS5 Pro is a premium model rather than a normal baseline for the PS6. New-generation prices will depend on specifications, production yields, memory availability, exchange rates, regional taxes, launch timing, and how aggressively each company subsidizes hardware.

How to judge future claims
- Check the source. Official company statements carry more weight than named analysts, which carry more weight than anonymous leaks, YouTube thumbnails, or social-media posts.
- Compare equivalent configurations. Match base models with base models, storage tiers with storage tiers, and disc-equipped systems with disc-equipped systems.
- Define the price. Distinguish MSRP from retail discounts, bundles, subscription financing, taxes, and accessory costs.
- Identify the hardware strategy. A subsidized console, enthusiast system, PC-like device, and multi-device portfolio should not be treated as the same product.
- Check the date. A 2027 launch would face different memory and semiconductor conditions from a 2028 or 2029 launch. Sony has specifically warned that memory conditions may remain difficult through 2027.
What would have to happen for the claim to become true?
Sony would need to choose an aggressively priced digital or lower-spec base PS6, potentially accepting thin hardware margins and relying on software, accessories, and subscriptions for revenue. Microsoft would need to launch a substantially more expensive premium device, use a costlier hardware design, and either decline significant subsidy or target a smaller enthusiast audience.

Microsoft’s cheaper Xbox device, if one exists, would also need to be excluded from the comparison. Otherwise, “the next Xbox” would not have one meaningful price. Regional taxes, currency conversion, tariffs, storage, disc drives, and bundles could further change the apparent ratio.
What to watch next
- Official Sony announcements about platform timing, model tiers, and disc-drive policy.
- Microsoft disclosures about Project Helix developer hardware and whether Xbox becomes a multi-device portfolio.
- AMD information about semi-custom technology, without treating alleged chip specifications as confirmed.
- Evidence of multiple Xbox SKUs or a PC-like retail device.
- Memory pricing and supply conditions through the expected development period.
- Official product pages, retailer listings, certifications, and preorders—not unverified social-media leaks.
Verdict
The PS6 could be cheaper than Microsoft’s next Xbox, especially if Microsoft prioritizes premium performance or a broader PC-like hardware strategy. But there is currently no reliable evidence that Sony’s console will cost exactly half as much.
The defensible conclusion is therefore “possible, but unsupported.” Until Sony and Microsoft reveal comparable products and official prices, a two-to-one PS6-versus-Xbox prediction is speculation rather than a credible forecast.
