If Windows reports that atiumd64.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the problem usually belongs to the AMD Radeon graphics-driver installation. Do not start by downloading a replacement DLL, because the correct repair is normally to restore the complete driver package.

Common messages include:

The program can't start because atiumd64.dll is missing from your computer.
atiumd64.dll was not found
atiumd64.dll could not be located
atiumd64.dll file could not be loaded

You may also see:

The code execution cannot proceed because atiumd64.dll was not found.

Or the more general loader message:

atiumd64.dll is either not designed to run on Windows
or it contains an error.

The 60-second answer

atiumd64.dll is a genuine AMD/ATI Radeon user-mode graphics-driver component used with DirectX rendering. It is not a normal Windows runtime, Visual C++ file, .NET component, or standalone application dependency.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The safest repair is:

  1. Open Device Manager > Display adapters and identify the exact Radeon GPU.
  2. Download the matching driver from AMD’s official Drivers and Support page, or from the computer manufacturer for a laptop or prebuilt PC.
  3. If the installation is damaged, remove it with AMD Cleanup Utility, preferably in Safe Mode.
  4. Reinstall the complete driver package and restart Windows.
  5. Verify the game or application if only one program reports the error.

What atiumd64.dll is

The filename belongs to the AMD/ATI Radeon display-driver family. The 64 suffix indicates a 64-bit variant. Related Radeon packages can contain files such as atiumd6a.dll, atidxx64.dll, and aticfx64.dll, but the exact collection depends on the GPU generation and driver package.

The file may appear under a path like:

C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository...atiumd64.dll

Older driver packages may also place it directly in:

  • Server-grade Thermal Conductive Gel

C:WindowsSystem32

That location does not make it a Microsoft Windows component. Third-party display drivers can legitimately install files under System32, while Windows stores and manages their packages through the Driver Store.

A historical 64-bit listing identifies one variant as version 9.14.10.1128 with a size of 8.54 MB. Do not use those details as a download target. Driver versions and file contents vary by Radeon generation, Windows release, and package.

Why the error appears

The likely causes, in practical repair order, are:

  • A failed, interrupted, or incomplete AMD driver installation
  • A rollback that left mismatched driver files behind
  • The wrong driver for the GPU, Windows version, or laptop platform
  • Windows Update replacing or partially staging a display driver
  • Antivirus software quarantining the file
  • Damaged game files
  • Corruption in Windows components or protected system files
  • A driver regression or incompatibility with an older game
  • Hardware instability, overheating, overclocking, or memory problems

A crash report naming atiumd64.dll does not prove that the file is missing or defective. It identifies the module where Windows recorded the failure. The underlying problem may be the application, an overlay, another driver component, or unstable hardware.

Fix 1: Identify the GPU and install the correct driver

This is the most important step. Do not choose a driver by searching only for the DLL filename.

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Write down the exact Radeon model.
  5. Right-click the Radeon device and select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab and note the provider, date, and version.
  7. Close Device Manager and obtain the matching package from AMD’s official Drivers and Support page.

For a laptop or prebuilt computer, check the manufacturer’s support page before using a generic AMD package. Laptop graphics switching, power management, display output, and integrated Radeon components may require an OEM-specific package.

If AMD’s selector cannot identify the device, use AMD Auto-Detect or the computer manufacturer’s driver-detection page. For older Radeon hardware, use the package listed for that specific product rather than assuming the newest package supports it.

During installation, choose the Recommended package when both Recommended and Optional drivers are offered. Recommended drivers are the safer first choice when the goal is stability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restart Windows after the installation. Then launch the application again. If the missing-file message has disappeared and the game renders normally, the driver package was the issue.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through hardware models and comparing stale driver versions. Its free scan shows what it finds, while the repair or driver installation requires the full version; it is optional, and the official AMD or OEM package remains the direct repair path.

Fix 2: Perform a clean AMD driver installation

Use this when the normal installer fails, the error returned after an update, or Device Manager shows warning symbols or repeated driver crashes.

AMD Cleanup Utility removes previously installed AMD graphics and audio drivers. AMD recommends using it in Safe Mode, and the utility creates a restore point before cleanup.

  1. Save open work and close games, browsers, and Radeon software.
  2. Obtain AMD Cleanup Utility from AMD’s official support materials.
  3. Run the utility.
  4. Allow it to restart Windows into Safe Mode if prompted.
  5. Confirm that you want to remove the AMD graphics and audio drivers.
  6. Wait for cleanup to finish.
  7. Restart when the utility requests it.
  8. Install the correct AMD or OEM driver package.
  9. Restart Windows again.

Do not interrupt the cleanup or install process. Afterward, return to Device Manager > Display adapters. The Radeon device should appear without a yellow warning icon, and the Driver tab should show the newly installed package.

If the clean installation succeeds but Windows immediately replaces it with another driver, install pending Windows updates, restart, and then test the OEM driver. A laptop manufacturer’s package may be more compatible than a generic AMD release.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus software removed the file

A sudden failure after the game or driver previously worked can indicate quarantine or security-software interference.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections involving atiumd64.dll or an AMD driver package.
  5. Open the detection and inspect the file path, source, publisher, and signature information.
  6. Restore or allow the file only if it came from the official AMD or computer-manufacturer package and has been verified as legitimate.

