Its lightweight aluminum chassis, excellent OLED display, strong speakers, long battery life, and capable Ryzen AI 9 processor make it more versatile than most gaming machines. The catch is the RTX 4070: at the reviewed price of $2,299, it was too expensive for its gaming performance. Below the review’s $2,000 value threshold, the 32GB configuration becomes much easier to recommend.
This review covers the 2024 ROG Zephyrus G16 GA605 with a Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, GeForce RTX 4070, 32GB of onboard memory, a 1TB SSD, and a 16-inch 2560×1600 240Hz OLED display. Other G16 configurations should not be assumed to perform identically.

The short version
The Ryzen AI 9 Zephyrus G16 is best understood as a portable performance laptop with gaming graphics, not a desktop replacement. At 4.08 pounds, it is dramatically easier to carry than many 16-inch gaming laptops. It also works well as a productivity or creator machine thanks to its 16:10 OLED panel, SD card reader, capable CPU, good speakers, and unusually strong battery life for the category.
Its main compromise is sustained gaming performance. The thin chassis gets hot, the keyboard is cramped, the webcam is mediocre, and the RTX 4070 cannot consistently drive demanding games at native 2560×1600 resolution and Ultra settings. The 240Hz panel is most useful for esports and lighter games; it is not a promise of 240 frames per second in modern AAA titles.

Buy it when: portability, display quality, battery life, and CPU performance matter almost as much as gaming speed, and the RTX 4070/32GB model is substantially discounted.
Skip it when: you want maximum frames per dollar, cool lap gaming, upgradeable RAM, or flagship-level AAA performance.
Laptop Mag’s review reported a $2,299 price for the tested model and considered it much more compelling below $2,000. That is historical review pricing, not a current September 2026 price. Live pricing and availability should be checked separately.
Which Zephyrus G16 is this?
The product name is easy to blur across generations and configurations. This article concerns the 2024 GA605 AMD model, specifically the reviewed RTX 4070 version:
| Component | Reviewed specification |
|---|---|
| Processor | AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, 12 cores/24 threads, up to 5.1GHz |
| Graphics | Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU, 8GB GDDR6 |
| GPU power | ASUS-listed 105W ROG Boost configuration |
| Memory | 32GB LPDDR5X onboard |
| Storage | 1TB SSD in the review sample |
| Display | 16-inch 16:10 OLED, 2560×1600, 240Hz class |
| Battery | 90Wh |
| Weight | 4.08 pounds/1.85kg |
ASUS’s specification page also lists an RTX 4060 version with 16GB of onboard memory and different storage configurations. Do not transfer the RTX 4070 review results to that cheaper model. The 2025 GA605 is a separate model-year specification set as well.
Design: remarkably portable, with predictable compromises
The G16’s aluminum chassis measures approximately 13.94×9.69×0.59–0.65 inches and weighs just over four pounds. That is the laptop’s defining advantage. It fits the role of a travel-friendly gaming machine far better than heavier performance laptops, while still offering a 16-inch screen and a discrete GPU.
The thin design also explains several weaknesses. Sustained gaming produces high external temperatures, and the keyboard sacrifices some space for the compact chassis. This is a laptop to use on a desk, stand, or other hard surface—not a machine to balance comfortably on your lap during a long gaming session.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Gaming performance: good at the right settings, not a 1600p/240Hz powerhouse
The RTX 4070 is capable, but it is not powerful enough to make every demanding game look and run ideally at the panel’s native resolution. Laptop Mag’s results show why:
| Game | Settings | 1080p | 1600p |
|---|---|---|---|
| Far Cry 6 | Ultra | — | 65 fps |
| Assassin’s Creed Mirage | Ultra | 94 fps | 67 fps |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | Ultra | 35 fps | 19 fps |
| Shadow of the Tomb Raider | Highest | 104 fps | 61 fps |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | Medium | 68 fps | 40 fps |
These figures are useful because they separate the display’s capability from the GPU’s practical output. Competitive games and less demanding titles can make good use of 240Hz. Newer cinematic games often need a lower render resolution, reduced settings, DLSS or another upscaling mode, and sometimes frame generation to approach high refresh rates.
That is a sensible way to use this laptop, but it is not the same as native 2560×1600 Ultra gaming at 240fps. Buyers focused on maximum AAA performance should look at heavier laptops with faster graphics, especially if the Zephyrus price approaches RTX 4080-class territory.
The OLED display is a major reason to buy it
The 16-inch 16:10 OLED panel is excellent for games, films, photo work, and everyday productivity. Its 2560×1600 resolution provides a useful vertical workspace, while OLED contrast gives dark scenes much more depth than a typical LCD. ASUS specifies 100% DCI-P3 coverage and Pantone validation, along with a 240Hz refresh rate.

