Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows, record:
- Which program reports the error: Does it happen with one application, at startup, Performance Monitor, or several programs?
- When it appears: Note whether the failure occurs during boot, when opening an app, or when software queries system performance data.
- The complete message: “Specified module could not be found” can identify a missing dependency rather than
wmiperfclass.dllitself. - Your Windows architecture: Open Settings > System > About and check System type. Older systems may be 32-bit, while many current installations are 64-bit.
- Whether the file exists: Check
C:WindowsSystem32wbemWmiPerfClass.dll. Do not download a replacement if it is absent.

wmiperfclass.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component. Its embedded description is “WbemPerf V2 Class Provider,” and the safest first repair is to restore Windows’ component files with DISM and SFC rather than copying a DLL from the internet.
What wmiperfclass.dll does
The file belongs to Windows Management Instrumentation, or WMI. The WMIPerfClass provider creates WMI performance-counter classes during system initialization and supports version 1 and version 2 performance counters. Applications and Windows tools can use those classes when they query performance information.

Microsoft’s current WMI provider documentation lists the provider under rootCIMV2 and shows this normal path:
C:WindowsSystem32wbemWmiPerfClass.dll
The capitalization shown by Windows may differ from the filename in the error. The component is part of Windows, not Office, Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or a normal game runtime.

- 3. READY-TO-USE BOOTABLE USB Reusable installation and recovery media that helps eliminate the need to download large system files or create bootable media yourself. Insert the USB drive, open the computer’s boot menu and select the appropriate installation or recovery option.
- 4. HELP KEEP OLDER PCS USEFUL Refresh, reinstall or maintain a compatible older computer before deciding whether replacement is necessary. Suitable for home computers, office workstations, PC enthusiasts and technicians who regularly work with supported systems.
- 5. IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY & LICENSE INFORMATION Supports compatible 64-bit computers with UEFI or Legacy BIOS USB booting. No Windows license, activation key or product key is included. Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native 64-bit system directory. Windows also maintains components for 32-bit processes, commonly under SysWOW64. A 32-bit application may interact with the 32-bit WMI infrastructure, but you should not guess which DLL belongs in which directory. Windows servicing must provide the correct build and architecture.
Fix 1: Install pending Windows updates
A damaged or missing protected Windows file is the most likely explanation when multiple programs or Windows tools report the problem.
- Save your work and close running applications.
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available quality, security, and cumulative updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Test the program, Performance Monitor, or the WMI-dependent operation again.
If Windows Update repeatedly fails, continue with DISM and SFC. A broken update process can itself be part of the component-store problem.

Fix 2: Run DISM, then SFC
Microsoft recommends repairing the Windows component store with DISM before running System File Checker. DISM can use Windows Update as a repair source, while SFC checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original program again.
If SFC reports that it repaired corrupt files, restart and retest. If it says Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, the problem may involve WMI registration, a dependency, security software, or one application rather than a missing system file.
If DISM cannot find source files, install pending updates first. When Windows Update is unavailable, Microsoft supports supplying a matching repair source with /Source and /LimitAccess; use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and architecture rather than an arbitrary image.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through system issues and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed; its free scan shows what it identifies, while repairs are completed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows’ built-in repair commands remain the appropriate first step.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix 3: Check whether Microsoft Defender quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine a file after detecting suspicious activity. Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error. A malicious file can use a legitimate Windows filename.
- Open Start > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections and expand any event involving the WMI provider or a file in the
wbemdirectory. - If Defender identifies malware, leave the file quarantined and choose the scan option instead of restoring it.
- Run Scan options > Full scan.
- If you are confident a legitimate Microsoft file was incorrectly quarantined, verify its location and signature before considering restoration.
Protection History retains events for two weeks, so an older removal may no longer appear there. Microsoft warns that allowing an unsafe file can put the system at risk.
After the scan, run DISM and SFC again. Windows should restore a missing protected component from a valid repair source.
Fix 4: Verify the file location and signature
If WmiPerfClass.dll exists, its location and digital signature matter more than its filename.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to:
C:WindowsSystem32wbem
- Look for
WmiPerfClass.dll. - Right-click it, select Properties, and open the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Review the signer and signature status.
A file in a program folder, Downloads, a temporary directory, or beside a game executable is not the normal current WMI-provider location. A manually replaced file may have the wrong Windows build, language, architecture, or dependencies. It can trigger “not designed to run on Windows,” entry-point errors, or a load failure even when the filename is correct.
If an unofficial replacement was copied into Windows, do not copy it elsewhere or attempt to register it. Run DISM followed by SFC so Windows can restore a build-matched component.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 for this provider
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 wmiperfclass.dll
WMIPerfClass is a WMI provider hosted by WMI Provider Host. Microsoft does not instruct users to repair this component by registering it as an ActiveX or application DLL. An error from regsvr32 does not prove that the file is broken, and forcibly registering a system provider can make diagnosis less clear.

