“The program can’t start because physx3cooking_x86.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”

“This application failed to start because physx3cooking_x86.dll was not found.”

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

These errors mean that a game or application cannot load one of its PhysX runtime libraries. The safest first fix is to repair or verify the affected game, because physx3cooking_x86.dll normally belongs beside that game’s executable rather than in a Windows system folder.

The 60-second answer

physx3cooking_x86.dll is a 32-bit NVIDIA PhysX 3 library used by games for collision and physics processing. It is not a Microsoft Windows system file, and it should not normally be copied into System32 or SysWOW64.

  • Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
  • Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
  • Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
  • Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)

Try these steps in order:

  1. Restart Windows and the game launcher.
  2. Verify or repair the affected game’s files.
  3. Reinstall the game’s bundled prerequisites if it has a _CommonRedist or Redist folder.
  4. Install NVIDIA PhysX System Software 9.23.1019 from NVIDIA’s official website.
  5. Check whether the error actually names a missing Visual C++ or legacy DirectX dependency.
  6. Use DISM and SFC only if there are signs of broader Windows component corruption.

Do not download the DLL from a random DLL website. An unknown copy may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different PhysX build, or leave the real problem unresolved.

What is physx3cooking_x86.dll?

physx3cooking_x86.dll is part of NVIDIA PhysX 3, a physics middleware system used by games and other interactive applications.

The word “cooking” refers to a PhysX process that converts mesh or geometry data into a form optimized for collision detection and simulation. The file is a runtime component, not a document, driver control panel, or Windows service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The x86 suffix means the DLL is 32-bit. A 32-bit game can use this file on either 32-bit Windows or 64-bit Windows through Windows’ 32-bit compatibility layer. A 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL as its equivalent library.

NVIDIA’s PhysX redistribution terms identify PhysX3Cooking_x86.dll as a redistributable PhysX component and direct game developers to place PhysX binaries locally with the application executable. That is why the correct copy is often found in a game folder.

Is it made by Microsoft or NVIDIA?

It is not an inbox Microsoft Windows component. It belongs to the PhysX technology supplied by NVIDIA, although the particular copy on your computer was usually installed by a game developer’s installer, launcher, or bundled redistributable.

The game developer may package a specific PhysX build with the game. That private copy can be different from the version installed globally by NVIDIA PhysX System Software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where should it be located?

Normally, look for it in the folder containing the affected game’s executable, or in a nearby game-specific bin, Binaries, or runtime folder.

The exact location depends on the application’s design. The important rule is that it should be in the application’s own installation area, not copied into:

  • C:\Windows\System32
  • C:\Windows\SysWOW64
  • The Windows directory
  • An unrelated game’s folder

On 64-bit Windows, System32 is primarily associated with 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit Windows components. Neither directory is the normal home for this application-local PhysX DLL.

Which game installed it?

There is no universal game associated with the filename. The application that needs it is normally the one whose folder contains the other PhysX files and whose executable produces the error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Commonly affected software is older or legacy PC game software that uses PhysX 3 and ships its own runtime files. Public file inventories have shown several PhysX 3 builds, including 3.2.4.1, 3.2.3.1, 3.2.1.1, and 3.1.1.1. These observations do not establish a universal version for every installation.

To identify the owning program:

  1. Read the full path shown by the launcher, shortcut, or error context.
  2. Right-click the game’s shortcut and choose Properties.
  3. Check the Target field.
  4. Open that folder and look for the game’s executable and related PhysX DLLs.
  5. If several games are installed, search each game folder rather than searching the entire Windows directory first.

