Best Gaming Laptops Reviewed by Notebookcheck: Ranked and Explained

Notebookcheck’s latest directly verifiable ranking puts the XMG Neo 16 E25 first, but the Zephyrus G16 and G14 are better fits for many buyers. Here is what each ranked laptop does best—and where it falls short.

Notebookcheck’s highest-rated gaming laptop in its latest directly verifiable flagship ranking is the Schenker XMG Neo 16 E25, with a 90% score. It is the right choice for maximum 16-inch performance, but not for most buyers. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 is a better all-rounder, the Zephyrus G14 is the most compelling portable option, and the Razer Blade 18 or Lenovo Legion 9 18 make more sense if you want a large screen.

Important date note: Notebookcheck updated the ranking on April 21, 2026, and labels its table “Best gaming notebooks to buy in May 2026.” Newer 2026 laptop reviews have since appeared, so this is Notebookcheck’s latest directly verifiable ranking page found here—not a definitive, fully refreshed August 2026 buying guide. How Notebookcheck’s ranking works

This is not a simple fastest-GPU chart. Notebookcheck combines its review ratings with recent testing, continued product relevance and availability, specifications, display characteristics, weight, thickness, and its wider benchmark database. When laptops share a rating, the newer review is placed higher. Prices are updated regularly and can change daily. Notebookcheck explains the ranking methodology here.

That distinction matters. A 90% laptop is not automatically the best purchase for every player. Notebookcheck’s score reflects the tested configuration and review methodology; it does not automatically account for a sale price, US warranty, a different panel or GPU power limit, your preferred games, or your tolerance for fan noise.

The 10 highest-ranked models

1. Schenker XMG Neo 16 E25 RTX 5090 — 90%

The XMG Neo 16 E25 is Notebookcheck’s top-ranked model and its fastest tested 16-inch gaming laptop. The reviewed configuration pairs a Core Ultra 9 275HX with an RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, 32 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD. Its 16-inch 2560×1600 matte mini-LED panel has a 300-Hz refresh rate and 189 pixels per inch. It weighs about 2.9 kg and is 27.9 mm thick. The ranking showed a price of €4,450.

Its strongest arguments are sustained performance, the high-refresh HDR-friendly display, PCIe 5.0 storage and optional external water cooling, which can improve CPU performance and acoustics. The costs are equally clear: this is a thick, heavy desktop replacement with a very high price. Water cooling also adds equipment and complexity, reducing some of the convenience normally associated with a laptop. Notebookcheck notes that an AMD configuration may have a CPU-performance advantage over the tested Intel version, so compare the exact SKU rather than buying on the model name alone.

Buy it if: you want the highest-rated 16-inch system and will run demanding games or creator workloads from a desk. Skip it if: you travel often, mainly play at 1080p, or want a quiet and inexpensive machine.

2. Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 (2025) RTX 5070 Ti — 89.9%

The G16 is the ranking’s best compromise between high-end gaming and everyday portability. Notebookcheck tested a Core Ultra 9 285H, RTX 5070 Ti, 32 GB of RAM and 1 TB SSD. Its 16-inch 2560×1600 display is housed in a chassis approximately 1.9 kg in weight and 17.4 mm thick. The table showed €3,399.

Compared with the Neo 16, it gives up graphics performance and thermal headroom, but it is dramatically easier to carry. The premium design, high-resolution display, Wi-Fi 7 and up-to-64-GB memory support make it suitable for gaming, school, work and creative applications. Exact GPU, memory and panel configurations vary by market, so verify the US SKU carefully.

Buy it if: one laptop must cover gaming and mobility. Skip it if: sustained maximum performance matters more than size and weight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Razer Blade 18 (2025) RTX 5090 — 89.5%

The Blade 18 combines an RTX 5090 with a Core Ultra 9 275HX, 64 GB of RAM and a 2 TB SSD. Its tested 18-inch 3840×2400 IPS display provides a very sharp 252 pixels per inch. The machine weighs about 3.2 kg and is 27.9 mm thick; Notebookcheck listed it at €5,299.

It is relatively thin for an 18-inch flagship and Notebookcheck highlights its strong cooling and comparatively favorable gaming acoustics. Its dual-mode display is a useful differentiator, letting buyers choose between a high-resolution mode and a faster gaming-oriented mode. However, IPS cannot match OLED or mini-LED for contrast and HDR impact, and driving a 4K-class resolution places a substantial workload on the GPU. The 2026 Blade 18 has also received later Notebookcheck coverage, so do not confuse its specifications with this 2025 ranking entry. Read Notebookcheck’s later Blade 18 coverage.