- High-Performance Processing: Powered by an Intel 16-core Ultra 9 285H processor (2.9GHz base, up to 5.4GHz boost, 24MB Smart Cache, 16 Threads) paired with a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 8GB GDDR7 graphics card.
- Immersive Display: Features a 16-inch 2.5K (2560x1600) OLED display with a 240Hz refresh rate, 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, 500 nits brightness, and NVIDIA G-SYNC support.
- Extensive Connectivity: Offers versatile ports including Thunderbolt 4, USB-C 3.2 (with DisplayPort, Power Delivery, and G-SYNC), two USB-A 3.2, HDMI 2.1 FRL, and an SD card reader for maximum flexibility.
- Complete Software & Feature Suite: Comes with Windows 11 Professional and is equipped with a 1-zone RGB backlit keyboard, Wi-Fi 7, Dolby Atmos audio, AI noise-canceling technology, and a premium 4-speaker system with dual-force woofers, smart amplifiers, and tweeters.
- Enhanced Communication: Includes an FHD IR camera for clear video calls and secure facial recognition login.
There is one important measurement qualification. Laptop Mag’s colorimeter measured 82.1% of DCI-P3, below its cited premium gaming-laptop average of 90.9%, although the result compared favorably with several named competitors. ASUS’s 100% DCI-P3 figure is an official specification; Laptop Mag’s 82.1% figure is an independent measurement under its test conditions. They should not be treated as interchangeable claims.
OLED also means a glossy surface and the usual need to think about long periods of static content. Buyers who leave desktop interfaces, timelines, or other fixed elements visible for many hours should review ASUS’s display-care features and regional warranty terms. The available testing does not establish a long-term burn-in result for this review sample.
Ryzen AI 9 HX 370: excellent efficiency, not a reason to expect more gaming frames
The Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 is one of the laptop’s strongest components for non-gaming work. Laptop Mag recorded a Geekbench 6.3 score of 15,408 and completed its 4K-to-1080p HandBrake transcode in 3 minutes 12 seconds. It outperformed the lower-power Intel systems in that comparison, although the higher-wattage Core i9-14900HX in Lenovo’s Legion 7i was faster.
That makes the G16 a strong choice for multitasking, compiling, encoding, office work, and mobile creative workloads. The processor also contributes to the laptop’s good battery result. However, the RTX 4070 remains the dominant component for game rendering. The Ryzen AI branding and its XDNA NPU—rated by ASUS at up to 50 TOPS—do not turn the RTX 4070 into a faster GPU.

Windows AI features, Copilot-related functions, and camera effects may benefit from local acceleration where supported, but they are not the main buying reason for a gaming laptop. Choose this processor for its CPU performance and efficiency, not because “AI PC” implies higher game performance.
Battery life is unusually good for a gaming laptop
Laptop Mag measured 9 hours 14 minutes on its battery test. That was substantially longer than the comparison Legion 7i, Alienware m16 R2, Intel Zephyrus G16, and the cited premium gaming-laptop average.
This is a controlled laboratory result, not nine hours of gaming. Demanding games normally use the discrete GPU, drain the battery much faster, and may run at reduced performance away from wall power. Still, the combination of a 90Wh battery and efficient AMD platform makes the Zephyrus unusually practical for travel, study, and work between charges.
Heat: the price of putting this performance in a thin chassis
After 15 minutes of gaming, Laptop Mag measured up to 131°F on the hottest area of the underside. The underside average was reported at 117°F, while the keyboard center reached 98°F and the touchpad measured 78°F.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThese are external surface temperatures, not internal CPU or GPU temperatures. They nevertheless have clear practical consequences: use the laptop on a hard, unobstructed surface, keep ventilation areas clear, and expect fans and chassis heat during sustained gaming. A heavier gaming laptop may deliver stronger sustained performance and more comfortable surfaces because it has more room for cooling.
Keyboard, webcam, speakers, and everyday use
Keyboard
The keyboard is one of the more meaningful compromises. Laptop Mag criticized it as cramped, and keyboard comfort also appears as a recurring weakness in Notebookcheck’s review collection. It is usable, but people who write or code for hours should try the layout first or plan to use an external keyboard.
Speakers
The speakers are a highlight. ASUS lists four speakers, dual force woofers, tweeters, Dolby Atmos, Smart Amplifier technology, and AI noise cancellation. Laptop Mag also praised the audio. That makes the G16 more pleasant as a general-purpose media and work machine than many gaming laptops.