Why the error appears

The cause is usually local to one game or application, not Windows itself. The main possibilities are:

Likely cause What usually fixes it
The game DLL was deleted or corrupted Verify, repair, or reinstall the game
A game update or failed reinstall removed it Run the launcher repair process
A mod or cleanup utility removed it Disable mods and restore a clean installation
Antivirus quarantined it Review Protection History and reinstall if necessary
The PhysX runtime is damaged or absent Install NVIDIA PhysX System Software
The wrong x86 or x64 files were used Restore the complete matching DLL set
Another dependency is missing Install the required Visual C++ or DirectX runtime
Windows components are corrupted Run DISM, then SFC
A driver installation is damaged Repair or reinstall the relevant driver

The correct fix depends on which branch matches the evidence. Installing every runtime and driver available is less reliable than identifying which component is actually missing.

Fix 1: Verify or repair the game files

This is the best first fix when only one game reports the error. A game-local PhysX DLL is usually restored by the launcher that installed the game.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam

  1. Restart Steam.
  2. Open Library.
  3. Right-click the affected game.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Choose Installed Files.
  6. Click Verify integrity of game files.
  7. Wait for the process to finish.
  8. Start the game again without launching mods or overlays first.

A successful verification may report that files were reacquired or replaced. Start the game after the process completes, even if Steam reports that no problems were found.

If the error remains:

  1. Open the game’s installation folder from Steam’s Installed Files page.
  2. Confirm whether physx3cooking_x86.dll is present beside the relevant executable.
  3. Check whether the other PhysX 3 files are also present.
  4. Temporarily disable third-party mods.
  5. Verify the files again.
  6. If verification does not restore the file, uninstall and reinstall the game through Steam.

Do not manually replace only physx3cooking_x86.dll if the folder also contains files such as PhysX3_x86.dll or PhysX3Common_x86.dll. These files are normally supplied as a compatible group.

Other launchers

Most launchers provide a similar command:

  1. Open the launcher.
  2. Open your game library.
  3. Select the affected game.
  4. Open its settings menu.
  5. Choose Verify, Repair, Scan and repair, or a similarly named option.
  6. Allow the launcher to download replacement files.
  7. Start the game before reinstalling mods.

If the launcher has no repair option, reinstall the game from its official launcher or installation media. Back up save files and configuration files first if the game stores them in a custom location.

What success looks like

The fix worked when:

  • The game reaches its menu or main window.
  • The original physx3cooking_x86.dll error does not return.
  • The launcher no longer reports damaged files.
  • The game folder contains the restored DLL beside the appropriate executable.

If a different DLL error appears afterward, do not assume the first repair failed. The loader may simply have reached the next missing dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Install NVIDIA PhysX System Software

If the game includes an installer for PhysX, or if several PhysX-based games fail, install NVIDIA’s official PhysX System Software 9.23.1019 package.

Use NVIDIA’s official PhysX download page or the installer distributed with the affected game. Avoid third-party mirrors and DLL libraries.

Installation steps

  1. Close the game and its launcher.
  2. Download the PhysX System Software package from NVIDIA’s official website.
  3. Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
  4. Accept the license terms.
  5. Choose the default installation option unless the installer gives a specific repair option.
  6. Let the installation complete.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Start the affected game.

If PhysX is already installed:

  1. Press Win+I.
  2. Choose Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Search for NVIDIA PhysX System Software.
  5. Open its menu and choose Uninstall, if available.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Install the official NVIDIA package again.
  8. Restart once more and test the game.

You can also open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features, select NVIDIA PhysX System Software, and choose Uninstall.

Installing the global PhysX package may not recreate a game-specific copy inside the game’s folder. If the application expects a private version, verify or reinstall the application as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Very old games

NVIDIA also distributes a separate PhysX Legacy System Software 9.13.0604 package for very old PhysX SDK 2.7-era games. It is not a general replacement for a missing PhysX 3 library.

Use the legacy package only when the game’s documentation or bundled installer specifically requires it. For an error naming PhysX3Cooking_x86.dll, repair the game’s PhysX 3 files first.

Fix 3: Check the architecture and matching file set

The x86 part of the filename matters. It identifies a 32-bit library.