Buy it if: you want a premium large-screen laptop with relatively restrained acoustics for its class. Skip it if: price, easy upgrades or OLED/mini-LED HDR are priorities.

4. Lenovo Legion 9 18IAX10 RTX 5080 — 89.1%

The Legion 9 18 uses a Core Ultra 9 275HX, RTX 5080, 64 GB of RAM and a 2 TB SSD. Its 18-inch 3840×2400 IPS display is 252 PPI. At approximately 3.5 kg and 27.95 mm thick, it is the heaviest laptop in the top five. Notebookcheck’s table showed a price of about $3,800.

Rank #2
Lenovo Legion 5 15IRX10 15.1" WQXGA OLED, Gaming Laptop, Intel Core i9 14th Gen 14900HX 1.6GHz; NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 8GB GDDR7; 32GB DDR5 RAM; 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD; Gigabit LAN, 2x2 WiFi 7
  • Intel Core i9 14th Gen 14900HX 1.6GHz Processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 8GB GDDR7, 32GB DDR5-5600 RAM
  • 1TB PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe M.2 SSD
  • 15.1" WQXGA OLED Glossy Display
  • Gigabit LAN, 2x2 WiFi 7 (802.11be), Bluetooth 5.4
  • 4.19 lbs. (1.90 kg),Windows 11 Home

The Legion’s attractions are its huge high-resolution screen, powerful GPU and comparatively generous memory and storage expansion potential. Notebookcheck also reports better noise behavior than many competing 18-inch systems. It remains a transportable desktop rather than a commuting laptop, and US configuration, pricing and support should be checked independently.

Buy it if: you want a large screen and value expansion more than portability. Skip it if: you need to carry the laptop regularly or expect OLED-level contrast.

5. Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (2025) RTX 5080 — 88.9%

The G14 is the standout for performance per kilogram. The tested configuration includes a Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, RTX 5080, 64 GB of RAM and a 2 TB SSD. Its 14-inch 2880×1800 OLED panel has 243 PPI and a 120-Hz refresh rate. It weighs about 1.6 kg and is 18.3 mm thick; the listed RRP was €3,899.

Notebookcheck describes it as unrivaled in the 14-inch category among its tested configurations. The combination of a compact chassis, powerful graphics and OLED image quality is unusually capable. The trade-offs are a smaller gaming area, less thermal headroom and typically less upgradeability than larger laptops. OLED buyers should also examine brightness behavior, static-interface use and the manufacturer’s burn-in policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy it if: you travel, study or create content and still want serious AAA gaming performance. Skip it if: you want the quietest sustained performance or a large screen.

6. Medion Erazer Beast 16 X1 Ultimate — 88.5%

The Erazer Beast 16 X1 combines a Core Ultra 9 275HX and RTX 5090 with a 16-inch 2560×1600 300-Hz mini-LED display. It weighs approximately 2.8 kg, is 30 mm thick and was listed at about €4,300. Optional external liquid cooling and a broad port selection add to its appeal for demanding gaming and content creation.

Its major disadvantage is noise: Notebookcheck specifically flags high noise levels. Availability and service are also highly market-dependent, particularly for US buyers. It is an attractive European option when performance and display quality matter more than acoustics.

7. Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 (2025) RTX 5090 — 88.4%

The Strix Scar 16 is a conventional performance-focused gaming laptop with a Core Ultra 9 275HX, RTX 5090, 64 GB of RAM and a 2 TB SSD. Its 16-inch 2560×1600 mini-LED screen runs at 300 Hz. It is about 2.8 kg, 30.8 mm thick and was listed at €4,999.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It offers very high performance and a generous tested configuration, but its thickness, weight, price and likely high load noise make it less broadly appealing than the slimmer Zephyrus models. Its lower ranking than some other RTX 5090 laptops is a useful reminder that the GPU name does not determine the final score.

8. Schenker XMG Apex 16 Max RTX 5070 Ti — 87.8%

The XMG Apex 16 Max pairs a Ryzen 9 9955HX with an RTX 5070 Ti, 64 GB of RAM and a 2 TB SSD. It has a 16-inch 2560×1600 300-Hz mini-LED display, weighs about 2.7 kg and is 26 mm thick. Notebookcheck showed a starting price of €2,099 or more.