Webcam
The 1080p IR webcam supports Windows Hello, but Laptop Mag found poor contrast, washed-out areas, and inaccurate color. It is adequate for ordinary calls, not a strong built-in camera for streaming or serious video production. Frequent streamers and video-call users should budget for an external webcam.

The port selection is well suited to a thin creator-friendly laptop: two USB-A ports, USB-C connectivity including USB4, DisplayPort and power delivery support, HDMI 2.1, an SD Express card reader, 3.5mm audio, and ASUS’s proprietary power connector. ASUS lists two M.2 PCIe storage slots, so adding storage is more realistic than treating a high-capacity factory SSD as the only option.
Memory is different. The LPDDR5X RAM is onboard rather than conventional removable SO-DIMM memory. The RTX 4070 configuration is listed with 32GB, while the RTX 4060 version is listed with 16GB. Choose capacity carefully at purchase, particularly if you edit video, run virtual machines, use large creative applications, or want to keep the laptop for several years.

The reviewed RTX 4070/32GB configuration cost $2,299 at the time of Laptop Mag’s review. The publication’s central criticism was not that the laptop was poor, but that the price placed an RTX 4070 thin laptop against heavier systems with substantially faster RTX 4080 or RTX 4090 graphics.
The useful buying rule is therefore conditional:
- Below the review’s $2,000 threshold: a strong value if you specifically want portability, OLED quality, battery life, and 32GB of memory.
- Near $2,299: difficult to justify unless the thin design and display are more important to you than maximum gaming performance.
- At flagship-level pricing: look carefully at heavier RTX 4080-class alternatives before buying.

Alternatives
Intel Zephyrus G16
The Intel model is the closest design alternative. Laptop Mag found the Ryzen version faster than the tested Intel G16 in several CPU and gaming comparisons, but a large discount can change the decision. Compare the exact GPU, RAM, SSD, and display rather than assuming the processor name alone determines the better purchase.
Lenovo Legion 7i Gen 9
The Legion 7i is the stronger performance-oriented option in the cited comparison. Its high-wattage Core i9-14900HX scored higher in Geekbench, and Laptop Mag recommended it as a better immediate buy at the prices available during that review. Its heavier chassis is less travel-friendly but may offer a more comfortable keyboard and better sustained performance.
Alienware m16 R2
The Alienware provides a more conventional gaming-laptop alternative: heavier, less portable, and better in some individual gaming tests, but with shorter battery life in Laptop Mag’s comparison.
Heavier RTX 4080 or RTX 4090 laptops
These are the better direction for buyers who want native high-resolution AAA gaming and maximum frames per dollar. The trade-offs are weight, portability, battery life, and often a less refined mobile-work experience.

Final verdict
The 2024 AMD ROG Zephyrus G16 is a remarkably balanced machine. It gives you a premium 16-inch OLED screen, excellent speakers, a strong and efficient CPU, useful ports, good battery life, and a genuinely portable chassis. Few gaming laptops combine those qualities so effectively.
But its RTX 4070 is the limiting factor, and the thin design brings heat and keyboard compromises. At $2,299, the laptop was overpriced for its gaming performance. At a meaningful discount—especially below the review’s $2,000 threshold—the 32GB model becomes a compelling choice for buyers who want one laptop for gaming, work, travel, and creative use. It is a portable performance laptop first and a maximum-performance gaming laptop second.