A 64-bit version of another PhysX DLL is not a valid replacement. Copying an x64 file over an x86 file can produce a “bad image,” “not designed to run on Windows,” or similar loader error.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Determine whether the game is 32-bit

There is no single universal label in every launcher, but these checks help:

  1. Open the game’s installation folder.
  2. Right-click the main executable.
  3. Choose Properties.
  4. Open the Details tab and review the product information.
  5. Check the game’s documentation or publisher support page.
  6. If the game is an older title, assume it may be 32-bit unless its documentation says otherwise.

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application normally runs without special configuration. The issue is not that x86 is “wrong” for a 64-bit version of Windows. The issue is whether the executable and all of its runtime DLLs match.

Restore the complete PhysX group

If the file exists but the program still fails, check the application directory for related files. A PhysX 3 game may require several compatible libraries, including:

  • PhysX3_x86.dll
  • PhysX3Common_x86.dll
  • PhysX3Cooking_x86.dll

Do not choose the newest-looking file from another game. Even when two files have the same name, they may belong to different application builds.

Rank #2
Microsoft Windows 11 PRO (Ingles) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB Flash Drive
  • MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE

The known file observations associated with this filename include these 32-bit versions:

Version Reported size
3.2.4.1 0.33 MB
3.2.3.1 0.29 MB
3.2.1.1 0.5 MB
3.1.1.1 0.63 MB

These are not a complete NVIDIA version catalogue. They should not be used to select a replacement manually. The correct version is the one supplied for the affected application’s build.

Fix 4: Find a missing dependency

The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that physx3cooking_x86.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL and then failed to load one of its dependencies.

Windows searches for ordinary application DLLs using a defined search order that includes the application directory. A dependency missing from that chain can make the named PhysX file appear to be missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look at the next error

After verifying the game, read the exact new message. Install another runtime only when the error identifies it.

If the message names one of these families, the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime may be required:

  • MSVCR
  • MSVCP
  • VCRUNTIME
  • api-ms-win-crt

Use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads and install the architecture required by the application. A 32-bit game commonly requires the x86 redistributable even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

Do not remove older Visual C++ versions merely because a newer one is installed. Multiple redistributable generations can legitimately coexist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the message names a legacy DirectX file such as:

  • D3DX
  • XINPUT1_3
  • XAudio2_7

install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime. That package supplies older DirectX SDK components. It does not install physx3cooking_x86.dll and is not a replacement for PhysX.

How to tell whether the dependency repair worked

The repair worked when:

  • The error changes from a Microsoft runtime name to a different missing component, or
  • The game starts normally, or
  • The application no longer reports a loader error.

If a new DLL name appears, identify that file before installing anything else. A chain of different missing DLL messages usually indicates an incomplete game installation or a missing bundled prerequisite.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can remove or quarantine a game DLL after an update, mod installation, or scan. That is a possible cause, but do not automatically restore every quarantined file.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Windows Security

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Expand any detection associated with the affected game folder.
  6. Check the original path and detection details.
  7. Restore the file only when it clearly came from the original game installation or an official NVIDIA installer and its security status is understood.

If you are uncertain:

  1. Leave the file quarantined.
  2. Run a full security scan.
  3. Verify or reinstall the game from its official launcher.
  4. Update the security definitions.
  5. Start the clean installation again.

Do not create a broad antivirus exclusion for the entire Windows directory. If the publisher confirms the game is safe and the same file is repeatedly removed, use a narrowly scoped exclusion for the game’s installation folder and continue monitoring it.

Signs antivirus caused the problem

The antivirus explanation is more likely when:

  • The file disappeared after a security scan.
  • Protection History names the exact game path.
  • The game worked before the detection.
  • Verifying the game restores the file but antivirus removes it again.

If the file is restored and immediately quarantined again, resolve the detection with the antivirus vendor or game publisher rather than downloading another copy.