This is one of the more attainable high-end choices in the flagship chart, with a powerful AMD processor and an HDR-friendly panel. The word “starting” matters: expanding RAM, storage and other components can raise the final configurator price substantially. XMG’s direct-sales model may also be less convenient than buying from a major US retailer.

9. Schenker XMG Fusion 16 OLED RTX 5070 — 87.5%

The Fusion 16 OLED uses a Core Ultra 9 275HX, RTX 5070, 64 GB of RAM and a 2 TB SSD. Its 16-inch 2880×1800 OLED display has 212 PPI. At about 2.1 kg and 23 mm thick, it is considerably more portable than the RTX 5090 machines. Notebookcheck showed a starting price of €1,899 or more.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the display-first option: excellent contrast and image quality with enough GPU power for high-end gaming. The RTX 5070 is nevertheless below the 5080 and 5090 systems for demanding native-resolution gaming, and the reviewed specification costs more than the starting price suggests. OLED is not automatically best for competitive play; refresh rate, brightness consistency, latency and motion behavior still matter.

10. Schenker XMG Pro 16 E25 RTX 5070 Ti — 87.4%

The Pro 16 E25 has a Core Ultra 9 275HX, RTX 5070 Ti, 32 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD. Its tested display is a matte 16-inch 2560×1600 IPS panel rated at 500 nits and 300 Hz. It weighs about 2.5 kg, is 26.5 mm thick and starts at €1,999 or more.

It is a practical alternative to the more extreme Neo 16: strong performance, a high-refresh matte screen and a conventional chassis. IPS does not deliver the contrast of OLED or the HDR impact of mini-LED, and lower-spec retail configurations may differ from Notebookcheck’s test unit.

Best by use case

Best overall: XMG Neo 16 E25

That is the answer according to Notebookcheck’s ranking, based on its 90% score. It is not the universal best purchase: it is best for a buyer who values maximum tested 16-inch performance and accepts the cost, weight and complexity.

Best balanced laptop: ROG Zephyrus G16

The G16 is the strongest general recommendation for someone who wants a premium gaming laptop that can also travel. Its 1.9-kg chassis is much more manageable than the 2.7–2.9-kg performance machines, while the RTX 5070 Ti remains appropriate for high-resolution gaming with sensible settings and upscaling.

Best portable performance: ROG Zephyrus G14

At approximately 1.6 kg, the G14 is the clear travel pick. It sacrifices screen size and some thermal headroom, but its RTX 5080 and OLED display make it far more capable than typical ultraportable laptops.

Best large-screen choice

Choose the Razer Blade 18 for its premium chassis, cooling and comparatively favorable acoustics, or the Legion 9 18 for its expansion potential and reported noise advantage over many rivals. Neither should be described as genuinely portable: their 3.2–3.5-kg chassis are only practical to move occasionally.

Best HDR display

The XMG Neo 16, Medion Erazer Beast 16 and ROG Strix Scar 16 all combine 16-inch 1600p panels with mini-LED and 300-Hz refresh rates. Mini-LED offers high brightness and strong HDR, although local dimming can produce blooming around bright objects.

Best OLED

The G14 offers the best portable OLED option, while the XMG Fusion 16 OLED gives you a larger 16-inch canvas. OLED provides superb contrast and fast response, but assess static desktop use, brightness behavior and burn-in coverage before buying.

Best upgradeability

The Legion 9 18 is the notable choice in this list because Notebookcheck reports more RAM and SSD expansion potential than several competing 18-inch models. Confirm the exact configuration before purchase: “upgradeable” does not mean every component is replaceable.

Best value

Within this flagship list, the XMG Apex 16 Max and Fusion 16 OLED are the most attainable starting points. They are not budget laptops. For a genuine sub-$1,500 or sub-€1,500 recommendation, use Notebookcheck’s separate affordable ranking, which applies that price ceiling and targets modern 1080p gaming. What matters more than the GPU name

Laptop GPU names are not complete performance specifications. Results depend on the GPU’s power limit, cooling system, CPU, memory configuration, MUX or Advanced Optimus implementation, drivers, firmware, game engine and ray-tracing workload. Testing mode also matters: maximum performance normally requires wall power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The ranking demonstrates the point. RTX 5090 laptops appear first, third, sixth and seventh—not in a strict four-place block. A well-cooled RTX 5080 or RTX 5070 Ti can be a better overall laptop because of its chassis, display, noise, portability or price.

