The quickest useful early pickups in Atomfall are a Leamington 12 Gauge shotgun and a grenade near the starting area, plus a rusty Mark VI revolver in bunker L7. For a quieter approach, seek a bow in western Casterfell Woods; for a stock semi-automatic pistol, search the Secret Tunnel beneath Grendel’s Head pub. “Best” depends on the fight: weigh range, ammunition, condition, stealth and the danger of reaching each weapon.
Best early guns at a glance
| Weapon | Where to find it | What it suits | Route consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leamington 12 Gauge Shotgun | On a body inside a dilapidated building after leaving the bunker; shotgun ammunition is on a nearby table. [Based Otaku] | Close-range encounters. | A reachable early pickup on the starting-area route. |
| Rusty Mark VI Revolver | On a scientist’s body in bunker L7. [PC Gamer] | A starter sidearm; the broader weapon guide describes the pristine MK.VI as high-damage with a six-round capacity, but that is not a claim about this rusty pickup. [PCGamesN] | Reachable in the bunker; a second Training Stimulant is reportedly in a crate near the feral enemy. |
| M.1911 (stock) | In the Secret Tunnel, reached through the cellar of Grendel’s Head pub in Wyndham Village. [PC Gamer] | A semi-automatic sidearm; the location guide describes it as stock condition. | Requires exploring the village pub cellar and tunnel. |
| Terrier .22 Rifle | Listed on the broader route after leaving the bunker. Consult the guide’s map for its image-based marker. [Based Otaku] | A rifle option for engaging at greater distance than a shotgun. | The source does not provide a text-readable precise marker. |
| Bow | Carried by druids patrolling western Casterfell Woods. [PC Gamer] | Quiet attacks with reusable arrows, useful when conserving ammunition and avoiding noise. | The area has numerous druids, so getting one may involve a dangerous approach. |
Follow a practical early route
1. Search the starting area for the shotgun and grenade
After leaving the bunker, look in the dilapidated building for a body carrying the Leamington 12 Gauge; the route guide says shotgun ammunition is on a table nearby. At a nearby waterfall, a hidden cave contains a campsite and grenade. These are among the more immediately useful finds if you want a close-range weapon and an explosive without first traveling into a heavily populated region. The directions are from Based Otaku’s March 25, 2025 guide; its map marker is image-based, so use the guide’s map rather than treating these descriptions as exact coordinates. [Based Otaku]

2. Pick up the revolver in bunker L7
PC Gamer’s March 26, 2025 starter route places a rusty Mark VI Revolver on a scientist’s body in bunker L7. A crate near the feral enemy in that area is reported to hold a second Training Stimulant. This is a straightforward sidearm option if you are still close to the bunker, though the source does not establish its ammunition supply or condition beyond calling it rusty. [PC Gamer]
3. Choose whether the metal detector is worth the detour
A metal detector lies on a corpse on the small island in the pond directly north of the Slate Mine Caves. The item is free, but the guide warns that leeches may be in the pond and an outlaw base is nearby. Take this detour when the detector itself is useful to your plans, not simply because an item is available. Reg Stansfield in the Slate Mine Caves, east up the valley from the bunker, is one reported way to barter for a torch; another is James Clarke’s corpse at the Wyndham Village entrance to the Interchange. 4. Search Wyndham Village for the stock M.1911
Enter the cellar of Grendel’s Head pub and follow the Secret Tunnel to find an M.1911. PC Gamer identifies it as a semi-automatic sidearm in stock condition. The detour is worthwhile if you want a pistol alternative to the rusty revolver, but the guide’s description does not establish that the M.1911 is superior in every encounter. [PC Gamer]
5. Decide whether to pursue the bow or rifle
For quiet combat, druids patrolling western Casterfell Woods carry bows. PC Gamer notes that bow attacks are noise-free and arrows can be reused, but also cautions that druids are numerous there. The Terrier .22 Rifle appears on Based Otaku’s wider early route; because that guide’s precise marker is in an image, verify the location on its map rather than relying on an invented coordinate. Choose a gun for the fight, not a universal ranking
- Close range: Favor the Leamington shotgun when you expect enemies to get close. PCGamesN describes the Broadside Auto 5 as powerful at short range, but its pristine version is a broader progression option—not a guaranteed early pickup. [Based Otaku] [PCGamesN]
- Distance: The Terrier .22 is the listed early rifle find. PCGamesN’s remarks about the Falkirk Battle Rifle’s precision at mid and long range refer to a pristine weapon in its broader ranking, not this early-route pickup. [Based Otaku] [PCGamesN]
- Stealth and ammunition conservation: The bow’s silent attacks and reusable arrows make it the standout choice when avoiding noise matters more than convenience; reaching it means dealing with druids. [PC Gamer]
- Sidearm choice: The rusty Mark VI and stock M.1911 are separate starter options. PCGamesN’s six-round capacity and high-damage description applies to the pristine MK.VI, so do not assume it precisely describes the rusty version found in L7. [PC Gamer] [PCGamesN]
- Condition and route risk: PCGamesN’s ranking emphasizes the advantage of pristine guns over low-quality counterparts. A stronger weapon may not be worth the ammunition or health spent reaching it if the route runs through outlaws, leeches or druids. [PCGamesN]
Useful nearby finds and recipes
PC Gamer also identifies two hidden caches in Slatten Dale using its map convention: at 27.3E, 75.6N, ruined cottages near the waterwheels contain alcohol, pistol ammunition and a makeshift grenade recipe; at 26.5E, 77.6N, a cache south of the Trader Camp contains chemicals, a poison bomb and a nail-bomb recipe. Check those coordinates against the current in-game map, since the directions and coordinate convention come from the guide. [PC Gamer]
Based Otaku’s broader route also lists a Police Truncheon, metal detector, MK.VI Revolver and Sticky Bomb Recipe, BARD crate and melee skill book, Molotov, and bow alongside its other finds. It estimates that the collection takes less than 30 minutes; that is the guide author’s route estimate, not an independently measured completion time. [Based Otaku]

The location advice comes from secondary guides published March 25–26, 2025, rather than official Rebellion documentation. The sources do not establish whether later patches changed item placements or weapon balance. Treat named locations as guide-reported leads, check map markers in your current game, and avoid assuming that a route estimate or weapon ranking applies unchanged to every run.