Fix 6: Reinstall the game’s bundled prerequisites

Many games include prerequisite installers inside folders named:

  • _CommonRedist
  • Redist
  • Redistributables
  • Support
  • Prerequisites

To use them:

  1. Open the game’s installation folder.
  2. Look for one of the folders above.
  3. Open subfolders for PhysX, Visual C++, DirectX, or similar packages.
  4. Run the installer that matches the affected game.
  5. Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Verify the game files again.
  8. Start the game without mods.

This is especially useful after moving a game between computers or restoring it from a backup. The game may be present while its prerequisite installers were never run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Check permissions, blocking, and the actual executable path

A file can exist but remain unusable if it is blocked, inaccessible, or located beside a different executable than the one being launched.

Confirm the path

  1. Right-click the shortcut used to start the game.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Review the Target field.
  4. Open the folder containing that executable.
  5. Confirm that the PhysX DLL is in the expected application directory.

If the launcher starts a separate executable, the shortcut may not point to the file that produced the error.

Check file properties

  1. Right-click physx3cooking_x86.dll.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Look for an Unblock checkbox or button on the General tab.
  4. If present and the file came from a trusted official installer, select Unblock.
  5. Choose Apply, then OK.
  6. Test the game again.

Do not unblock a file simply because it is required. Confirm its source first.

Check folder access

  1. Right-click the game’s installation folder.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Security tab.
  4. Confirm that your Windows account has read and execute access.
  5. If the game was installed under a restricted location, test the launcher with Run as administrator.

Running as administrator can diagnose an access problem, but it is not a substitute for repairing a missing or mismatched DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 8: Use Windows Features only for a confirmed legacy requirement

Windows Features does not install PhysX. It can help only when an older game separately requires a Windows legacy component such as DirectPlay.

To enable DirectPlay:

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Type optionalfeatures.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Expand Legacy Components.
  5. Select DirectPlay.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Restart Windows if prompted.
  8. Test the game again.

Do not enable random Windows components as a response to a PhysX error. If the game does not mention DirectPlay or another optional Windows feature, this step is unlikely to affect physx3cooking_x86.dll.

Fix 9: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

DISM and SFC repair Windows components. They normally do not restore a third-party game DLL, so use them when other Windows problems are present or when several unrelated applications are failing.

Run DISM first

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Choose Run as administrator.
  5. Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish.
  2. Restart Windows.

The command may take time and can appear to pause. Wait for a completion message rather than closing the window early.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run SFC second

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:

sfc /scannow

Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the application.

Possible results include:

  • No integrity violations were found.
  • Corrupted files were found and repaired.
  • Corrupted files were found but some could not be repaired.

If SFC reports that it could not repair everything, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If the problem remains limited to one game, return to game verification or reinstall the game instead of repeatedly running SFC.

When you are manually repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows problems and show what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive fix for a private game DLL.

Fix 10: Update or reinstall drivers only when the evidence points there

A graphics driver is not the default home of physx3cooking_x86.dll. Reinstalling an NVIDIA graphics driver is therefore a secondary step, not the first response to a missing application-local PhysX file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider a driver repair when:

  • Several games fail with graphics or PhysX-related errors.
  • The NVIDIA installation is visibly damaged.
  • Device Manager reports a display adapter problem.
  • The problem began immediately after a failed driver update.
  • The official PhysX installer itself fails because of a broader NVIDIA installation problem.

Check Device Manager

  1. Press Win+X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Double-click the NVIDIA adapter.
  5. Open the General tab.
  6. Check Device status.
  7. Open the Driver tab and review the driver details.

If Device Manager shows an error code, record it before changing anything.

Update the driver

  1. Right-click the NVIDIA adapter.
  2. Select Update driver.
  3. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  4. Install any offered update.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Test the game.

For a clean reinstall, download the current driver from NVIDIA’s official driver page, run the installer, choose the custom installation option if available, and select the clean-install option when presented.