Notebookcheck’s listed 3DMark Fire Strike scores also illustrate performance differences without being universal gaming frame rates:

Model Fire Strike 1920×1080
Legion 9 18 42,855
XMG Neo 16 E25 42,543
Medion Erazer Beast 16 X1 42,189
Razer Blade 18 40,595
ROG Strix Scar 16 38,818
XMG Apex 16 Max 39,568
XMG Pro 16 E25 35,805
ROG Zephyrus G14 32,734
ROG Zephyrus G16 32,615
XMG Fusion 16 28,680

These are results from specific review units and can change with power limits, drivers, firmware and cooling modes. They should not be converted into promised frame rates for every game.

OLED, mini-LED or IPS?

  • OLED: Best contrast, vivid image quality and fast response. Consider burn-in management, brightness behavior and policies covering panel wear.
  • Mini-LED: High brightness and strong HDR, making it attractive in bright rooms and HDR games. Local dimming may cause blooming.
  • IPS: Often practical for matte viewing and long desktop sessions, with predictable brightness. Contrast and HDR are generally weaker.

Resolution must be matched to the GPU. A 3840×2400 panel is sharp, but native high-resolution gaming is more demanding than 2560×1600. Many buyers will prefer a lower-resolution mode with upscaling and a higher refresh rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Portability, noise and sustained performance

Weight and thickness create a real dividing line. The G14 is about 1.6 kg and 18.3 mm thick; the G16 is 1.9 kg and 17.4 mm. The XMG Neo is about 2.9 kg and 27.9 mm, while the Legion 9 18 reaches roughly 3.5 kg and 27.95 mm.

Thicker laptops generally have more thermal headroom, larger cooling systems and more room for upgradeable components. Thin designs are easier to carry but may constrain sustained performance or produce more noticeable fan noise when pushed hard. Include the power adapter in your travel calculation: the laptop’s listed weight does not include its charger, and gaming performance usually falls substantially on battery.

Noise should be judged in the mode you will actually use. The Blade 18 is noted for comparatively favorable gaming acoustics for its category; the Erazer Beast 16 is specifically flagged as loud. Do not call any laptop “quiet” without identifying the test mode and comparison group.

Do you need an RTX 5090?

No—most buyers do not. An RTX 5070 or 5070 Ti is often the more rational choice for 1080p or 1440p gaming, portable systems, quieter designs or a fixed budget. DLSS and other upscaling technologies can also reduce the need to render every frame at native resolution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An RTX 5090 is easier to justify for high-refresh 1600p gaming, demanding ray tracing, large high-resolution screens, long-term performance headroom or GPU-accelerated creator workloads. The benefit depends on the game, settings, power limit, drivers and display; there is no universal frame-rate advantage that applies equally to every laptop.

Buying checklist

  1. Identify the exact SKU. Check GPU, GPU power limit, CPU, panel, RAM and SSD rather than relying on the family name.
  2. Match the screen to your games. Choose OLED for contrast, mini-LED for bright-room HDR, or IPS for a practical matte display.
  3. Check sustained performance and noise. A short benchmark burst is less important than behavior after extended gaming.
  4. Calculate the travel burden. Add charger weight and size to the laptop, and remember that battery operation is not equivalent to plugged-in performance.
  5. Inspect upgrade options. Confirm whether RAM is soldered, how many M.2 slots exist, and how easy the chassis is to open.
  6. Verify regional support. US buyers should check keyboard layout, warranty, repair coverage, return policy, charger compatibility and retailer configuration.
  7. Check the price at checkout. Notebookcheck’s displayed prices may change daily; XMG “from” prices can be substantially below the reviewed configuration.

Availability and newer 2026 reviews

Schenker/XMG and Medion are especially market-dependent. They may be excellent choices in Europe while being difficult for US buyers to source or service. Asus, Lenovo and Razer generally have broader retail visibility, but even those brands sell materially different regional configurations.

Notebookcheck’s homepage has also shown newer 2026 coverage, including the Razer Blade 18 2026, Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 2026, Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 2026, Lenovo Legion 5 15AGP11 and Asus TUF Gaming A18 2026. Because the flagship chart identified here was updated April 21, 2026, verify whether Notebookcheck has refreshed it before treating this order as current for a later purchase date.
