Verdict: The 2024 ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 remains one of the best premium compact gaming laptops for buyers who want an OLED display, excellent speakers, a comfortable keyboard, and a genuinely portable Windows machine. Its RTX 4060 and RTX 4070 GPUs are capable, but both are limited to up to 90W, so this is not the fastest gaming laptop in its class. In 2026, buy it for its balance and refinement—not for maximum frames per second—and only when clearance pricing makes sense.
What is the 2024 Zephyrus G14?
The 2024 Zephyrus G14, commonly identified by the GA403 family name, is a redesigned 14-inch gaming laptop. Compared with the thicker 2023 GA402 generation, it is slimmer, lighter, more understated, and built around a high-resolution OLED display.

Regional configurations vary, so check the exact SKU before buying. ASUS sold versions with AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS or Ryzen 9 8945HS processors and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050, RTX 4060, or RTX 4070 graphics. The discrete GPUs operate at up to 90W with Dynamic Boost—an important detail that makes the G14’s GPU labels less informative than they appear on a store page.

Design and portability
The G14’s aluminum chassis is approximately 0.63 inches thick and weighs about 3.31 pounds, or 1.5kg, depending on configuration. That makes it substantially easier to carry than most 15- or 16-inch gaming laptops.
Its restrained styling also works in classrooms, offices, and professional environments. There is no oversized rear section or aggressively decorated chassis competing for attention. The compact design is practical rather than merely attractive: a student can carry it daily, and a frequent traveler can use it as a work laptop without bringing a second machine.
The trade-off is cooling and power headroom. A larger laptop can run a similarly named GPU at a higher wattage for longer. The G14 should therefore be compared with other genuinely portable laptops, not with thick RTX 4070 or RTX 4080 systems.
The OLED display is the main reason to buy it
The 14-inch, 16:10 OLED panel is the G14’s defining feature. It has a 2880×1800 resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, a quoted 0.2ms response time, 100% DCI-P3 coverage, G-SYNC support, and VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 support. Dolby Vision is also listed in independent configuration data.
In everyday use, the panel delivers deep blacks, excellent perceived contrast, vivid color, sharp text, and fast motion response. The 16:10 aspect ratio provides more vertical space for documents, timelines, code, and web pages than a conventional 16:9 gaming screen. It is a much better productivity and entertainment display than the average budget gaming laptop panel.
The caveat is that 2880×1800 is demanding for laptop RTX 4060 and 90W RTX 4070 graphics. In demanding games, the sensible approach is to use 1920×1200 or 2560×1600, DLSS, or another upscaling mode rather than insisting on native resolution and maximum settings.

OLED pixels can suffer image retention and permanent burn-in. Static taskbars, application interfaces, desktop elements, and game HUDs are the relevant risks for a laptop used for many hours each day. ASUS provides OLED Care and automatic Pixel Refresh behavior, but those features reduce the risk rather than eliminate it.
- Enable the available OLED-care and pixel-refresh features.
- Use automatic screen-off and sleep timers.
- Avoid leaving bright, static content on screen for hours.
- Use an external monitor for a stationary workstation if you prefer to minimize OLED wear.
For mixed gaming, media, and productivity use, the OLED panel is a major advantage. For a work computer displaying the same application interface all day, an LCD alternative may be easier to live with.
Gaming performance: strong for the size, not class-leading
The most important performance fact is not simply “RTX 4070.” It is “RTX 4070 at up to 90W in a thin 14-inch chassis.” Tom’s Hardware found that the RTX 4070 model could be comparable to, or beaten by, larger laptops using higher-wattage RTX 4060 graphics. That is the price of the G14’s portability.
The RTX 4060 model is well suited to 1080p or 1200p gaming and can handle some 1600p gaming with upscaling. The RTX 4070 provides additional headroom, but its advantage is narrower than the GPU name suggests because both options are power-constrained.
- RTX 4050: Buy only at a steep discount if portability and the OLED display matter more than demanding-game performance.
- RTX 4060: The sensible value choice for most buyers.
- RTX 4070: Consider it when the price premium is small, especially if it comes with 32GB of RAM.
Competitive games are a good match for the 120Hz panel, although players focused exclusively on esports may prefer a larger laptop with a 165Hz or 240Hz screen. For modern AAA games, expect to adjust settings and use DLSS or frame generation where supported.
When comparing laptops, look beyond the GPU name. Check the GPU power limit, CPU, display resolution, game settings, upscaling mode, frame-generation status, and whether the machine was plugged in and using its highest performance profile.