If the file was quarantined from an unofficial DLL download, do not restore it. Remove that file and reinstall the complete trusted driver package instead. Allowing a malicious file can put the computer at risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If security software repeatedly removes a legitimate driver file, update the security definitions, temporarily follow the vendor’s documented driver-installation procedure, and reinstall the driver. Do not permanently disable protection just to keep an unknown DLL.

Fix 4: Repair the game or application files

If only one game fails while other DirectX applications work, the game installation may be damaged or may contain an old compatibility problem.

For a Steam game:

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Right-click the game and choose Properties.
  4. Select Installed Files.
  5. Choose Verify integrity of game files.
  6. Wait for the process to finish.
  7. Restart Steam and launch the game.

Other launchers usually provide Repair, Scan, or Verify beside the installed game. Use that option rather than copying atiumd64.dll into the game folder.

If verification reports repaired files but the game still crashes, update the Radeon driver, disable overlays, and test without optional launch parameters or modifications. Older games may expect a legacy AMD driver component that is incompatible with a newer package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

These commands repair Windows component-store and protected-file corruption. They are useful when the driver installer itself fails or Windows has broader file errors, but they do not replace a missing AMD driver package.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows after both commands finish.
  2. Reinstall the AMD driver if atiumd64.dll is still missing.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. A successful DISM operation means the component repair completed. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired damaged files, or found files it could not repair. If SFC cannot repair everything, run the commands again after Windows Update, then focus on the AMD driver installation rather than repeatedly replacing DLLs.

Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of repeating SFC and DISM easier by showing what it detects before repair. Its free scan identifies issues, while repair requires the full version, and it is not required when the AMD driver package itself is the problem.

Fix 6: Install updates or roll back a bad driver

If the error began immediately after an update, the new driver may be incompatible with the game or GPU.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First install pending Windows updates:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart the computer.

To check whether Windows still has the previous driver:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Right-click the Radeon device and select Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab.
  5. Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
  6. Choose a reason and confirm.
  7. Restart Windows.

The rollback button is available only when Windows has retained a previous driver. If it is unavailable, perform a clean installation of the OEM package or a known compatible AMD package instead.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file

You may find advice telling you to run:

regsvr32 atiumd64.dll

That is not a routine repair for a Radeon driver DLL. regsvr32 is intended for registrable COM or ActiveX components that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A graphics-driver runtime module is not normally repaired by registration.

Running the command may produce an error saying that the module loaded but the entry point was not found. That does not mean the file needs a different copy. Reinstall the driver package instead.

A standalone copy does not repair the driver package, services, registry entries, or related display files. Use the official AMD driver package or the computer manufacturer’s support package.

32-bit and 64-bit considerations

atiumd64.dll is the 64-bit variant. On 64-bit Windows, a 64-bit game can use the 64-bit driver components, while a 32-bit game may require related 32-bit components supplied by the same driver package.

Do not attempt to satisfy a 32-bit application by manually copying the 64-bit file. Install the complete driver package so Windows receives the correct components for both application types. On 32-bit Windows, a 64-bit DLL cannot be loaded at all, although modern systems using current Radeon hardware are generally 64-bit.

If the crash continues after reinstalling

If every driver version crashes with atiumd64.dll, treat it as a broader stability problem rather than a missing-file problem.

  1. Disable Radeon overlays and third-party monitoring overlays.
  2. Turn off application hardware acceleration temporarily.
  3. Return GPU, CPU, and RAM settings to stock values.
  4. Check temperatures while the application is running.
  5. Test another DirectX game or graphics application.
  6. Run Windows memory and disk checks.
  7. Review Event Viewer for recurring display-driver or hardware errors.
  8. Use another display or cable if the failure involves display resets.

If the problem began after a major system change, press Windows key + R, enter:

rstrui.exe

Then choose a restore point from before the driver or system change. System Restore can reverse driver and system changes without removing personal files, although affected applications and drivers may be reverted.

FAQ

Is atiumd64.dll a Windows file?

No. It is an AMD/ATI Radeon display-driver component. Windows can load it from a legitimate driver location under System32 or the Driver Store, but Microsoft does not provide it as a standalone Windows runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install Visual C++ or .NET?

Usually not for this error. A game may separately require Visual C++ or DirectX components, but those packages do not replace an AMD graphics-driver DLL. Repair the Radeon driver first.

Should I reinstall DirectX?

Only if the application has a separate DirectX error. Reinstalling DirectX does not normally restore atiumd64.dll.

Why does Event Viewer name atiumd64.dll when the file exists?

The module may be where the crash was recorded, not the underlying cause. Investigate the full driver version, game version, overlays, recent updates, temperatures, and hardware settings.

Can I delete older copies from DriverStore?

No. Windows may retain older driver packages for rollback. Delete or replace drivers through Device Manager, AMD Cleanup Utility, or the official installer, not by removing individual DLLs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a missing file always mean malware?

No. Corrupt installations, quarantine, failed updates, and incompatible drivers are more direct explanations. Verify the file’s source and signature, then reinstall the complete trusted package.