If the driver installer fails, remove only the relevant NVIDIA display software through Installed apps, restart Windows, and install the official driver again. Do not remove unrelated Windows drivers.

When checking Device Manager across many hardware categories is taking longer than the actual game repair, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; the full version performs the driver installation, while the game developer’s installer remains the authoritative source for this particular DLL.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration function such as DllRegisterServer. It is intended for registerable components, commonly COM or ActiveX components.

  • GENUINE WINDOWS SOFTWARE IS BRANDED BY MIRCOSOFT ONLY.

physx3cooking_x86.dll is a normal PhysX runtime dependency. There is no NVIDIA instruction to register it with regsvr32.

Running a command such as this is not an appropriate repair:

regsvr32 physx3cooking_x86.dll

It will commonly produce an error saying that the module could not be loaded or that the entry point was not found. That does not mean the DLL should be registered. It means the command does not apply to the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use application repair, PhysX installation, or dependency repair instead.

Is manual copying safe?

Manual copying is safe only in a narrow situation:

  • The source came from the same application build or official installation media.
  • The target is the affected application’s own directory.
  • The source and target architecture match.
  • The file has been checked for authenticity.
  • The rest of the PhysX DLL set matches the same build.

For example, copying a verified file from an identical installation backup into the affected game’s folder may recover a damaged installation. Copying a file from another game, a random archive, or an unknown DLL website is not a reliable repair.

Never copy it into System32 or SysWOW64. That can create version conflicts and does not correct the application’s expected local runtime.

What “not designed to run on Windows” means

An error such as:

physx3cooking_x86.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

usually indicates one of these problems:

  • The file is corrupted.
  • The architecture does not match the process.
  • The file belongs to a different PhysX build.
  • A dependency is damaged.
  • Security software modified the file.
  • The file was replaced by an incomplete or untrusted copy.

Use this sequence:

  1. Close the game.
  2. Do not download another DLL from a random source.
  3. Check the antivirus quarantine history.
  4. Remove the suspect application copy only if you can restore it through the launcher.
  5. Verify or reinstall the game.
  6. Install the official PhysX System Software if the game requires it.
  7. Test the clean installation before adding mods.

Do not replace an x86 PhysX library with an x64 file merely because Windows is 64-bit.

What if the file exists but Windows still says it cannot be found?

Check these items:

  1. Confirm that the file is beside the executable that is actually being launched.
  2. Confirm that the application is 32-bit if it expects the x86 library.
  3. Check for the other PhysX 3 DLLs.
  4. Review Protection History for quarantine or modification.
  5. Check the file’s Properties for blocking.
  6. Read the exact error for a missing dependency name.
  7. Verify the application files.
  8. Reinstall the application’s bundled prerequisites.

If the message says “The specified module could not be found,” the missing item may be a dependency rather than the named file. Installing a random copy of the named DLL usually does not solve that condition.

What if the error changes to another DLL?

A changed error is useful evidence. It often means the first missing file was restored and Windows has reached the next missing dependency.

Use the new filename to choose the next step:

  • MSVCR, MSVCP, VCRUNTIME, or api-ms-win-crt: check the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
  • D3DX, XINPUT, or legacy XAudio: check Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime.
  • Another PhysX3 DLL: verify or reinstall the game’s complete PhysX file set.
  • A Windows system DLL: check Windows updates, DISM, and SFC.
  • A file removed repeatedly by security software: review Protection History and scan the installation.

Do not install several unrelated packages at once. Make one change, restart if required, and test again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

System Restore for a recent failure

System Restore can help when the error began after a driver, software, or Windows change and a suitable restore point exists. It is not a replacement for reinstalling a game.

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Choose a different restore point if available.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the failure.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs.
  5. Review the applications and drivers that may be changed.
  6. Confirm the restore point.
  7. Restart Windows when prompted.
  8. Test the game.

A restore operation may remove a recently installed application or driver while leaving personal files intact. Review the affected-program list before confirming.