CPU and everyday productivity
The Ryzen 9 8945HS is an eight-core, 16-thread processor with boost speeds up to 5.2GHz and an integrated AI engine. It is more than capable for office work, programming, photo editing, moderate video editing, streaming, multitasking, and gaming alongside the discrete GPU.
The Ryzen AI hardware is a useful technical feature, but it should not be the reason to buy this laptop. Its practical value depends on application and operating-system support. The G14’s real strengths remain its conventional CPU/GPU performance, screen, portability, and input devices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKeyboard, touchpad, speakers, and webcam
This is where the G14 earns its all-rounder reputation. Independent testing from RTINGS describes a comfortable keyboard, responsive touchpad, loud and full-sounding speakers, and a usable 1080p webcam.
The speakers are particularly valuable on a 14-inch laptop, where small chassis dimensions often produce thin sound. The keyboard and touchpad are suitable for normal work as well as gaming, while the webcam is practical for video calls rather than being an afterthought.
Ports and connectivity
For a compact laptop, the port selection is strong:
- HDMI 2.1
- Two USB-C ports with DisplayPort support
- One USB4 Type-C port
- USB Power Delivery input on the appropriate USB-C port
- Two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports
- UHS-II microSD card reader
- 3.5mm audio jack
- Wi-Fi 6E
This supports external monitors, cameras, wired peripherals, fast removable storage, and desktop docking without requiring a large dongle collection. USB-C charging is useful for light-duty travel, but it does not replace the full 180W adapter during sustained gaming or demanding creative work.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Thermals, noise, and performance modes
ASUS uses liquid-metal thermal compound, improved heatpipes, second-generation Arc Flow fans, and a tri-fan cooling design. RTINGS found minimal thermal throttling in its assessment, but that should not be interpreted as a universal result for every BIOS version, ambient temperature, or fan profile.
Armoury Crate’s performance and fan modes change the balance between noise, temperature, battery life, and speed. Quiet or battery modes are not representative of maximum plugged-in gaming performance. Use the laptop on a hard, unobstructed surface; bedding and other soft surfaces can block intake vents.
Even when internal throttling is controlled, the compact chassis can become hot externally and the fans can become audible. That is an unavoidable trade-off when placing this level of gaming hardware in a 1.5kg machine. Drivers, Windows updates, BIOS updates, and regional component differences can also affect results.
Battery life and charging
The G14 has a 73Wh battery, and ASUS advertises charging from 0% to 50% in 30 minutes. Real-world endurance is good for a gaming laptop but not reliably all-day: Tom’s Hardware recorded 6 hours 45 minutes in a web-browsing, OpenGL, and video-streaming test at 150 nits, while RTINGS summarizes roughly eight hours of light use and about seven hours of video playback.
Actual results depend on brightness, refresh rate, GPU mode, background software, and the workload. Light browsing and office work are realistic away from a socket. Heavy CPU/GPU work and gaming are not. Plan to carry the 180W charger for sustained performance.
Upgradeability and long-term ownership
The soldered RAM is the G14’s most important long-term limitation. Maximum listed memory is 32GB, and buyers cannot add more later. The 16GB model is acceptable for gaming, office work, and ordinary creative use, but it offers less flexibility for a multi-year purchase.
Choose 32GB at purchase if you expect to use large codebases, virtual machines, 4K video-editing projects, 3D applications, local AI tools, or heavy browser multitasking. The replaceable SSD is welcome, but a 1TB drive can fill quickly after Windows, applications, and several large games are installed.

