It is not a handheld that plays original 2600 cartridges. For existing cartridges, look instead at Atari’s home-console 2600+; for a handheld with a cartridge-based library, consider Evercade EXP.
What the “Atari 2600 handheld” actually is
The Atari Gamestation Go is an Atari-focused portable console, not a portable version of the 2600 cartridge hardware. Atari lists more than 200 built-in games spanning Atari systems and arcade titles, including an Atari 2600 category, as well as licensed PAC-MAN, Jaleco and PIKO games. Its games come preloaded; the cited Atari information does not say it accepts original Atari cartridges. Atari’s Gamestation Go product page has the current game list and feature details.
This distinction matters most if you already own cartridges. The Gamestation Go is for playing its built-in catalog; Atari’s 2600+ is the relevant option for playing most original 2600 and 7800 cartridges on a TV.
How the three options compare
| Option | What you play | Form factor and controls | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atari Gamestation Go | More than 200 built-in games, including Atari 2600 titles; Atari also lists arcade and licensed games. | Portable handheld with integrated paddle, trackball, d-pad, numeric keypad, bumpers and A/B/X/Y buttons. SmartGlow illuminates controls used by the selected game. | Someone who wants an Atari-oriented collection ready to play without sourcing cartridges. |
| Atari 2600+ | Most Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges; a 10-in-1 cartridge is included. | Home console with HDMI output and a joystick, not a handheld. | Someone who owns compatible Atari cartridges and wants to play on a modern TV. |
| Evercade EXP | Evercade cartridges. The cited comparison does not establish Atari 2600 compatibility. | Handheld with a 16:9 display. | Someone who prefers a cartridge-based retro handheld library and will check the specific games available on Evercade cartridges. |
Specifications and compatibility in the table come from Atari’s Gamestation Go listing, Atari’s 2600+ product page, Atari’s 2600+ FAQ and TechRadar’s retro-console guide. The Evercade source supports cartridge compatibility as a platform feature, but not Atari 2600 game compatibility.

Why the Gamestation Go’s controls are different
Many handhelds rely on a familiar d-pad and buttons. The Gamestation Go adds an integrated paddle and trackball, alongside a numeric keypad and standard controls. Atari’s SmartGlow feature illuminates the controls a selected game uses, which can make it easier to identify the intended input without guessing.
Notebookcheck’s review found the paddle and trackball useful for games designed around those inputs. The reviewer also observed that some portrait-oriented arcade games can appear small on the handheld’s landscape display. Those are review observations, not guarantees for every game or player. See Notebookcheck’s Gamestation Go review for its experience with the device.

Portability, TV play and battery life
Atari lists a 7-inch display, HDMI output, USB-C ports for external controllers, Wi-Fi, game saves and a pop-out stand. That lets the Gamestation Go serve as a handheld or connect to a TV; Atari also offers a separate Gamestation Gamepad for TV play. The 7-inch display and other listed features are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.
Battery figures depend on the source and conditions. Atari estimates 4–5 hours of play time. Notebookcheck lists about four hours in its specifications and reports up to seven hours during its testing. Treat the latter as that reviewer’s result rather than a guaranteed runtime; brightness, game and use can affect what a player gets.

When the Atari 2600+ is the better choice
Choose the 2600+ if your priority is playing cartridges you already own on a modern TV. Atari says it supports most Atari 2600 and 7800 cartridges and outputs over HDMI. “Most” is important: the manufacturer does not promise universal compatibility. The console includes a joystick and a 10-in-1 cartridge. Atari’s FAQ says the 2600+ uses emulation technology for cartridge playback, so it should not be mistaken for a wholly original 1970s console architecture. Atari also describes it as 80% of the original size. More details are on the 2600+ product page and in the 2600+ FAQ.
