Atari announced on May 23, 2024, that it had acquired the Intellivision brand, its trademarks and rights to more than 200 games. It did not buy the Amico company or console: Amico Entertainment retained the Amico hardware intellectual property and said it could develop licensed, reimagined Intellivision games for its platform.

What Atari acquired

Atari’s announcement describes a purchase of the Intellivision brand and certain games from Intellivision Entertainment LLC. The deal includes Intellivision trademarks and rights to more than 200 titles in the portfolio. Atari did not disclose the purchase price in its announcement.

The distinction matters: the transaction transferred brand and game rights, not the seller’s entire business or its Amico platform.

What happened to Intellivision Entertainment and Amico?

Intellivision Entertainment LLC said it would rebrand and continue developing and distributing Amico products. In a July 9, 2024 update, the company identified itself as Amico Entertainment and said it retained the Amico hardware intellectual property and patents, including those for the controllers, console and Amico Home. It also said it retained the right, under license from Atari, to make reimagined Amico versions of classic Intellivision games. Read the company’s update.

That arrangement does not establish that a physical Amico console has shipped. Atari’s acquisition announcement described the console as still under development at the time. Amico Entertainment expressed interest in bringing Atari and Intellivision titles to Amico and Amico Home, but that statement is an intention, not confirmation of a released product.

Why the brands were rivals

Mattel Electronics launched the first Intellivision home console in 1979 to compete with the Atari 2600. Atari’s acquisition announcement says the Intellivision platform sold an estimated five million units through 1990; that is Atari’s estimate, not an independently audited figure.

The companies’ rivalry became part of early video-game marketing. Atari’s account recalls comparative advertising featuring actor and sports journalist George Plimpton. Mattel also entered the Atari 2600 software market: its M Network label launched in 1982 with games for the rival console, including ports of Intellivision titles. Mattel closed its software division in 1984, after the 1983 video-game market crash. Atari’s brand history provides its account of that period.

Digital Eclipse studio head Mike Mika called the deal an end to “the longest-running console war in history.” That is a colorful description of the rivalry, not a formal historical classification. Atari CEO Wade Rosen described the acquisition as “a very rare opportunity to unite former competitors.” Both remarks appeared in connection with the companies’ announcement.

What Atari said it plans to do

Atari said it would look for ways to expand digital and physical distribution of Intellivision games, potentially develop new games, and explore licensing and other brand opportunities. It also mentioned apparel and collectibles. These are stated plans, not a guarantee that each product or project will be released.

Ways to play Intellivision games now

Atari currently lists the Intellivision Sprint, a modern Atari product with 45 built-in games, HDMI connectivity, two wireless rechargeable disc controllers and game overlays. It is a distinct product from both the original Mattel console and the Amico project. Its built-in selection should not be assumed to match the full historical library or any future Amico releases.