Malware, disk, and profile checks

These are less specific to PhysX, but investigate them when files repeatedly disappear or several programs develop unexplained loader failures.

Run a security scan

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Choose Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Scan options.
  4. Run a Full scan.
  5. If the issue continues and malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same area.

Check the disk

If the game folder contains files that become corrupted repeatedly:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Run:
chkdsk C: /scan
  1. Replace C: with the drive containing the game if necessary.
  2. Review the result.

Do not schedule a repair scan automatically unless you understand which drive will be checked and when Windows will restart.

Test a new Windows account

If the game works for another Windows account, the original user profile may have incorrect permissions or damaged configuration data.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Accounts.
  3. Select Other users.
  4. Choose Add account.
  5. Create a temporary local account.
  6. Sign in to it.
  7. Install or launch the game according to the publisher’s instructions.
  8. Test whether the same error occurs.

A new account is a diagnostic test, not necessarily a permanent solution.

Safe sources for the file

Use these sources, in this order:

  1. The affected game’s official launcher repair or verification feature.
  2. The game’s original installer or official installation media.
  3. The game’s bundled _CommonRedist or Redist package.
  4. NVIDIA’s official PhysX System Software package.
  5. Microsoft Visual C++ or DirectX packages only when the error identifies those dependencies.

Do not use random DLL download websites. The risks include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Malware or unwanted software.
  • A mismatched PhysX version.
  • The wrong x86 or x64 architecture.
  • A modified or corrupted binary.
  • Missing companion DLLs.
  • A false sense that the underlying installation is repaired.

The safest copy is the one delivered by the application that needs it.

Final diagnostic checklist

If the normal fixes fail, collect this information before asking the game publisher or technical support for help:

  • The exact game or application name.
  • The exact executable name.
  • The full executable path.
  • The complete error text and any error code.
  • Whether physx3cooking_x86.dll exists and where.
  • Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • The Windows version and architecture.
  • Whether the problem began after an update, reinstall, mod installation, cleanup, or antivirus alert.
  • The names of any other missing DLLs.
  • Whether Steam or another launcher completed file verification.
  • Whether NVIDIA PhysX System Software is installed.
  • Whether the game contains a _CommonRedist or Redist folder.

If the official installer still omits the required file after a clean reinstall, the issue is specific to that application’s package or deployment. Escalate it to the publisher with the path, executable name, exact error, and launcher verification result.

FAQ

Is physx3cooking_x86.dll safe?

The legitimate file is a real NVIDIA PhysX runtime component. Safety depends on where the copy came from. A file restored by the original game installer or official NVIDIA package is more trustworthy than one downloaded from an unknown DLL site.

Is it a Windows system file?

No. It is a third-party PhysX library normally supplied with a game or application. Do not place it in System32 or SysWOW64.

Do I need NVIDIA graphics hardware?

Not necessarily. A game can use NVIDIA’s PhysX software runtime even when the computer does not use an NVIDIA graphics card. The application still needs the correct PhysX files.

Does DirectX install this file?

No. Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime supplies certain legacy DirectX libraries. It does not install physx3cooking_x86.dll.

Does Visual C++ install this file?

No. Visual C++ may provide a dependency required by the PhysX DLL, but it does not provide the PhysX library itself.

Should I register it with regsvr32?

No. It is a runtime dependency, not an identified registerable COM component. Repair the game or install the required runtime instead.

Can I use an x64 version?

No. The x86 file is 32-bit. Restore the x86 file and the matching companion DLLs supplied with the application.

Why does the error appear after installing a mod?

A mod installer may replace, remove, or conflict with game files. Disable the mod, verify the clean game installation, launch the game successfully, and reinstall the mod only if it is compatible with that game build.

What is the single most likely fix?

Verify, repair, or reinstall the affected game. That restores the exact application-local PhysX files instead of introducing an unrelated DLL into Windows.