Which configuration should you buy?
Best overall choice: Ryzen 9 8945HS, RTX 4060, and 32GB of RAM if available at a sensible discount. The RTX 4060 is generally the value sweet spot, while 32GB addresses the laptop’s non-upgradable memory.
Choose the RTX 4070/32GB model when its premium is modest and you want additional GPU headroom for demanding games or creative work. Do not pay a large premium merely because the label says RTX 4070; the 90W limit reduces the gap compared with higher-power laptops.
Be cautious with 16GB models at premium prices. They can be perfectly usable today, but the soldered memory makes them a weaker long-term purchase.
2024 G14 versus newer and competing laptops
Against the 2023 Zephyrus G14
The 2024 model is thinner and more refined and adds the OLED display, but it is not an automatic gaming-performance upgrade over the previous generation. Existing 2023 owners should upgrade mainly for the display, design, speakers, and everyday experience—not simply for more frames per second. Windows Central’s comparison reaches a similar conclusion.
Against a larger gaming laptop
A larger machine can deliver higher GPU power limits, better sustained performance, more cooling capacity, greater upgradeability, and sometimes a lower price. Choose the G14 when daily portability and overall refinement matter more than performance per dollar.

Against the Razer Blade 14
The Razer Blade 14 is a relevant premium alternative with a metal chassis and similarly portable concept. The G14’s case is stronger when you value its OLED display, speakers, and launch-era value; the Blade may appeal to buyers who prioritize its industrial design and are willing to pay more. Current 2026 pricing varies and should be checked before purchase.
Against the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 14
The Legion Slim 5 14 is worth considering for buyers who want a potentially lower-cost compact gaming laptop and can accept differences in chassis quality, display, speakers, and portability. The G14 remains the more polished all-rounder.
Against newer G14 generations
The 2024 model is no longer the current G14 generation. ASUS announced 2026 G14 configurations with RTX 50-series graphics and US listed MSRPs beginning at $3,599.99, with higher configurations reaching $4,799.99. Those prices make a discounted 2024 G14 attractive for value-focused buyers, while the newer generation is aimed at buyers who specifically need current-generation graphics and can justify the substantial premium. See ASUS’s 2026 announcement for the listed configurations.
Against the MacBook Pro 14
The MacBook Pro 14 is the better choice for buyers prioritizing macOS, battery life, and productivity. The G14 is the appropriate choice for Windows gaming, NVIDIA features such as DLSS and ray tracing, and broad PC game compatibility. They are alternatives for different priorities rather than direct substitutes.
Should you buy the 2024 G14 in 2026?
Use the actual sale price, not the original launch price, as the deciding factor. US launch/reference prices were approximately $1,599.99 for an RTX 4060/16GB model and $1,999.99 for an RTX 4070/32GB model; those figures are historical and are not verified 2026 street prices.
- Excellent buy: A heavily discounted RTX 4060 model, preferably with 32GB of RAM.
- Good buy: A fairly priced RTX 4060/32GB or RTX 4070/32GB configuration when portability and OLED quality are priorities.
- Poor buy: Any 2024 model priced close to a newer G14 or a higher-wattage competitor with substantially better gaming performance.
Final verdict
The 2024 ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 is not the fastest 14-inch gaming laptop, and its RTX 4070 should never be evaluated without its 90W power limit. It is still exceptional as a compact gaming-and-productivity machine: light enough to carry daily, refined enough for professional use, and equipped with one of the most enjoyable displays, speaker systems, and input experiences in its category.
Buy the RTX 4060 model for value, prioritize 32GB of memory for long-term ownership, and consider the RTX 4070 only when the price premium is small. If raw gaming performance, upgradeability, or all-day battery life matters more than portability and OLED quality, choose a different laptop.