Fix 6: Test WMI and Performance Monitor
The error may reflect damaged WMI or performance-counter registration instead of a missing file.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
perfmonand press Enter. - Check whether Performance Monitor opens normally.
- In the same way, open
services.msc. - Find Windows Management Instrumentation.
- Confirm its status is Running and its startup type is appropriate for Windows.
- Restart the service only if it is stopped or clearly stuck, then test again.
If WMI errors persist, record the full event from Event Viewer:
- Right-click Start and select Event Viewer.
- Review Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > WMI-Activity.
- Also review Windows Logs > System around the time of the failure.
- Note the application, provider, namespace, and error details.
A WMI provider is hosted by WmiPrvSE.exe. If only one application generates WMI errors, the application may be issuing an invalid query or expecting a component that it installed separately. If many Windows tools fail, continue to the Windows repair options below.
Fix 7: Repair the affected application only when it is isolated
Reinstalling an application is justified when:
- only one program reports the error;
- DISM and SFC complete successfully;
- Windows tools such as Performance Monitor work;
- the application’s own installer or launcher reports damaged files.
First check the program’s built-in repair option:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and test the program.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only after reviewing what data the application may remove.
For traditional desktop programs, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the application, and choose Change or Repair if the installer provides it.

If repair fails, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer or launcher. This is the definitive fix when the program owns a private dependency. However, wmiperfclass.dll is documented as a Windows WMI provider, so do not assume that a particular game or Office installation owns it merely because that application displays the error.
Fix 8: Update related drivers only if diagnostics point there
A graphics, storage, chipset, or monitoring driver can cause WMI queries to fail, but a driver update is not the normal fix for a missing Windows provider.
Use Device Manager only when the event identifies a device or the problem began immediately after a driver change:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category named in the error or event.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Select Update Driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If the problem began after an update, use Roll Back Driver when available. Otherwise obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer or your PC manufacturer, matching Windows architecture and model.
Outbyte Driver Updater can help identify stale drivers when manually checking dozens of devices is impractical; its free scan shows the detected issues, while driver installation is completed by the full version. Do not use it as a substitute for DISM and SFC when the evidence points to Windows component corruption.
Fix 9: Use Windows repair recovery
If repairs fail and the problem affects Windows broadly, escalate without copying individual DLLs.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Windows 11 repair reinstall
On eligible Windows 11 systems:
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
Microsoft says this reinstalls the same Windows version and repairs system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings. The option may be unavailable on some systems.
In-place repair with installation media
If the Windows Update repair option is unavailable:
- Obtain matching Windows installation media from Microsoft.
- Start Windows normally.
- Open the media and run
setup.exe. - Follow the installer prompts.
- Select Keep personal files and apps when offered.
- Complete the installation and test WMI afterward.
Do not boot from the media if your intention is an in-place repair that preserves applications. Confirm the edition and architecture before proceeding, and back up important files first.
System Restore or reset
Use System Restore when the problem began after a known driver, update, or system change and a suitable restore point exists. It rolls back system files and settings but does not normally remove personal files.
If corruption returns, storage hardware may be failing. Back up important data, check disk health, and consider Windows recovery options. A reset or clean installation is a last resort after confirming that essential files and application installers are available.
Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2
Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 have a documented Wmiperfclass race condition that could cause WMI and performance monitors to stop responding. Microsoft’s historical fix was an operating-system hotfix with separate x86 and x64 builds, not copying a DLL from another computer.
Do not apply old file versions to current Windows or treat historical version numbers as universal. On those legacy systems, identify the exact edition, architecture, service-pack state, and installed updates before applying a Microsoft-supported fix.
Why random DLL downloads are the wrong fix
Avoid DLL download sites and do not copy a downloaded file into System32, SysWOW64, an application directory, or the wbem folder. A file can have the right name but still be malicious, unsigned, intended for another architecture, or built for a different Windows release.
A downloaded DLL also leaves the component store and WMI configuration unrepaired. DISM and SFC are safer because they restore Windows-managed files from a servicing source. If Windows cannot repair itself, use Microsoft installation media or supported recovery tools.
FAQ
Is wmiperfclass.dll part of Windows?
Yes. It is a Microsoft WMI performance-counter provider. It is not a normal Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, Office, or game redistributable.
Why does the error mention a game or application?
That program may be querying WMI, or it may be displaying a generic loader error. The complete message may name a different missing dependency. Repair Windows first, then repair the application if it is the only program affected.
What if the file exists but the error continues?
Check its location and Microsoft signature, then run DISM and SFC. If those pass, review WMI-Activity and System events, test Performance Monitor, and investigate the application making the WMI query.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does 32-bit versus 64-bit matter?
Yes. Windows maintains different components for native and 32-bit processes. Use the copy supplied by Windows servicing rather than selecting a DLL based on its filename or copying between architectures.
Should I install Visual C++ or run regsvr32?
No, not solely for this filename. wmiperfclass.dll is a WMI provider, and routine regsvr32 registration is not an appropriate repair.
What is the correct first command?
Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the original failure again.
